Despite his lack of practical farm expertise, William Johnston (1848-1885) was the "founder" of the Ontario Agricultural College and its Principal from 1876-1879. It was his vision that led to the creation of a three-year degree program, affiliated with the University of Toronto, which began in 1887 and continued until 1964. Johnston Hall, built in 1932 as a student residence and administrative offices, is now one of the University's most recognized buildings.

Johnston Hall's stone tower is the University of Guelph's best-known landmark, and its spacious front lawn one of the most loved spots on campus. Administrative offices fill the lower floor, while 315 students live on the top three floors in large double and triple rooms. Built in 1932, Johnston Hall's traditional architecture and its spacious tower lounge make it a favorite with many students.

Manorbier beach, part of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, in Pembrokeshire, South Wales.

With its magnificent clifftop castle and historic Norman church, Manorbier has much to offer tourists with an interest in the past as well as visitors who love the seaside. Facing south-west and sheltered by the protective jut of Priest’s Nose head, the beach is sandy and spacious and popular both for family use and, when the sea state is suitable, for surfing.

Fossils can be found along the stream bed, although some are of poor quality, and along the cliffs to the side of the beach the rock formations are revealed as vertical beds. The evidence of early human habitation consists of many flint microliths, housed in museums around the area, from the Mesolithic and Neolithic ages. The King's Quoit cromlech is the most notable monument in the local area and is to be found to the south east of Manorbier bay and beach.

Later evidence points to occupation of The Dak with the finding of a perforated mace head as well as Bronze age burial mounds on the Ridgeway. Fortifications also seem to have been prominent including an Iron Age enclosure near Manorbier station and the site of a multivallate, meaning multiple ditches, promontory fort at Old Castle Head where there are remains of hut platforms within the ditches. A well-restored lime kiln is in Mud Lane behind the castle. To the east of Manorbier, on the side of the road to Lydstep, is an area of strip lynchets dating to early Anglo Saxon times and perhaps as early as the Bronze Age.

The Norman knight Odo de Barri was granted the lands of Manorbier, Penally and Begelly in gratitude for his military help in conquering Pembrokeshire after 1103. The first Manorbier Castle was motte and bailey style, with the stone walls being added in the next century by later Normans. Giraldus Cambrensis, son of William de Barri, was born in the village in 1146, and called it "the pleasantest place in Wales".

This bright and spacious basilica consists of a single four-bay nave with cross-vaulted ceiling bordered with patterns of crosses and leaves, a transept and a polygonal apse. The four ribbed vaults are decorated alternately with golden stars on a blue background and paintings. The second vault is decorated with roundels with busts of Christ facing Saint Francis and the Virgin facing Saint John the Baptist. The entrance vault gives us the Four Latin Doctors of the Church: St Gregory facing St. Jerome and Saint Ambrose facing St. Augustine. These are ascribed to the Isaac Master.

The choir has 102 wooden stalls with carvings and marquetry by Domenico Indovini (1501). In their centre, on a raised platform, stands the papal cathedra.

The west end of the transept and the apse have been decorated with many frescoes by Cimabue and his workshop (starting in c. 1280). The magnificent Crucifixion, with Saint Francis on his knees at the foot of the Cross, stresses again the veneration of the Passion of Christ by Saint Francis. The frescoes of Cimabue soon suffered from damp and decay. Due to the use of lead oxide in his colours and to the fact that the colours were applied when the plaster was no longer fresh, they have deteriorated and have been reduced to photographic negatives.

Prior to him there had been some decorations in the upper right hand section of the transept by an (anonymous) Northern Master, probably an English artist (1267–1270). He realized the two lunettes and the roundels on the west wall with paintings of the Angel and the Apostles. Another (anonymous) master, the Roman Master, painted the Isaiah and the David and the remainder of the wall under the eastern lunette.

The upper part on both sides of the nave, badly damaged by the earthquake of 1997, was decorated in two rows with in total 32 scenes from the Old Testament (starting with Creation of the World and ending with Joseph forgives his brothers) and the New Testament (from the Annunciation to The Women at the Tomb), while the upper register of the entrance wall is covered with two frescoes Pentecost and Ascension of Jesus. Since it took about six months to paint one bay of the nave, different Roman and Tuscan masters, followers of Cimabue, have performed this series of scenes such as Giacomo, Jacopo Torriti and Pietro Cavallini.

