In the picture are developing carnivorous pitcher plants found on UNCW’s Boothenal Trail. The plant is filled with a nectar that attracts flying insects and the drown in it. These tie into the concept of decomposition because Pitcher Plants also contain larvae that feed on the waste (I dissolved part of the insect) and some of the digest takes place by bacteria that may have fallen in and have been able to survive within the plant. The parts that are dissolved are converted into nitrogen, phosphorus, amino acids, ammonium, urea, and peptides. They bring these limiting nutrients into their environment by preying on insects.
