Don't bother searching or clicking the Tag "hashtag" unless on a Contact's or your own page!

Why are 3 of these blue and active links? Because the # is up against the left edge of the page.. Add a space before the #

On Flickr, hashtags work like plain tags in the tags list, but if used with the # in the Title or Description, they are live links like on Instagram....

Flickr has just changed the way you add tags now, they have removed the little arrow next to the tag and if you click the new ... Three Dots, or the Edit tags link, you are taken to a page of existing or some new Tags to use. Aug 2023....

But if you add several Tags, remember to hit the Enter key, then the Done command!

We even camped up stream, (behind the camera to the left), at the next bend with Malcolm, The Fletchers, stayed for BBQ, Ross Andrews, and Jane and our kids one night years ago...

see diary 18th Nov. 1977, Several BBQs and picnics have been enjoyed on the East side, (right bank here) where you can see the old shelter shed.

Have li-loed just upstream from the concrete ford a few times in summer.

on Sun 11th Mar 1973 we hired canoes from Dobell Boat Hire on Lake Burley Griffin and drove to here where we left the gear and took more cars and the "wives" with lunch, to Pine Island.

My ACT Forest diary lists John and Elizabeth Wood, the Walters*, Terry and Sandy Hunt, John Hicks and partner?, Larry Cornell and Suellen with us and our two kids and one on the way!

(WE collected our canoes the night before with Dad and Mum, who argued about whether to buy a house here!) Erwin rang and we chatted canoes..

After leaving gear and food at Pine Is Terry H and I to Kambah Pool to leave a car and collect other drivers, who had also left vehicles there earlier..

Just chatted about this with Mary. She has such a good memory..

She rememebers who the Walters are!!!

*One night I slept past my bus stop in Scullin and while walking back past the shops and Casteui St. I saw a chap at his old Land-Rover in the street. As I do, I said have you been across the Gunbarrel Highway?

He had, and was the LandRover we heard revving in the night in the mud North of Giles Creek where we were stuck in our #KombSplity with the Gunbarrel Tours Landcruiser party in 1968 !! see here flic.kr/p/977Yuh

And the Bob Collard mob we were following.

flic.kr/p/xfn3ay

So we connected, and took them canoeing!!!

We returned to Point Hut, above, and canoed with the kids and all down to Pine Is.. Took several photos with the Pentax, C41 or slides, to check..

"Few cries, and Kate wanted to get out, but we convinced them it was fun! Mary enjoyed it too."

2:30 to 3:30 we had lunch at Pine Is.

We then paddled down 300ft from here then met a kayaker who said it was a bit rough from here on. (We found that a many years later with ACE when we Li-loed to the Red Rocks Gorge)

So we stayed back around the pool near Pine Is. and looked for Larry's pants with his car and house keys, which sank when he rolled his canoe!

We then drove some canoes to Kambah Pool and returned cars to Pine Is where Mary was not enjoying Sandhy's Co. and we had tea there till about 8pm. Then took Larry home while the kids slept in the back of the HJ, got his spare keys and returned to Kambah Pool for his car...

Got home after 9pm and put the kids to bed...

We camped upstream here with Fletchers, Cromptons, Ross Andrews and Jane, slept on ground , no foam... Nov 18 1977

Echoes in Ash and Ink: A Tapestry of Memory Woven Through a Single Photograph

A chance discovery, nestled amongst forgotten relics spared by the devastating 2003 fires, has yielded more than just a faded image. This aerial oblique view of a road crossing, captured on what might have been a Hasselblad loaded with C-41 or E6 120 film and now resurrected through a 600dpi scan on a Canon flatbed, serves as a potent portal into a rich personal history, a tangible link to moments etched in time and the landscape itself. More than a mere depiction of asphalt meeting earth, this print is a catalyst for a cascade of memories, weaving together family, friendship, and the enduring connection to a beloved place.

