Lighting technicians and -engineers all know the angular- and polar radiation patterns of circular (flat) COB LED arrays. These patterns at the same time show the problem of the light-sources: between -30⁰ and +30⁰ degrees is the highest light-output. This is the exact area of the opening of the spotlight. So most of the light of the LED leaves without being guided by the reflector, creating a light-dot in the middle of the bundle. Lighting technicians and –engineers have little to work with to “correct” this, without affecting the efficiency of the system too much.
Solution to this behavior of the flat LED array is: the spherical LED array. Instead of mounting the array on a flat piece of aluminium or ceramics, the array will be placed on a spherical shaped substrate.
