The swan family at Springfield are growing up! If you have been counting, there are four chicks here, the fifth one is well but in a rehab centre with a damaged foot.

Built in 1927-1931, this Art Deco-style building was designed by Law, Law and Potter to serve as the home of the Central Illinois Public Service Company, which was a local energy utility in the Springfield area, though the building is more commonly known as the Illinois Building. The 15-story building was then the largest commercial office building in Illinois outside of Chicago, and stands 201 feet (61 meters) tall. The building features a limestone-clad exterior with decorative green spandrel panels between most windows on the upper floors, decorative carved sculptural reliefs, a setback upper section of the tower, multiple first floor retail shopfronts, and a main entrance on Adams Street with a decorative Art Deco transom, pendant-style light fixtures, and green marble serpentinite cladding above the doorway. The building is a contributing structure in the Central Springfield Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, and expanded to its present size in 2016. The building today houses multiple office and retail tenants.

The Springfield Armory was established in 1777, at the request of George Washington and Henry Knox, to build weapons for the United States military. Another armory was established in Harper's Ferry Virginia. Harper's Ferry Armory was destroyed in the Civil War and was never rebuilt. The Springfield Armory was the major source of American weapons until it was closed in 1968.
This is the square at the center of the armory. The buildings were originally part of the armory. They are now part of Springfield Technical Community College.

Friends, no one who has never been placed in a like position
can understand my feelings at this hour, nor the
oppressive sadness I feel at this parting.
For more than a quarter of a century I have lived among
you, and during all that time I have received nothing but
kindness at your hands, here I have lived from my youth
until now I'm an old man. Here the most sacred ties of
earth were assumed, here all my children were born; and
here one of them lies buried.
To you, dear friends, I owe all that I have, all that I am.
All the strange, checkered past seems to crowd now upon
my mind. Today I leave you; I go to assume a task more
difficult than that which devolved upon
General Washington.
Unless the great God, who assisted him, shall be with and
kid me, I must fail. But if the omniscient mind and the same
almighty arm that directed and protected him, shall guide
and support me, I shall not fail -- I shall succeed. Let us all
pray that the God of our fathers may not forsake us now
to him I commend you all. Permit me to ask that with
equal sincerity and faith, you all will invoke his wisdom
and guidance for me.
With these few words I must leave you.
For how long I know not.
Friends, one and all, I must now bid you an
affectionate farewell.
Farewell address at Springfield, Illinois, February 11, 1861.