The immediate context provided by the accompanying notes paints a vivid picture beyond the static frame. The gentle curve of the river, the unseen vantage point behind the camera to the left, become stages for past joys. The simple statement, "We even camped up stream, (behind the camera to the left), at the next bend with Malcolm, The Fletchers, stayed for BBQ, Ross Andrews, and Jane and our kids one night years ago," conjures an image of laughter echoing through the trees, the aroma of grilled food mingling with the crisp air. This fleeting moment is then anchored to a specific date, "diary 18th Nov. 1977," lending a concrete reality to the nostalgic recollection. The landscape itself becomes a witness to repeated gatherings, the "old shelter shed" on the east bank a silent testament to "Several BBQs and picnics" enjoyed on that very spot.

The river, a constant presence in the frame, further deepens the connection to this place. The casual mention of having "li-loed just upstream from the concrete ford a few times in summer" speaks of carefree days, the cool water offering respite from the Australian heat. This personal intimacy with the location extends beyond casual visits, revealing a history of shared adventures. The detailed account of a canoe trip on "Sun 11th Mar 1973" underscores this. The logistical planning, the involvement of friends – John and Elizabeth Wood, the Walters, Terry and Sandy Hunt, John Hicks and partner, Larry Cornell and Suellen, all accompanied by children and the anticipation of a picnic at Pine Island – transforms the road crossing into a point of departure and return for shared experiences. Even the seemingly mundane act of collecting canoes the night before, punctuated by a familial debate about a potential house purchase, adds layers of personal significance to the location.

The narrative then takes an unexpected turn, revealing the intricate web of human connection that this place has fostered. The anecdote about sleeping past a bus stop and a chance encounter with a fellow traveler highlights the serendipitous nature of shared experiences. The recognition of a Land Rover, a vehicle encountered years prior during a challenging outback adventure on the Gunbarrel Highway, underscores the enduring power of memory and the unexpected ways in which seemingly disparate moments can be linked. The reference to "our #KombSplity with the Gunbarrel Tours Landcruiser party in 1968" and the mention of the "Bob Collard mob" further enriches the narrative, hinting at a history of exploration and camaraderie.

The final affirmation, "Just chatted about this with Mary. She has such a good memory. She remembers who the Walters are!!!" brings the narrative full circle, emphasizing the shared history and the vital role of memory in preserving these connections. The photograph, therefore, is not just a static image but a trigger for a vibrant tapestry of personal and communal experiences. It is a testament to the enduring power of place, the significance of shared moments, and the intricate threads of memory that bind us to our past. This aerial oblique of a simple road crossing, rescued from the threat of oblivion, now stands as a powerful reminder of the lives lived, the friendships forged, and the stories etched into the very fabric of the landscape.

Heading down to the Tuglow River from Boss Mtn. near Gillespie Lookout

C:\Users\Bill Crowle\Pictures\Other Pictures\Photo Albums\1979\ IMG_3942 Lighthouse Jervis Bay 3624pxwide

copied Dec 3, 2011 Date and Time (Digitized) - 2011:12:03 12:05:16

The ruin of Cape St George Lighthouse is perhaps the most significant European site in the park. Nowadays, the lighthouse is the best place to watch the whale migration and return. You can learn about whale-watching here.

Designed by the colonial architect, Alexander Dawson and built in 1860, the 3 storey lighthouse was built of sandstone blocks quarried near the present day Jervis Bay village. The tower was 61 feet high (18.5m) with 8 rooms at ground level. The floor was timber and cast iron girders held up a roof of stone flagging covered with asphalt.

Getting supplies to the lighthouse was always difficult with the nearest landing place over 4 kilometres away at Murrays Beach. Horses were needed for transporting mail and supplies, and taking the children to and from school. Keeping a horse permanently was not easy as there was a shortage of grass

for feed. However goats were better suited to the terrain and were kept for milking, some meat for consumption and bait for catching sharks.

From 1860 to 1877 up to 15 people including the lighthouse keeper, 2 under-keepers and their families lived in this 8 room complex. Oil and supplies for the lighthouse were also stored here so conditions would have been relatively cramped and uncomfortable. In 1877 a 7-room weatherboard cottage was built for the head keeper near the stables.