The two frescoes of the life of Isaac (Isaac blesses Jacob and Esau in front of Isaac) in the middle register of the third bay, are traditionally ascribed to the young Giotto (1290–1295) (previously wrongly ascribed to Cimabue by Vasari). But even this has been controversial. Many critics esteem these the work of the anonymous Isaac Master and his workshop. Deducing from stylistic details, attesting to his Roman background, some think that the Isaac Master may have been Pietro Cavallini or a follower. Pietro Cavallini had painted around 1290 a similar fresco Isaac blessing Jacob in the convent of the church Santa Cecilia in Trastevere in Rome. The position of the resting Isaac looks like the same position of the Virgin in Cavallini's mosaic Birth of the Virgin in the apse of the church Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome. The Isaac Master is considered one of the first practitioners of the true fresco (buon fresco) technique, which revolutionized mural painting for the subsequent centuries.

Saint Francis preaches in the presence of pope Honorius III

But the most important decorations are the series of 28 frescoes ascribed to the young Giotto along the lower part of the nave. Each bay contains three frescoes above the dado on each side of the nave, two frescoes in the east galleries beside the entrance, and two more on the entrance wall. Giotto used the Legenda Maior, the biography of Saint Francis by Saint Bonaventure (1266) to reconstruct the major events in the life of Saint Francis. The prototype for this cycle may have been the (now lost) Saint Francis cycle by Pietro Cavallini in the church San Francesco a Ripa in Rome. The paintings are as vivid as if Giotto had been a witness to these events. According to Vasari, they were executed in the period between 1296 and 1304.

However the authorship of Giotto is disputed, due to the ambiguous attributions given in early descriptions of this work. Many Italian critics continue to support the authorship of Giotto and his workshop. But because of small differences in style with the frescoes of Isaac, it is thought that several or even all of these frescoes were painted by at least three separate painters, using the original concept of Giotto : the Master of Legend of Saint Francis (the principal painter and probable supervisor of the cycle), the Master of the Obsequies of Saint Francis and the Cecilia Master.

The first span of the ceiling is decorated with frescoes of the "Four Doctors of the Church“ ( Jerome, Augustine, Gregory and Ambrose), attributed either to a young Giotto or to one of his followers. The third span presents four heart-shaped medallions of the Christ, Mary, John the Baptist and Francis, painted by Jacopo Torriti.

The cuspidate façade of the upper basilica has a portal in Gothic style with twin doors and a beautiful rose window.

"The Gößweinstein Basilica is a minor basilica in the municipality of Gößweinstein. The basilica is the second largest pilgrimage site in the Archdiocese of Bamberg and at the same time the largest Trinity pilgrimage site in Germany. Every year around 140 permanent pilgrimage groups make a pilgrimage to Gößweinstein. Gößweinstein is considered the spiritual and ecclesiastical center of Franconian Switzerland.

In 1071 there was said to have been a chapel on the site of the basilica. In 1240, Konrad I of Schluesselberg and his wife Kunigunde converted the chapel into a spacious church that was consecrated in honor of the Most Holy Trinity. The earliest mention of a church in Gozwinstein is in 1308 in the will of Gottfried von Schlüsselberg. The Schlüsselberger family is seen as the founders of the first church; She also founded the Cistercian monastery in Schlüsselau, which is also dedicated to the Holy Trinity.

In 1461 Gößweinstein became independent. Previously it was incorporated into the Archdeaconry of Hollfeld. Support from noble families can be seen early on, such as those from Groß zu Trockau. The first indulgences were granted to the church in 1511. At that time, the days marked with indulgences did not yet include what later became the main pilgrimage day of Trinity, the Sunday after Pentecost.

The medieval church was soon no longer able to cope with the onslaught of pilgrims. It was expanded by around three meters in 1593 and 1594; this extension was not sufficient. “There seemed to have been such a crowd in the church that in around 1624 it was reported that the pilgrims had knocked over the baptismal font, and in 1719 that the clergy had backed away from the mass of believers when distributing communion 'because of the narrowness of the altars'" To counteract the lack of space, the Lady Chapel was built in 1630, next to it an open wooden chapel. Confessionals and a sermon chair also had to be set up outdoors.

