I received this painting today (10/18/2016). It's mine now to hang on the wall. Such deep emotion stirs within me. This is Etty Hillesum...if you feel so inclined...look for a book about her on Amazon. There are many that tell her beautiful story...but her journal gives you her story in her own words. The world lost her at Auschwitz, but her words remain in my memory and heart.

A Poem for Etty

I didn’t know you,

Still, you have become my friend

I didn’t see you,

And you have found me anyway

I didn’t hear you,

Until I discovered your voice

I didn’t seek you,

But grace has delivered you

I didn’t know your wisdom,

So now your story absorbs me

I didn’t know your suffering,

And yet your experience has saved me

I didn’t know your short journey,

But a saint you have become

I didn’t know you,

But now I do-thank you

A Brief Biography of The Supreme Master Ching Hai

"A Master is one who has the key for you to become a Master...to help you realize that you are also a Master and that you and God are also One. That's all...that's the only role of the Master."

"Our path is not a religion. I do not convert anyone to Catholicism or Buddhism, or any other "ism." I simply offer you a way to know yourself, to find out where you come from, to remember your mission here on earth, to discover the secrets of the universe, to understand why there is so much misery, and see what awaits us after death."

"We are separated from God because we are too busy. If someone is talking to you and the telephone keeps ringing, and you are busy cooking or chatting with other people, then no one can get in touch with you. The same thing happens with God. He is calling every day and we have no time for Him and keep hanging up on Him."

-The Supreme Master Ching Hai-

The Supreme Master Ching Hai was born in Au Lac (Vietnam). Her father was a highly reputed Naturopath. He loved to study world literature and was especially interested in philosophy. Among his favorites were the writings of Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu which were available to The Supreme Master Ching Hai as a young child. She had read these and other Buddhist texts before she had entered primary school.

The Supreme Master Ching Hai was not a typical child. She was often found reading philosophical literature when the other children were doing homework and playing. This concerned her father who asked her if she understood these works. She answered him "If I didn't understand, I wouldn't have any interest in doing this." Although he remained concerned, she consistently did excellent work in school so he supported her unusual interests.

Although her parents were Catholic, they were open to Buddhism. Suma Ching Hai's grandmother, a Buddhist, whom Master loved to spend time with taught Her the scriptures and Buddhist worship. The Supreme Master Ching Hai developed a very open attitude toward religion due to this background. She would attend Catholic Church in the morning, Buddhist temple in the afternoon and in the evening would listen to lectures on the holy teachings. This left Her with many spiritual questions, "Where did we come from? What is life after death? Why are people so different?"

At one time, there was a shortage of doctors and nurses in Her town, so Master helped in the hospital after Her classes. She washed patients, emptied bedpans and did errands in Her efforts to ease the suffering. Her friends in different countries often called Her the "living Buddha" or the "funny saint" because of Her sense of humor and kindness to everyone.

She has always had a soft spot for animals and has been known often to take a wounded animal home, care for it and release it. If she saw an animal slaughtered, she would cry, wishing that she could prevent the suffering in the world. She has been a vegetarian and has always been repulsed by the sight of killing, and of meat all Her life.

When The Supreme Master Ching Hai was a child, an astrologer said that She was an unusual, very intelligent being with superior character and morals. It was predicted that She would be a renunciate and become enlightened if not married, but if married, She would have a happy relationship and an admirable husband. This same prediction was repeated many other times in Her later life.

When The Supreme Master Ching Hai left home to become a nun, Her mother went to a Quan Yin temple to pray for advice. She chose a temple where the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva was said to answer all questions of sincere devotees. She was told, "The Master is a very rare and noble child, one of a billion. She has come to this world, on the mission of Quan Yin, to save sentient beings from misery."

