Spring training for Major League Baseball clubs began this week. In this early March 1942 scene on the Illinois Wesleyan University campus (that’s still-standing Memorial Hall) senior catcher Hugh Dickie (with bat) plays a little “pepper” with teammates (left to right) Berthyl Brigham, Walter Wadington, Jim Fletcher, and Ralph Zeitz.

If you attend Mariner's games in Seattle this should be a familiar face. Rick-the-peanut-guy comes to Spring training to get his tossing arm in shape.

These will be dribbling in over the next few weeks. In fact, I realized I never finished processing the ones from last year!

This was an Elderhostel Program where we saw several Mariner games, met some of the players, some people got plenty of autographs, souveniers, etc. The spring training was in Phoenix. One afternoon we went to the stadium of the Arizona Diamondbacks and were given a tour of the entire facility. Very, very interesting. Afterward the president of the organization gave us a presentation with a question and answer session afterward. Wonderful afternoon.

The White Sox outfielder in the background had thrown a ball up to the kids in our section. You can see a few of the older kids trying to catch the ball, as the security guard (in the straw hat) was giving the younger fans a lecture about not standing on the fence.