A new building seemed urgently necessary; In 1683, hopeful signals came from the Bamberg bishop, which suggested that this could begin shortly. In the same year, Margaretha Gerstackerin from Allersdorf donated “20 fl. for the building of the church”. Construction began after long negotiations; The foundation stone was laid on June 3, 1730. In the previous decades, the Gößweinstein pastors had repeatedly asked Bamberg for permission to begin construction. It was thanks in particular to Pastor Dippold's persistence that construction was not delayed any further. In a letter, Dippold asked the building-loving Bamberg Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn, “in addition to his splendid secular buildings, the prince should also build a magnificent temple in honor of St. "Build the Trinity." There were plans from various builders, including one from the court architect Leonhard Dientzenhofer from 1715, which envisaged a central domed building with three towers and nine chapels, based on the Trinity patronage. This plan was rejected by the authorities as too expensive.

After the death of Lothar Franz von Schönborn in 1729 and the election of his nephew Friedrich Carl von Schönborn, the commission was given to the famous Balthasar Neumann (1687–1753), whose plan was also carried out. At first work was carried out under his direction, later under the direction of Johann Jakob Michael Küchenl, who had been Neumann's employee in the prince-bishop's building office in the Bishopric of Bamberg since 1735. At the consecration of the church in 1739, which took place in the presence of the prince-bishop, the construction was far from finished. Even the high altar and pulpit were not yet finished, the other altars had not even been started.

The work on the furnishings lasted until after 1769 (this year the construction protocols from Pastor Adam Peter Vogl end). The devastating fire of 1746, which severely damaged the church, the rectory, the Kirchnerhaus, the schoolhouse and around 60 town houses, was a bitter setback - both in terms of time and finances. Because of the necessary repairs, the church equipment had to be put on hold. Repairing the fire damage cost the Gößweinstein parish around 12,000 guilders (fl.) - not including the parish, church building and school building. The construction costs before the fire amounted to over 70,300 fl. Financing posed a major problem for the church, which had previously had a large fortune. Pastor Vogl complained in 1748 that the church “did not manage to generate 30 fl in cash at the time, and I find that to be bad “Build where there is no money.”

Gößweinstein is a municipality in the district of Forchheim in Bavaria in Germany. It lies within the region known as Franconian Switzerland.

The first record of Goswinesteyn Castle is from 1076. Prior to 1102 the Hochstift Bamberg became the owner of the castle. The prince-bishop of Bamberg Friedrich Carl von Schönborn (ruled from 1729 until 1746) elevated Gößweinstein's status to a Market. During the Secularization in 1803, the area of the Hochstift Bamberg was transferred to Bavaria. During the Bavarian territorial reforms in 1978, the formerly independent communities of Morschreuth, Wichsenstein, Behringersmühle, Kleingesee, Leutzdorf, Stadelhofen, Unterailsfeld and part of the community Tüchersfeld were integrated into Gößweinstein.

Upper Franconia (German: Oberfranken) is a Regierungsbezirk (administrative [Regierungs] region [bezirk]) of the state of Bavaria, southern Germany. It forms part of the historically significant region of Franconia, the others being Middle Franconia and Lower Franconia, which are all now part of the German Federal State of Bayern (Bavaria).

With more than 200 independent breweries which brew approximately 1000 different types of beer, Upper Franconia has the world's highest brewery-density per capita. A special Franconian beer route (Fränkische Brauereistraße) runs through many popular breweries.

The administrative region borders on Thuringia (Thüringen) to the north, Lower Franconia (Unterfranken) to the west, Middle Franconia (Mittelfranken) to the south-west, and Upper Palatinate (Oberpfalz) to the south-east, Saxony (Sachsen) to the north-east and the Czech Republic to the east.

After the founding of the Kingdom of Bavaria the state was totally reorganized and, in 1808, divided into 15 administrative government regions (German: Regierungsbezirke (singular Regierungsbezirk)), in Bavaria called Kreise (singular: Kreis). They were created in the fashion of the French departements, quite even in size and population, and named after their main rivers.