She worked for a time in Germany as a translator for the Red Cross. She translated Au Lac Language, German and English, and voluntarily also worked long hours in the service of Au Lac refugees at the expense of her own health and comfort. Her work with Red Cross put The Supreme Master Ching Hai in contact with refugees from many countries. She continuously saw suffering and turmoil brought on by wars and natural disasters. The Supreme Master Ching Hai suffered a great deal as She sought to alleviate the pain She saw, and realized how impossible it was for one person to stop the suffering of humanity. This drove Her more strongly toward enlightenment, as she realized that only this could help alleviate mankind's pain. Therefore, while living in Europe, She practiced Her meditation even more seriously. She sought out new teachers, read everything She could find and practiced many methods She often felt that this was not working, however, and that She was not experiencing the spiritual phenomena She read about in the scriptures, nor was she reaching an enlightened state. This was extremely frustrating for Her.

The Supreme Master Ching Hai has an unusual broad view toward all religions. She has studied and teaches the words of Jesus, Buddha, Lao Tzu and many others. She constantly shows the similarities among the great teachings and lets us see through Her eyes how all the great Masters are preaching the same Truth. She often explains how different religious opinions have arisen due only to the difference in opinions of different people in different countries at different times.

While in Germany, The Supreme Master Ching Hai was happily married to a German scientist. He had doctorates in two fields. He was a kind, attentive and supportive husband. He became a vegetarian, travelled with his wife on pilgrimages and was very supportive of her charitable works. Eventually, The Supreme Master Ching Hai felt that She needed to leave Her marriage in order to pursue Her spiritual goal. She discussed this at great length with Her husband and the separation was with his agreement. This was an extremely difficult decision for both of them, but She felt very strongly that this was the right decision for Her and that She needed to do this in order to pursue enlightenment.

After leaving Her marriage, The Supreme Master Ching Hai sought the perfect method which could lead one to attain liberation in one lifetime. In the Surangama Sutra, Sakyamuni Buddha said that the Quan Yin Method was the highest of all methods. However none of Her teachers knew it. She travelled and searched everywhere and finally, after many years, found a Himalayan Master who initiated Her into the Quan Yin Method and gave Her the Divine Transmission that She had sought for so many years. After a brief period of Quan Yin practice, She became fully enlightened and continued practicing and improving Her understanding. She remained in retreat in the Himalayas for some time, continuing Her daily practice.

Eventually, The Supreme Master Ching Hai travelled to Formosa. One evening, during a typhoon with heavy rain, as She meditated in a room behind a small temple in Formosa, a group of people knocked at Her door. When Master asked them why they had come they answered, "Quan Yin Bodhisattva (The Goddess of Mercy) replied to our prayers and told us about you, saying that you are the great Master and we should pray to you for the method to reach liberation." Master tried to send them away but they would not go. Finally Master was touched by their sincerity and devotion and agreed to initiate them after several months of purification and their agreement to adhere to a vegetarian diet.

Shy in nature, The Supreme Master Ching Hai did not seek out students to teach. In fact, She ran away from people who sought Her initiation. This happened in India, and in the United States where She was living the unassuming life of a Buddhist nun. When She was "discovered" for the third time in Formosa, She realized that She must not run away from the inevitable tasks that lie ahead. She began sharing with all who wished to hear Her message of Truth, and She began initiating sincere students into the Quan Yin Method.

The Supreme Master Ching Hai's work has spread by word of mouth from this first small group in Formosa to many hundreds of thousands. Most of Master's initiates are in Formosa, because that is where She has stayed the longest. In recent years She has travelled and taught throughout Asia, the United States, Latin America and Europe. Many people from all walks of life, and from many different religious backgrounds, have made great spiritual progress with Her help. Although no formal organization exists to spread Her teachings, grateful friends and disciples are to be found all over the world, ready and willing to help others learn from their beloved Master.

In addition to helping countless numbers of people through Her spiritual teachings and initiations. The Supreme Master Ching Hai has used her boundless energy to assist those who are suffering or in need. In recent years, Her humanitarian efforts have touched the hearts and lives of millions of people all over the world. Master does not discriminate between suffering caused by spiritual ignorance, material privation, or circumstantial events. Wherever there is suffering, She will help.

