A start to another great day at Watkins Glen for the 2019 U.S. Vintage Grand Prix. Lots of dew and sunshine on my buddy's beautiful Datsun 240Z, after resting under the stars all night.

I photographed these beautiful flowers a few days ago at the home of some friends who are serious rose growers. These roses are called "Sparkle and Shine".

Lighting stuff: This was a simple one light setup with a Yongnuo manual flash in an 8.6 inch Lastolite soft box hand held at camera left. Fill light is from a mirror hand held at camera right. The flash and my tripod mounted camera were triggered with a Yongnuo RF-603N.

During the break in the rain, we quickly drove to one of my favorite spots so I could get a last shot there. By then the light was almost gone, but there were generous piles of bougainvillea petals in the puddles.

My husband has already had to return to PR on business. He called me from this bridge the other evening. :)

I've been holding off on this for a while. But when I saw michel's today, I thought maybe the time was ripe.

Christmas is not my holiday. But when you grow up in the U.S. (and many other places too, I'm sure) Christmas, and it's attendant trappings, pretty much pervades the popular culture the last few months of the year.

I remember resenting the fact we couldn't have decorations when I was a kid. Somewhere along the line I came to understand the nuances . . . it was perfectly fine to help our friends decorate their trees, or take a look at the lights at the house on Fitzwaterton Road where they put up a display to rival Disney, or tour the Christmas windows on 5th Avenue, but "no" to lights of our own.

And a bit later I came to realize what a gift it is, to be able to just sit back and enjoy the effort of so many to make this dark, cold time of year absolutely sparkling, shiny and beautiful without feeling obliged to do any of it myself.

so we went down to the creek

and in the dappled light she improvised a performance for one

it was so much fun for us both

and then I picked up where I left off

cooking a seder

and she went on to the rest of her day of shuttling kids around

Just there it was, right before my eyes, a shimmer and a sparkle, a light vibrating in the air. A bokeh shower all around me. I sat down on the wet road for a while, just looking at the world through my lens. Sensing the time stop.

75 and sunny when the fog rolled away. a sneaker wave caught one right in the face and all down her front, then she fell trying to get away. thankfully she has a good friend willing to let her raid her dresser. a surprise hug caught me from behind, joined with words from the greatest mom ever category. a fairly seamless day was made even better. 75 and sunny when the fog rolled away.

I love how it turned out... I really do.

Watercoloured roses -using my aqua crayons. Used a pale blue Copic to go round the edge. Cut with a Lil' Inkers die. Inspired by the photo at Sparkle and Shine. The sequins are a mixture of some Pretty Pink Posh and some I had in my stash. Die cut sentiment from Winnie & Walter.