In the following years, due to territorial changes (e. g. loss of Tyrol, addition of the Palatinate), the number of Kreise was reduced to 8. One of these was the Mainkreis (Main District). In 1837 king Ludwig I of Bavaria renamed the Kreise after historical territorial names and tribes of the area. This also involved some border changes or territorial swaps. Thus the name Mainkreis changed to Upper Franconia.

Next to the former episcopal residence city of Bamberg, the capital Bayreuth, the former residence city of Coburg and the classicist centre of Hof, as well as the towns of Lichtenfels, Kronach, Gößweinstein and Kulmbach, the Weißenstein Palace, Banz Abbey and the Basilica of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, the scenic attractions of the River Main and the low mountain ranges of the Fichtel Mountains with the town of Wunsiedel and the Franconian Forest belong among the region's major tourist attractions. There are also numerous spas like Bad Rodach, Bad Steben, Bad Staffelstein, Bad Berneck and Bad Alexandersbad." - info from Wikipedia.

Museum Arnhem NL

This museum for modern, contemporary and applied art and design in Arnhem, was renovated and expanded. Benthem Crouwel Architects’ clear and simple design concept involved restoring Cornelis Outshoorn’s 1873 design in all its former glory. The design highlights the museum’s unique location and the building’s characteristic qualities: the landscape plays a key role in the museum experience; the galleries are simple and quiet, creating optimal conditions for enjoying the works of art; and the dome regains its original, spacious character. The renovation and extension of Museum Arnhem seamlessly integrates art and nature.

A new volume was added on the west side. It provides views of, and connects with the landscape in a variety of ways: the lateral moraine with its vegetation, the gardens with their sculptures, panoramic vistas of the Rhine and the Betuwe, the view of Oosterbeek railway bridge, and not to mention Arnhem’s grand skyline. This wing has a unique feature: a public amphitheater with a large tribune, which makes it possible for visitors without a museum ticket to enjoy the views and the garden. The new wing extends on both sides, and is clearly visible from both roads approaching the museum. The part that protrudes on the south side, above the moraine, accentuates the differences in height: looking out over the landscape, visitors feel like they are hovering above the trees.

Last night I finally I got an image that matches my feelings when I go for a walk through the tallgrass prairie this time of year. I just needed some good clouds to go with it.... This is a good one to look at in the large size on black in slideshow.

I used a two-stop split neutral density filter to hold back the sky exposure here. This was the only good shot I got at this spot -- a moment earlier the foreground was in shade and much too dark and a moment later the lens flare exploded everywhere.

You'll never guess what happened next. Ok, maybe with a sky like this you might guess the sunset was really good again. It was! Maybe we do have a monopoly on all the good sunsets here... *smile*

I cloned out some flare and a radio tower on this one.

The Great Mosque of Sousse, built in 851 during the Aghlabid dynasty, is a significant example of early Islamic architecture. Its rectangular floor plan includes a spacious courtyard and a prayer hall with 13 naves separated by horseshoe arches. The prayer hall features a central dome in front of the mihrab, a distinctive element in early Islamic mosque design. Uniquely, the mosque lacks a minaret; instead, the adjacent Ribat fortress tower serves for the call to prayer. The mosque's austere design reflects its dual role as a place of worship and a defensive structure, with crenellated walls and corner towers. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site encompassing the Medina of Sousse.

Sousse or Soussa is a city in eastern Tunisia, on the Mediterranean Sea.

Founded by the Phoenicians in the 11th century BC, the city was named Hadrumetum. In later centuries, it was known by various other names, such as Hunerikopolis and Justinianopolis. During the great Arab conquests of the 7th century AD, the city was renamed Soussa.

Artistic Architecture: Stark Spacious Soaring Stylish Structures, Hyatt Regency Atlanta Georgia - IMRAN®

There’s a commanding presence in the stark yet spacious atrium of the Hyatt Regency Atlanta—a testament to architectural ambition. The soaring lines and expansive openness create a captivating interplay of space and structure.

While some photography magazines might suggest cropping out the empty floor at the bottom, I chose to leave it intact, allowing the composition to breathe and offering a richer sense of scale and perspective.

I captured this moment in my stay there in late December, 2024.