Some of The Supreme Master Ching Hai's humanitarian activities in the past few years include aid to: the homeless throughout the United States; victims of fire in southern California; victims of floods in the Midwest United States, central and eastern Mainland China, Malaysia, Au Lac, Holland, Belgium and France; disadvantaged elderly in Brazil; those displaced by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines; disaster victims in northern Thailand; destitute families in Formosa and Singapore; lepers on Molokai, Hawaii; spiritual communities in India, Germany and Uganda; families of mentally retarded children in Hawaii; victims of the Los Angeles earthquake; veterans of the United States; orphanages in Au Lac; institutions of medical research on AIDS and cancer in the United States; and many, many others. Of course, we must also mention The Supreme Master Ching Hai's neverending and tireless efforts to help the Au Lac refugees, those both inside and out of refugee camps.

Although She has not sought acknowledgement of any kind, The Supreme Master Ching Hai has been recognized and honored for Her humanitarian work by government officials throughout the world. For example, October 25, 1993 was proclaimed "The Supreme Master Ching Hai Day" by the mayor of Honolulu Hawaii, and February 22, 1994 was likewise proclaimed by the governors of the States of Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Kansas, Missouri and Minnesota. She also received the "World Peace Award" in Honolulu, an the "World Spiritual Leadership Award" at a ceremony in Chicago on February 22, 1994. Congratulatory messages were sent to the Chicago ceremony by many government officials worldwide, including Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Reagan.

The sales of all her artistic endeavors have enabled Master Ching Hai to create an independent source of funding for humanitarian activities, highlighting her pragmatic view that we should always try and create our own means from which to give others.

Master Ching Hai told us that She was not always enlightened. She lived a normal worldly life, and knows from experience about our problems, our heartaches, passions, desires and doubts. She also knows the Heavenly Realms of Buddhahood, and how to get there from here. Her sole function at this point in Her life is to help us with our journey from the suffering and confusion of the unawakened state to the Bliss and Absolute Clarity of Total Divine Realization. If you are ready, She is here to take you home!

The Supreme Master Ching Hai gives a variety of lectures to interested students according to their backgrounds and cultures; no matter if one is Christian, Moslem, Buddhist or Taoist, etc.. She speaks in English, French, German, Chinese, and Au Lac Language. Those who wish to learn and practice the Quan Yin Method with The Supreme Master Ching Hai are welcomed to receive Her initiation. Her lectures and initiation are offered free of charge.

The principle of Hiranyagarbha is spread all over the body. It assumes a form when I will it. Whoever has seen this Lingam at the time of its emergence will not have rebirth. One should see its form as It emerges. In order to sanctify your lives, such sacred manifestations have to be shown to you every now and then. Only then can you understand the divinity in humanity. This Lingam will not break even if it is dropped from a height with force. This is Amruthatwam (immortality). It is changeless. You cannot see such a manifestation anywhere else in the world. It is possible only with Divinity.

Avoid boastful thoughts about your physical achievements and material accumulations. Contemplate over the ultimate reality of existence. That alone will give meaning to life

Vibhuti, a word of Sanskrit and several other languages of India. Literally, it has several meanings including all pervading; superhuman power; and wealth. Vibhuti is also the name for sacred ash used in religious worship in Hinduism, especially connected with Lord Shiva. The ash has several symbolic meanings. Placed on the forehead of devotees, it covers the mark of the spiritual third eye of Hindu belief that sees development of mystic insight as the primary path to Self-realization. It is a reminder of one's mortality since bodies are cremated being only temporary vessels of the soul. It calls to the good of ridding oneself of selfish and base worldly desires that wrap the self in maya just as Shiva burned the god of desire, Kama, to ashes when he attempted to break Shiva's focus on the Divine Truth.