The kitchen and laundry building was probably erected around 1865 as ‘a store for the men’s provisions, a wash house and an oven, with a boiling copper for the establishment’. It provided much needed space as previously everything, including living quarters for the three lightkeeper’s families, had been housed in the original lighthouse building.

The double latrine (toilet) building drains directly out and over the nearby cliff face, and is an excellent example of the strict attention to sanitation that was required in such a remote location. It is likely that it was divided into male and female sections.

ACE Bunglers - Information for Travellers

Mary Crowle

19 June 1998

I phoned Vawn Roberts, of Gunbarrel Tours, and also spoke to Steve Webster, our driver, and elicited from them the following information. There are some points which will need individual input - asap please.

1.Tents

These are four man external framed tents approximately 3m by 3m, with full standing height, and will be either lightweight nylon or canvas, depending on demand from other tours at the time. Gunbarrel have tours to all sorts of places, under varying weather conditions, and, for example, wet southwest trips will have priority over dry northern trips for stormproof gear. We will occupy tents on a twin share basis, but we will probably want to sleep out a lot.

2.Mattresses

These are 25-30mm dense foam (not flat mats) and we will have at least one each. Depending on demand from other trips, Vawn expects that we could have two, or even three.

3.Chairs

The ones supplied are backless armless camp stools. If you don’t think you can put up with these for the whole trip, you may wish to bring your own. There was a suggestion that we ask Vawn to purchase on our behalf a number of cheap moulded plastic stackable chairs suitable for roof transport, but the first three travellers consulted had problems with the idea, so it’s BYO please.

Please note that chairs or stools with legs tend to dig themselves into the ground, and that horizontal bars at ground level are a better bet, avoiding the need for the campfire shuffle. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, ask me. And if you think you can make it without back support, remember that there are about 18 breakfasts, 18 lunches, 18 dinners, 18 campfires, and 18 Travellers all vying for the comfy spots on the logs and in the shade.

4.Luggage

Space shouldn’t be a huge problem, but be sensible. Soft overnight bags, duffle bags and packs are preferred - luggage will be dumped in the back of the bus or thrown on the roof and tied down, and anything that won’t tolerate rough handling is inappropriate. Note also that everything will end up dusty, even with careful dustproofing - it’s The Dry, and the colour is outback red.

5.Clothing and Bedding

Vawn’s comment was that he wouldn’t expect it to be over-the-top hot or cold. Our notion of what to expect weatherwise appears reasonable. He predicts that we will end up in T-shirts, shorts and boots, everyone does. Don’t forget your bathers. Vawn didn’t say much when I told him about the silver headgear - responded with dead silence in fact. He did say that he had hoped to be able to come with us, but it looked like he’d be tied up after all.

6.Water

The bus will carry drinking water only in an easy access 70L water tank on the back, which will be replenished along the way. Water for washing, bathing and laundry will be as available at camp sites and en route, and will depend on our itinerary. Take deodorant.

7.Toilets

Attempts to organise bush latrines on previous trips have proved pretty unsatisfactory, and no formal arrangements will be made unless we want them. We are expected to be very Green in these sensitive environments. Toilet paper is not supplied apart from a small emergency stock - please remember to pack your own. Jeanette Dunkley worked out that 7 people use one roll per day on trips. The bus carries a couple of spades for de-bogging which are also available for bogging. Or take a trowel.

8.Insects

These may or may not be a problem. We won’t know until we get there, and areas will vary. Take repellant - preferably not sprays.

9.Battery Recharging

Vawn said he would fit a 12v cigarette-lighter socket in the bus for us so that we can recharge batteries while we’re on the move. The bus also has a 240v generator to power the refrigerators etc, and we will be able to recharge from that when it’s running.

10.Boat Trips and Helicopter Flights

Our two free boat trips should be booked as soon as possible - we should let Vawn know where and how many, and he will make the bookings. I told him I thought El Questro and Geikie Gorge, not Lake Argyle, and that there would be 17 takers at each. If I am wrong let me know soon.

