Nutrient poor soil has forced these carnivorous plants to evolve to find another way to obtain nutrients. the sandy soil does not allow good nutrient retention for smaller plants leading to the wide variety of indigenous carnivorous plants in the Wilmington area, such as pitcher plants and Venus fly traps. evolution is one of the main driving ecological processes and the nutrient poor soil is one limiting factor to force evolution.