Vibhuti or Vibhooti also refers to the paranormal powers that Sage Patanjali claims that one can develop by the practices described in his book on Yoga Sutras, part of body of Hindu philosophy.

The practise of smearing holy ash on the forehead also exists in the Zoroastrian religion, which was a descendant of the Vedic/Avestan religion of India and Iran.

In Fady Bahig's novel The Journey of The Fool, Faust Amoyo dismisses Sri Bakashananda as a false guru right after watching him materialize vibhuti.

Om Sai Ram

MAHA SHIVARATHRI

Today is the auspicious day of Sivarathri. What is Sivam? It means auspiciousness. God is the embodiment of Sathyam, Sivam, Sundaram (Truth, Auspiciousness and Beauty). All that you see, hear and experience should be offered to God.

Tridalam Trigunakaram Trinetramcha Triyayudham;

Trijanma Papa Samharam Eka Bilvam Sivarpanam.

Offer a trifoliate Bilva leaf to Lord Siva, the three-eyed Lord having a trident in His hand which destroys the sins of three births. People undertake various Sadhanas and different modes of worship on the basis of their own imagination. Whatever may be the Sadhana, one should not give up the resolve. One should have single-pointed attention. One should listen only to the principle of oneness. One should offer one?s actions to God. Karmanyevadhikarasthe Ma Phaleshu Kadachana (Action is thy duty, fruit is not thy concern). Whatever you do, let it be pleasing unto God. Sarva Karma Bhagavad Preethyartham (do all actions to please God). Then no sin will accrue to you. There is no easier path than this to experience the Atmic principle

You may get some thoughts which are like clouds. Do not be carried away by them. Do not pay heed to all and sundry and ruin yourself. You should rise to the level of Divine and not degenerate to the level of demon. In order to rise to the level of divine, Satsang is very essential. One thought, one vision and one action. These three must be unified. Sivarathri is celebrated to recognize the oneness of Divinity. When you do Bhajans tonight, you will have only one thought. You will experience the bliss of Bhajan. It is the non-dual bliss. Why is it prescribed that you should do Bhajans all through the night? Bhajan is done to control the mind and focus it on Divinity.

The message of holy Sivarathri is to spread the ideal and sanctity of this most auspicious day to one and all. The principle of unity is slowly declining among the people of the world. There is strife and discord between even two brothers of the same small family.

In the divine family of Lord Siva, there are only four members, namely, Lord Easvara, his consort Parvati, and the two sons, Subramanya and Vinayaka. This is an ideal family. There is no difference of opinion whatsoever either between husband and wife or the two brothers. There is perfect accord and harmony in their family. Mother Parvati and Lord Paramesvara wanted to set an example to the whole world in the matter of a most harmonious, perfect and loving relationship between a wife and husband and between brothers. A family is the most important functional unit in the world. If the family is running on sound lines, the world will also run smoothly. If the unity among the family members suffers even to a small extent, the world will face the repercussions. Unity gives strength to the lives of the family members. Therefore, every family should strive for achieving unity and harmonious relationship among its members. Every family should strive to emulate the example of Lord Siva's family. Today, even if there are only two sons in a family, there is no harmony between them. Similar is the case of husband and wife. This is not the position in respect of Lord Siva's family. The vehicles they ride, the circumstances in which they function, the wealth they possess - in fact, in every aspect, the members of this divine family set an example to the whole world.

For example, Lord Siva's vehicle is Nandi, the bull. Mother Parvati's vehicle is Lion. The younger son, Subramanya's vehicle is peacock, whereas the elder son Vinayaka's is the tiny mouse. They move about the whole world on such strange vehicles which are antagonistic in nature but still lead a perfect and harmonious family life.