Helicopter flights will be able to be booked closer to the time - Steve can phone ahead a day or so and reserve them. Vawn suggested Hall’s Creek as the best place to go from. The cost should be somewhere in the order of $120 per passenger, and he wouldn’t expect any discounts to be available. The Kimberley isn’t a prime Asian tourist destination, but they’ve had a ninety per cent decrease in the number of Asians touring.

11.Medical

The bus carries a fully equipped first aid kit, Steve is a trained paramedic, we will have radio access to the flying doctor, and Steve has a mobile phone. Take personal medications - don’t rely on local pharmaceutical supplies.

12.Food and Drinks

The Kimberly is not a cheap supermarket or grog shop area. All non-perishable goods are brought up in the bus from Perth, and perishables are resupplied en route. A friend of Jillian’s, who worked on Kimberly safari tours for several months recently, says the food on these trips is generally really good, and we shouldn’t worry. The bus carries a freezer and refrigeration for food and drinks.

I have told Vawn that I don’t think we have any food allergy problems, apart from John May and cheese. If I’m wrong please let me know straight away so I can get the message through before the shopping’s done.

All milk on the trip will be UHT purchased in and transported from Perth, and some of us may wish to substitute skim milk or modified milk for the full cream milk Vawn would normally supply. If you want to register a preference please let me know straight away. Note that if you order skim milk you are committing yourself to drinking it for the whole trip.

The bread will be mainly white after the Perth stock is exhausted - apparently there’s not a lot of wholemeal in the northwest. I have suggested that most of the Perth bread should be wholemeal - if you have any objections please let me know.

Tom has the booze pretty well sorted and will need funding soon. If you think he’s been generous with quantities, Vawn assures us that we will be happier oversupplied than undersupplied, and touring’s thirsty work.

13.Camp Chores

Steve expects help. And he’s looking forward to the trip!

We both sung these at school, studied them in Bible class and Divinity lessons....

I remember walking up Sydney road in the afternoons to Sunday school, getting prizes for attendance , going to Church and Sunday school on our bikes, without our parents, like there was nothing else to do in the afternoons or mornings.

Now there are so many other interests for kids to do, texting their friends, snowboarding and skateboard parks, walking in National Parks, doing school assignments and working part-time in shops and malls..

For some there is still the bike riding and sailing, horse riding and music lessons, and religion comes way down the list of things one wants or needs to do!

Having just returned from across the world, and the places and people we have met, we can be reassured we are not part of that "dark patch on the earth", but have lifted "up mine eyes unto the hills,"....

When we lived in Willoughby, and I was sent to Sunday School every Sunday afternoon. I was awarded a book prize for attendance!

I wrote the address, 212 "Glen Norric" BH Rd, in the front, and our phone number was JJ4369.

We moved there in 1953!

Sent from Bill's iPad.

We have the 50s Doll. The 60s doll was seen at Jane's….see below…. All enjoyed by the Grandchildren..

Who was first to sign the 80’s doll..?

Where the "Walter Hood" was wrecked in April 1870, see the Offbeat Australia book p382.

and from an email of mine..

Went into a beaut secondhand bookshop in Canberra today, and saw a book on display, and thought you might be interested!

It's called

Fast Company: The Lively Times and Untimely End of the Clipper Ship Walter Hood 1852-1870.

Author: G A Mawer Pub: Plainwords Press 20 Millen St Hughes ACT 2605 Published 1994

Printed in Australia by Fast Books, a division of Wild and Wolley P/L Glebe.

The dedication is For the crew of the Pastiche Towers, high and dry a mile south of the Walter Hood whatever that means. :-)

The Walter Hood is presumably the Berwherre Beach wreck you discovered, although a quick perusal of your original emails hasn't turned up a name for the wreck. From my brief delve into the book its description of the position of the wreck and your find would appear to coincide.

If the wreck is the Walter Hood, it was a big, wellknown and impressive clipper.
