i fell behind the group trying to photograph this funny fruit. no idea what the tree is.

Superwash merino - will be navajo plied to make sock yarn. On one of my own resin spindles, this one has rose petals in the whorl.
This unique 1.1 ounce (30gram) moose antler rim weighted top whorl drop spindle has been intricately carved by Dave with his signature leaf motif. The notched whorl measures 1 5/8 inches in diameter, and the cocobolo shaft is 7 1/4 inches in length. The bottom of the shaft has been shaped to accommodate a half hitch and a brass hook has been added to the top.
Repair of spindle in progress: speed: about 200rpm; my left hand acting as 'tailstock'; camera in my right hand. Vern's holding a piece of oily heavy duty Scotchbrite (the gray stuff) and removing the galling from the spindle. Took about 5-10min to set it to rights.

This is a WIP shot of some spindle spun yarn from one of my first dyed roving, Rosie, and spun on one of my handmade drop spindles.
This was my birthday present for last year, which did not arrive until just before Christmas. It is a Loki spindle from Greensleeves Spindles .
The whorl is masur birch, and the shaft is walnut. The view on the left shows the warmth of the colour much better, but the other one shows the figuring on the other side of the whorl better.
It weighs 34.6 grams, and is 8" long, excluding the hook. The whorl is 2.25" across.

I was interested what the overall colour impression would be for the month -- not as green as I'd expected

My ten spindles (nine and a spare) took most of day two to shape. These are roughed-out spindles that will be dried in a heating closet for about 4 days
Henry Moore (1898-1986) born in nearby Castleford, was the most celebrated sculptor of his time. Commissioned to produce works for such institutions as the Time Life building in London, the Lincoln Center in New York and the Unesco Headquarters in Paris, he is best known for his monumental bronze sculptures based on abstractions of the human figure. His modernist creations, particularly his reclining figures, appear to be based on the landscapes that surrounded him.

Originally intended to be sited in the new development of Tranquility Park, Houston; upon visiting the site Moore felt, however, that his sculpture would be better suited to a location where the architecture of its surroundings had less impact on the sculpture. Large Spindle Piece was later relocated to Buffalo Bayou Park.

the early days
Step 2: wrap yarn clockwise around shaft, but not all the way back to Corner #1. Stop at Corner #4.
Step 3: bring yarn under the spindle and diagonally across to Corner #2. (see third photo for an underside view of this step)
Step 4: twist the base of the spindle so that what was Corner #2 takes the place of Corner #1 and Repeat.
Note: In the photo I'm holding the spindle between my knees so that I have a free hand for photoshooting. Normally I hold the base of the spindle in my right hand and the yarn in my left.
