London Bridge and the Shard

Having seen the spectacular old Methodist Church (Uniting) in Ross, built in 1885, I thought I would try to give it a more dramatic look. As you know we have already seen how this church from one angle looks very similar to the famous Church at Auvers painted by Vincent van Gogh.

That sky was quite dramatic all afternoon, so making it a feature of this shot was very important. I've called the picture "The Spire" and had in mind William Golding's novel of the same name (1964). It can be described as "a dark and powerful portrait of one man's will", and deals with the construction of the 404-foot high spire loosely based on the famous Salisbury Cathedral.

I took this from the old bridge. The lamps compliment the spires.

View of Cathedral Spires and Black Elk Wilderness from the Needles Highway. The Needles are part of the Black Hills region of south-western South Dakota. Needles are granite pillars, very sharp and dramatic, scattered at the top of the ridge. They are accessible by a two-lane road that merits the name of a highway only because it is, well, rather high. It is fun to drive and the scenery is impressive, especially in Autumn.

Note the map on the right. Unorganized Territory - yes, that sounds quite accurate. :-)

Cinq minutes de pluie orageuse et les plantes sourient. C'est loiin d'être suffisant mais c'est mieux que rien. Il n'avait pas plu depuis plusieurs semaines.

Five minutes of stormy rain and the plants smile. It is not enough at all as it hadn't rained for several weeks but it's better than no rain at all.

Salisbury Cathedral

The main body was built in the early 13th century and apparently has the tallest church spire in the UK which was adding in the 14th (I think).

The spires of Predigerkirche, Fraumünster and St. Peterskirche, over Zürich, Switzerland.

Built collectively across the 13th to 18th centuries, together they represent three of the four major churches in the city, as seen from Zürich University.

Captured one cold winter night, these two cathedral spires are an iconic landmark of our city.

Built in 1872, Holy Name Cathedral has a seating capacity of 1,400, and its twin spires reach 170 feet heavenward.