If you wish to attain happiness, live in happiness. The universal family of Lord Siva, Mother Parvati, Subramanya and Vinayaka are the perfect example for this principle. Cultivate their example. Worship them. But, a caution - you may worship a picture as God, but not God as a picture. Therefore, you worship the Easwara family by following their example. The message of this holy Sivarathri is to live in unity and harmony with everyone. Particularly, the brothers in a family should never fight; they must be united, like the Pandavas. It is only by their unity, Pandavas could obtain the Divine Grace of Lord Krishna. Anything can be achieved with unity. Take for example, the five fingers in the hand. It is only when the five fingers join together, we can accomplish any task. The Kauravas were one hundred in number, but they were not united for a good cause. Ultimately, what fate had befallen them? Similarly, Vali and Sugriva in Ramayana. They were in fact brothers. Due to some differences, they developed hatred against one another. In the end, Vali met his end in the hands of Rama. The ultimate goal of this Sivarathri is to develop unity among humanity, whatever be the obstacles, whatever be the difficulties and whatever be the provocations. You should never make use of harsh words while speaking to others. Always speak sweetly and softly, with a loving heart.

From blazing-splendor.blogspot.com/2006/05/early-photo-of-dzon...

Regarding the great Khyentses, emanating multiple simultaneous treasure lives. "Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche said about this master:

When Old Khyentse passed away, the fifteenth Karmapa saw in a vision that instead of just a single reincarnation, twenty-five emanations would appear, each embodying one of the twenty-five aspects of fruition: five each for enlightened body, speech, mind, qualities, and activity. Among these, five principal incarnations were recognized and enthroned. That’s why we see so many reincarnations these days with the name Khyentse.

It is said that the activity of these amazing Khyentse incarnations is unceasing, like the moon rising when the sun sets: when one passes away, another appears in his place. When he died, several tulkus appeared to take over his Dharma activities. Seen from our side, while one of them dissolves back into the buddhafield, another emanation appears, sometimes even more brilliant than the previous one. After the great Khyentse died, Dzongsar Khyentse appeared, who was equally amazing. Then when Dzongsar Khyentse set, Dilgo Khyentse rose."

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dzongsar_Jamyang_Khyentse_Rinpoche

"The second incarnation was the renowned lama Dzongsar Khyentse Chokyi Lodro (1893-1959), who figured prominently in the export of Tantric Buddhism to the West as the root-teacher of a generation of influential and forward-thinking lamas.

A biographical portrait of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche exists in documentary feature film form. The film came out in 2003, and is called Words of My Perfect Teacher. It is a portrait of the Vajrayana Buddhist student-teacher relationship."

Mutter Meera

Mutter Meera - Eine kurze Biography

Mother Meera

Mother Meera is one of the most widely revered and loved of the Avatars of the Divine Mother. Born on December 26, 1960, in the village of Chandepalle in southern India, Mother Meera soon showed herself to be an unusual child: by the age of three she would report "going to various lights." Her parents treated Mother Meera as an exceptional child and loved her very much. Her family was not especially religious and she was not brought up in any tradition. Mother Meera's real parents were the spiritual guides that she met in vision; it was from them that she received the love and help she needed. The state of samadhi was constant for her. Under the auspices of her uncle, Mr. Reddy, Mother Meera lived for some time in Pondicherry where her extraordinary presence attracted considerable attention.

Mother Meera married a German in 1982; and he stays with her. She presently lives at Schaumburg, Balduinstein, a quiet village in Germany. Although she has not sought publicity, thousands of people from all over the world come to receive her Darshan, her silent bestowal of grace and light through her gaze and touch. Mother Meera is worshipped as a Divine Mother in India.

The unique gift of Mother Meera to the world is to make available for the first time in the history of the Earth the radically transformative Light of Paramatman, the Supreme Being. In this time of crisis and growing spiritual hunger, the Mother offers her children a direct transmission of Light that dissolves all barriers and changes the entire being. The Paramatman Light can be received by all who are open, whether or not they have met Mother Meera in the body. As an incarnation of the Divine Mother, Mother Meera stands above all dogmas and hierarchies. She asks no special allegiance, and offers her trans- formative power to all, no matter what their path or religion.

