Two GREAT Champs and an excellent event with many winners!

I’m posting this photo today, October 5, 2025, in honor of the New Orleans Saints, who won a game today. 26 to 14 over the New York Giants. (The Saints had to come from behind, of course.)

Your mother is arriving tomorrow afternoon. So how do you propose to entertain her up here on the North Las Vegas Strip for four days? 🤔

This radio is still in its original wrapping. The reverse side is imprinted with Coca-Cola Classique and CKAC 73AM. It was likely a game day promotional item for fans attending an Expos game.

I didn't think I would be able to post this week for Macro Monday's theme of "hobbies" but found that I could. This is a hobby most of you can easily relate to, I think...collecting sports memorabilia. My "hobby" (or dare I say passion?) is photographing patterns and textures close-up in an artistic manner.

Knute Kenneth Rockne (March 4, 1888 – March 31, 1931) was an American football player and coach at the University of Notre Dame. Leading Notre Dame for 13 seasons, Rockne accumulated over 100 wins and three national championships. Rockne is regarded as one of the greatest coaches in college football history. His biography at the College Football Hall of Fame, where he was inducted in 1951, identifies him as "without question, American football's most-renowned coach". Rockne helped to popularize the forward pass and made the Notre Dame Fighting Irish a major factor in college football. In 1931, at the age of 43, Rockne died in a plane crash.

About the American Sports Series: On September 22, 1981, the USPS inaugurated its Sports Series (sometimes called the American Sports Personalities Series), honoring some of America’s most notable athletes. The series ran until 2013 and honored notable athletes from a variety of sports including golf, baseball, tennis, football, and boxing.

Why the stamp was issued: To commemorate Knute Rockne’s 100th birthday. About the stamp design: The USPS received a variety of photos from Notre Dame University, and a few were sketched into stamp designs. One showing Rockne in a business hat was criticized for closely resembling Al Capone. Another of the football coach in a sweatshirt was also unpopular with the committee. The USPS then asked the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to take the project over. BEP designer Peter Cocci and engraver Thomas Hipschen worked together on a design based on a photo of Rockne smiling and holding a football. Special design details: The gold bar and blue lettering at the bottom of the stamp are Notre Dame’s school colors. First Day City: The First Day ceremony for this stamp was held in the filed house of Notre Dame University in Notre Dame, Indiana. President Ronald Reagan was a guest speaker at the ceremony. He had played Notre Dame football player George Gipp in in the film about Rockne’s life, Knute Rockne, All American. Unusual fact about this stamp: This stamp design was reproduced on tickets for all Notre Dame home games in the fall of 1988.

Tex Schramm - Texas Earnest Schramm Jr. (June 2, 1920 – July 15, 2003) was an American professional football executive who was the original president and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys franchise of the National Football League (NFL). Schramm, usually referred to as "Tex", became the head of the Cowboys when the former expansion team started operations in 1960.

Ace Parker - Clarence McKay "Ace" Parker (May 17, 1912 – November 6, 2013) was an American football and baseball player and coach. He played professional football as a quarterback, tailback and safety in the National Football League (NFL) for the Brooklyn Dodgers (1937–1941) and the Boston Yanks (1945) and in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) for the New York Yankees. He was an All-American selection at Duke University in 1936. Parker also played in the Major League Baseball during 1936 and 1937 with the Philadelphia Athletics. He served as the head baseball coach at Duke from 1953 to 1966. Parker was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1955 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1972.

Sid Gilman - Sidney Gillman (October 26, 1911 – January 3, 2003) was an American football player, coach and executive. Gillman's insistence on stretching the football field by throwing deep downfield passes, instead of short passes to running backs or wide receivers at the sides of the line of scrimmage, was instrumental in making football into the modern game that it is today. He was inducted as a coach into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983, and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989. Gillman played football as an end at Ohio State University from 1931 to 1933. He played professionally for one season in 1936 with the Cleveland Rams of the second American Football League. After serving as an assistant coach at Ohio State from 1938 to 1940, Gillman was the head football coach at Miami University from 1944 to 1947 and at the University of Cincinnati from 1949 to 1954, compiling a career college football record of 81–19–2. He then moved to the ranks of professional football, where he headed the NFL's Los Angeles Rams (1955–1959), the American Football League's Los Angeles and San Diego Chargers (1960–1969), and the NFL's Houston Oilers (1973–1974), amassing a career record of 123–104–7 in the National Football League and the American Football League. Gillman's 1963 San Diego Chargers won the AFL Championship.

