Electric Fields and The How Weird Street Festival were both outdoor festivals that were scheduled for the same day: May 4th, 2024. How Weird even had an entire May The 4th Be With You Star Wars theme built around this year’s event and had to cancel/postpone 2 days beforehand because of an incoming storm.
The musical part of Electric Fields was scheduled from 1PM-6PM and some reports had the rain stopping by noon so Electric Fields committed the party as a Go.
The storm that day was pretty brutal, I drove past 3 accidents that morning and when I rolled into The Bandshell shortly after noon (“First!”) it was still very much raining with no end in sight and the mad men of Monarch & The Great Northern were still moving forward with setting up. The first song that they played during a light drizzle was a remix of Blind Melon’s “No Rain” which was both perfect and hilarious.
The rain eventually stopped, blue skies took over, people started to show up, a house foundation was being built on the dancefloor, and as the party started to fill up a decision was made to remove the shade structure over the DJ booth, which was a great idea up until the point that it started to rain again during Galen’s set. Fun with House Music in The Great Outdoors. But Galen just kept on spinning, the dancers up front put on their jackets and kept dancing in the rain, and the party continued on till the shade structure managed to find its way back to the party. It was one of those The Rave vs The Elements moments that you might see at Burning Man, where the story could go either way, but The Rave stood her ground and was still standing after the rain passed. It’s always cool to be a part of those kind of stories.
Then at the end of Doc Martin’s set the music stopped at exactly 6PM because Golden Gate Park, but Doc got a surprise extra 30 minutes and then a +1 More Last Song after that which is something that just doesn’t happen all the time in Golden Gate Park.
A really unique day and a story of disco perseverance in a really magical part of San Francisco with a lot of history.