(from Mother Meera, Answers Part I)

His Holiness Younus AlGohar explains the pivotal role a divinely ordained Spiritual Master plays in taking a seeker of God’s love to their destination.

Main points:

- There are certain things that God gives to humanity without them needing to ask for it. Then, there are certain things you have to work hard to obtain. The most precious thing that God has to offer is his love. If you want luxuries of the world, God will give them to you but he will be put off; you will just have to work hard business-wise to obtain it. If you want luxuries of paradise, God will still not be happy but he will give it to you as long as you adopt a religion. Religions are the means for human beings to obtain luxuries of the paradise.

- We're visitors here. Death is not end of life. Your soul is the real you. It is ethereal. This world was not meant to be compatible with your soul. To this world, your soul is a foreign living. This is why you need a body. Your body is the container and it is dense. It is compatible with the atmosphere here.

- This life is a mixture of two different types of life: Eternal Life (which is in the background) and Temporal Life (which we tend to think is everything). In the time here, you're meant to enlighten your souls. The more you strengthen them, the better place you'll avail in real life hereafter.

- Spirituality is to do with enlightening your souls, strengthening them and enabling them to perform a journey to the realm from which they come. The most important thing in spirituality is your Spiritual Master. Without them, you cannot move an inch in spirituality. The Spiritual Master awakens your soul. He is the first one to communicate with your soul, before even you communicate with your soul.

- The body is like a spiritual dormitory for the soul. The Second Birth is Spiritual Birth: when your soul is awakened by Jesus or a Holy Master. The condition of the soul in the body is like a baby chick in an egg. The egg enclosing the soul is known as the Terrestrial Egg. To hatch a hen's egg, the hen provides heat. To hatch soul out of the Terrestrial Egg, the Spiritual Master provides Divine Energy.

- When God put the soul inside that Terrestrial Egg, God was the last one it saw. When it is awakened, the Holy Master is the first one the soul sees. The soul's understanding develops that the Holy Master is its Lord since the last one it saw before being put in the Terrestrial Egg was God. When a baby is born, it cries. The first thing the soul does is say the name of the Lord when it is awakened. Then, a wire of Divine Energy from the Holy Master's heart will be inserted in disciple's heart. That's how the soul will be nursed spiritually.

People often complain that they are wrongly accused of things which they have not done. This leads to a lot of tension and negativity among people not only for themselves but also for the people around them. In the following video Pujya Deepakbhai points out that no individual can ever interfere in another persons matters. We suffer only on the basis of our past mistakes.

...Narada Rsi said there is only one way:

“guru-śuśrūṣayā bhaktyā sarva-labdhārpaṇena ca saṅgena sādhu-bhaktānām īśvarārādhanena caśraddhayā tat-kathāyāṁ ca kīrtanair guṇa-karmaṇām tat-pādāmburuha-dhyānāt tal-liṅgekṣārhaṇādibhiḥ”(Srimad Bhagavatam 7.7.30-31)

“One must accept the bona fide spiritual master and render service unto him with great devotion and faith. Whatever one has in one’s possession should be offered to the spiritual master, and in the association of saintly persons and devotees one should worship the Lord, hear the glories of the Lord with faith, glorify the transcendental qualities and activities of the Lord, always meditate on the Lord’s lotus feet, and worship the Deity of the Lord strictly according to the injunctions of the śāstra and guru.”

“Guru-śuśrūṣayā bhaktyā sarva-labdhārpaṇena ca”; by rendering service to guru you can conquer all of your senses and attain the Lord.

Srimad Bhagavatam very clearly discusses how we will enter into spiritual life. If someone properly follows grhasta jivana, that grhasta will be higher than the brahma jnani, yogi and tapasvi. I will give an example, sastra gives evidence. If you read Caitanya Caritamrta, the dialogue between Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Raya Ramananda. Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself asked Raya Ramananda:

“prabhu kahe, — “pa a śloka sādhyera nirṇaya” rāya kahe, — “sva-dharmācaraṇe viṣṇu-bhakti haya” ” (Sri Caitanya Caritamrta Madhya lila 8.57)

“Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu ordered Rāmānanda Rāya, “Recite a verse from the revealed scriptures concerning the ultimate goal of life.””