Jan Stenerud - Jan Stenerud (born November 26, 1942) is a Norwegian-American former professional football placekicker who played in the National Football League and American Football League for 19 seasons, primarily with the Kansas City Chiefs. The first Norwegian NFL player, he played college football for the Montana State Bobcats and earned All-American honors. Stenerud began his career in the AFL after being selected by the Chiefs during the 1966 draft and joined the NFL following the AFL–NFL merger. Along with his 13 seasons in Kansas City, Stenerud was a member of the Green Bay Packers for four seasons and the Minnesota Vikings for two seasons until retiring in 1985. Stenerud was a six-time all-star (four NFL Pro Bowls and two AFL All-Star games) during his career, as well as a four-time first-team All-Pro in the NFL and a two-time first-team All-AFL. The season prior to the AFL–NFL merger, he also helped the Chiefs win their first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl IV. He was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1991 as the first exclusive placekicker to receive the honor, a distinction he held alone until the induction of Morten Andersen in 2017.

Andy Robustelli - Andrew Richard Robustelli (December 6, 1925 – May 31, 2011) was an American professional football player who was a defensive end in the National Football League for the Los Angeles Rams and the New York Giants. He played college football at Arnold College and was selected in the nineteenth round of the 1951 NFL draft. Robustelli was a six-time first-team All-Pro selection and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971.

Weeb Ewbank - Wilbur Charles "Weeb" Ewbank (May 6, 1907 – November 17, 1998) was an American professional football coach. He led the Baltimore Colts to consecutive NFL championships in 1958 and 1959 and the New York Jets to victory in Super Bowl III in January 1969. He is the only coach to win a championship in both the National Football League and American Football League. Raised in Indiana, Ewbank attended Miami University in Ohio, where he was a multi-sport star who led his baseball, basketball, and football teams to state championships. He immediately began a coaching career after graduating, working at Ohio high schools between 1928 and 1943, when he entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. While in the military, Ewbank was an assistant to Paul Brown on a service football team at Naval Station Great Lakes outside of Chicago. Ewbank was discharged in 1945 and coached college sports for three years before reuniting with Brown as an assistant with the Cleveland Browns, a professional team in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). The Browns won all four AAFC championships. They joined the NFL with the league's merger in 1950, winning the championship that year. Ewbank left the Browns after the 1953 season to become head coach of the Colts, a young NFL team that had struggled in its first season. In 1956, Ewbank brought in quarterback Johnny Unitas, who quickly became a star and helped lead a potent offense that included wide receiver Raymond Berry and fullback Alan Ameche to an NFL championship in 1958. The Colts repeated as champions in 1959, but the team's performance slipped over the next three seasons and Ewbank was fired three weeks after their final game of the 1962 season. He was soon picked up by the Jets, a team in the still new AFL. While his first few years were unsuccessful, Ewbank helped build the Jets into a contender after signing Alabama quarterback Joe Namath in 1965. The Jets won the AFL championship in 1968, and then went on to win Super Bowl III in one of the biggest upsets in NFL history. Ewbank, who was known as a mild-mannered coach who favored simple but well-executed strategies, retired after the 1973 season and settled in Oxford, Ohio. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1978, and died twenty years later in Oxford on November 17, 1998, the 30th anniversary of the "Heidi Game".

Vintage 1948 Major League Baseball World Series Program between the Boston Braves and the Cleveland Indians. Interesting sports memorabilia considering the Boston Braves are now the Atlanta Braves (with a stopover in Milwaukee in between) and the Cleveland Indians are now the Guardians. Although this magazine is in very rough condition (everything can’t be mint), it still deserves to be seen by those with interest in such items. It’s always a thrill when it’s from Vinnie DeVille!
