On our Sunday drive, Don and I came across this bizarre sight at the end of a dirt road up in the mountains of Rider Hollow. Apparently a weekender planted some saplings in a small fenced area to protect them from deer. Our guess is he must have thought spring was here to stay, put a sprinkler on a timer, then went home to the city perhaps a week or so ago.

Although the early morning temperature yesterday was 11 F, the sprinkler gamely did its job, continuing to spew water onto the rising ice columns.