“Prabhu kahe “pa a śloka sādhyera nirṇaya”” Lord Caitanya asked Raya Ramananda “Can you explain what is our goal and what is our process?” What is our goal? How to attain Krsna prema, but in the beginning what should we do?

“varṇāśramācāra-vatā puruṣeṇa paraḥ pumānviṣṇur ārādhyate panthā nānyat tat-toṣa-kāraṇam”(Sri Caitanya Caritamrta Madhya lila 8.58/ Viṣṇu Purāṇa (3.8.9))

“The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Viṣṇu, is worshiped by the proper execution of prescribed duties in the system of varṇa and āśrama. There is no other way to satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead. One must be situated in the institution of the four varṇas and āśramas.”

“Varṇāśramācāra-vatā puruṣeṇa paraḥ pumān” If someone follows all of the rules and regulations of Varnasrama dharma then Bhagavan Visnu will be very pleased. Our aim and object is what? How the Lord will be pleased. ‘Bhagavat prasannata’- This is our aim and object, how the Lord will be pleased.

So the first sloka explains this:

“varṇāśramācāra-vatā puruṣeṇa paraḥ pumānviṣṇur ārādhyate panthā nānyat tat-toṣa-kāraṇam”

There are no other ways to please the Lord. First follow varnasrama dharma. If you follow varnasrama dharma then you will be higher than the yogis, jnanis and others.

I will give an example. Once one brahmacari performed hard austerities; ‘chator tapasya’. For about 30 years he left his house and he went into the jungle. For thirty years he performed hard austerities. He stood on the tips of his toes and raised his two hands. His hair turned into jata, dreadlocks. Big, big jata grew, but still he performed hard austerities for thirty years. Even some birds built a nest in his dreadlocks. Then one day, after thirty years, he opened his eyes. In the meantime, one bird came out from the nest and passed stool on his nose. At that time he became very angry, he opened his red eyes and the bird was burned into ashes. Then he realized “By the strength gained by my austerities, I have destroyed that bird”.

Then he left the jungle, and he arrived in the countryside. First he went to the house of one householder, a very perfect grhasta, not ‘cats and dogs’ householder. A perfect grhasta. Try to understand the meaning of grhasta. Grhasta and grhamedi are not the same thing. What is the meaning of grhasta? ‘Householder’ means what?

“na gṛhaṁ gṛham ity āhurgṛhiṇī gṛham ucyatetayā hi sahitaḥ sarvān puruṣārthān samaśnute”( Sri Caitanya Caritamrta, Adi Lila, 15.27)

“Merely a house is not a home, for it is a wife who gives a home its meaning. If one lives at home with his wife, together they can fulfill all the interests of humanlife.”

If you live in a house, this is not called ‘grha’. Grha means ‘patni saha, bharya saha nivashet’. When someone lives in his house with his wife and performs bhajana and sadhana to the Lord, that is called a grhasta. That is called grha; grha mandir. If you stay with your wife and perform bhajana and sadhana in the proper way that is called grhasta jivana.

Another type of person who lives in a house is called ‘grhamedi’. ‘Medi’ means those who are so much attached and who are only moving around their house. Grhamedi. In the past, some farmers took the seeds of wheat or mustard and put one stick in the middle and a rope, and all of the cows would walk around the stick, around one place, that is called medi. Those who are only staying in their house, who are not chanting, not doing any bhajana or sadhana, and who are only attached to their wife and children are called grhamedi.Srimad Bhagavatam and also the Vedas explain that their lives are completely useless. ‘Grhasta’ means they perform bhajana and sadhana to Krsna. The centre is only Krsna....
