Speedway races take place on a flat, oval track with a subsoil of calcareous sandstone. According to the official definition, this is a "surface of granite, slate, brick granules or similar unbound material on a subsoil of solid earth". Racers lay their machines sideways into corners (known as powersliding), with the rear wheels "kicking out" to steer them around corners with the front wheels. When cornering, riders brace themselves with their left leg to maintain balance. During this process, the foot is usually protected by a steel sliding shoe (steel shoe).
In a speedway race, four or six riders start at the same time in a standing start. Their bikes must weigh at least 80 kg, have no brakes and only one gear. The engines are 500 cc single-cylinder four-strokes with methanol as fuel. Speeds of up to 130 km/h are reached on the straights.
A race over four laps takes about one minute with a track length of 300 to 400 meters.

My goal with this series is to explore every day scenes under the cover of darkness. A street corner, a lamp post, a doorway. Big city, small town, urban, rural. Man-made light versus nature’s darkness–––light and shadow interpreting minimalist settings in black and white. To see more in this series, check out Cover Of Darkness
Early on in the COVER OF NIGHT series, I shot a couple gas stations. They were not initially the type scene I was looking to capture, but when I came across one late at night, bright and isolated in the darkness, it was impossible for me to resist, so I continue to shoot them. I have now shot enough that they have become a series-within-the-series. For a look at them as a collection, check out, Gas Stations
Coal loads for Alma, WI fly along the Mississippi River at 55 mph in a 3 x 1 configuration here at Sauk Rapids. Nary an EMD to be found in this consist, imagine that.
‘Grey’ (Barclay No.1994 of 1931) was supplied to the Durham County Water Board to work on the construction of Burnhope Reservoir in the early 1930s.
At the end of construction it was sold on in 1938 for further use on the Penrhyn Quarry Railway system in North Wales where it acquired the name 'Glyder’
After falling out of use at Penrhyn It was exported, along with a number of other former Penrhyn locomotives, to the USA. After arrival in the US the locomotive was purchased at auction by Tony Hulman (the then owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway home of the Indy 500).
After many years of storage in 2012 a deal was done to see the return of Glyder (along with two other narrow gauge locomotives), finally returning to the UK after years in storage.
Although never a colliery engine Glyder/Grey' isn't far from it's first home, and certainly looks the part shunting around the colliery village in the summer sunshine.

In the era of PTC sometimes you just have to include those ugly antennas in your shot and cut off the top of them. A stack train bound for Atlanta wastes no time zipping by the control point at East Brandon.
Back in the 1970s you could find me at the Jackson International Speedway every Saturday Night. JIS was a ½ Mile asphalt oval track located just West of Clinton Mississippi.
Every Saturday night there were three or more divisions of racing;
Late Model - Racing Cars Built from Scratch
Hobby/Road Runner - Stock Cars built into Race Cars.
Mini Stock - Volkswaggon size cars.
Supermodified - Open wheel Sprint Cars.
Drivers such as "Jay Gonzolez, Freddy Fryer and Donald Watson" as well as other local drivers would compete.
JIS's heyday was the 1970s. As the early 80s took place, the asphalt pavement began to need repair. Cost of the racing equipment became expensive as the years went by. Drivers began to compete more at other tracks.
The final race at JIS came unexpectedly when several competitors walked out due to the damage to their race cars. The damage came from an asphalt track which needed repair badly. The cost of repairs far exceeded what a track owner could recover so the track went out of business.
Shown in this photo is turn 4. This was the final turn before the Start/Finish line.
