Female Argiope bruennichi (Wasp spider) seen at Blashford Lakes in Hampshire today.
1 of 20 seen today, numbers are less than last year but always good to see!
The female Habronattus pyrrithrix jumping spider is pretty inconspicuous, while males, like this guy, have these gorgeous red face patches and green leg areas that they use in courtship displays. Interestingly, a study found that the condition and fitness of males' bodies correlated positively with how brightly colored the red face was -- but correlated negatively with how bright of a green was on his legs. The study seemed to show that the red face, more than anything, is dependent on how high-quality of a diet the spider consumed as a juvenile, therefore making it the clearest indicator (in the study) of body condition. As to the "brightness of the green," I've seen deeper-green colors on the legs of these guys, while this one's legs were more of a bright gold-green. Given his face (and his feistiness while I stalked him!), I'd say he probably made some female pretty happy. :-)
Showing her underbelly
This Orb Weaver was being blown about in its web last night but the web bowed and arched back and forth without breaking. I hope the spider got some food after that rough night.

Hatch day!
I spotted these newly hatched spiderlings the size of a pinhead busily running between foliage on strands of spider's web on their way out into the world.
I have no idea which species they are but I did have a lovely Garden Orb Weaver there last year and wonder if these are her offspring. I'd like to think so.

Spikey guy
A Lynx spider on a reed stalk in my garden. I was looking for an interesting spider all weekend to post for #spidersunday and finally found this one today.

Well fed Orb Weaver on gum leaf
I was surprised to see this very big garden Orb Weaver hiding among the leaves on my gum tree. I was taking photos of another spider at the time when I glimpsed the big abdomen like a large gall on the leaf.

Best eye-brows ever!
Nice hairy legs too!
Badge Huntsman Spider - Neosparassus sp.
This, I am told, is a juvenile since it has slightly clear limbs and will go a darker colour as it grows.

Hairy legs reporting
There I was innocently tapping away at the keys on my computer when across the monitor ran this very hairy Huntsman spider. It stopped just around the other side where I took this photo.
That was when I saw it had just come to let me know it had finished the dusting. (I could clearly see it hadn't cleaned its feet properly afterwards.)
As a reward, I took it outside to play with the outside spiders. I'm sure they had fun!

Eriophora biapicata
This garden spider that I found in my eucalyptus tree was well hidden wrapped around the small fork of some branches during the day but at night she spins a web which collects not only insects but also pollen which is a rich source of protein for her when she eats her web at the end of each night.
The spider recycles 90% of her web in making the next night's web so is very efficient in her use of energy indeed.

From #SpiderSunday!! I found this one at a cousin's house in their kitchen on Christmas Eve. I think it's a Spitting Spider (Scytodidae family). I think it could be a Scytodes species, thought I'm not sure which.
Spitting spiders get their name, because they spit a sticky liquid substance at their prey. This substance contains both venom and silk in liquid form and is produced in venom glands in their chelicerae. They target their prey from 10-20 mm away, and are deadly accurate.
What better way to start Spider Sunday than rescuing a drowning spider?
I found this huntsman spider floating in my dog's water bucket this morning. I thought it was dead s o after taking a photo, I scooped it out but it was quick to flip over and shortly after start walking up my arm. I had long sleeves on thankfully!
I kept swapping it from hand to hand till I could convince it to step off onto the window ledge.

Eency weency spider
This tiny spider was on a leaf in my vegetable patch. I wasn't sure what it was but looking at it more closely on the computer screen made me realise it's a jumping spider. Maybe a new variety for my garden.

Guarding the entrance
This saltie or jumping spider is in the entrance of a webby hide and seemed to be guarding the entrance. I couldn't see eggs inside there but suspect that there were some.

Eat prey...or wrap it for later
A St Andrew's Cross spider in its beautiful web with a lovely cross (stabilamentum) believed to warn birds off attacking this spider.
This was in my friend's garden along with at least 7 others so I had my pick of photo subjects.

Tiny, brown and crabby
(appears to be Cymbacha festiva)
This little crab spider was on top of our green bin lid yesterday when I was replacing a humped spider somewhere safe when it ended up on me. I didn't even realise it was a crab until I looked closely but when I did with my macro lens, I was fascinated by the 4 spots on its back. I wonder if it has a name like domino spider or something?

Spiny and speedy
This Lynx spider is only very small but it moved lightning fast to catch this unwary fly that landed on this reed this morning.
A nice buggy lunch for it to feed on!

Meet me in the garden
Spider photo below. If you don't like seeing spiders then make sure you block Spider Sunday from your feed.
I met this Hunstman spider on the leg of a garden bench. It wasn't too keen to come out and let me see it so here it is still under there but at least I got it on the grass a bit and facing the right way.

Size of a pin-head
This really, eency, weency spider was in a web up high and is so tiny, I had no idea until I looked at this photo on my computer screen what a pretty little thing it is.

Little orb weaver has a packed lunch
This little spider had a web between plants in my garden and clung onto its package when I approached for a photo.
I told it, I wasn't about to steal its lunch but It still kept a tight grip on the prize!

Small spotted spider on Snapdragon flower
I haven't seen one quite like this one before. The spots certainly stood out on this tiny little spider.

Looking after the eggs
This is an egg sac and two spiders of Philoponella sp. I am not exactly sure what is going on with the two spiders; I don't think they are in the right position for mating. This is one from my archive that I just came across to share for:

Wanna make a project of this or any of my work? Considering donating to me via paypal by using daverenz1@verizon.com I think a fair price would be 10% -50% of what your total project costs, as you see fit.
So if you are paying $15 to walmart, consider cutting me in for $1.50-$7.50. If that is too much, then just go ahead and enjoy it and thanks for the interest :) Perhaps just a word of thanks would be great! www.paypal.com/
Guarding the eggs
This Lynx spider didn't want to move from where her eggs are safe under a layer of webbing. She would seemingly pull the leaf over her more but didn't retreat. Maybe that is why the threads are arranged in this interesting way.
Nature is wonderful!
