A random picture of a random sight on my way home. Early in the morning, nothing happens, nothing disturbs the frozen cold. The clear view into some bushes outside is nowhere to shine. But it is calm and quiet to look on.

I am happy that I managed to make the sofa behave a little strange, but most of all that the shoes bleed a little into the floor. More of that I hope.

and still so far behind...

Tonight's temps are going to be between too cold and too effing cold... wanted a warm scene to offset that a bit, but the brain couldn't rationalize too warm a scene with the temps being what they are. This was the compromise :)

The fall colors were pretty brief here, the storms taking away the leaves before they had a chance to come to full color. I haven't had much chance this year to get out for pictures either, but I'm hoping I might yet find some more hidden color around anyway

D200's extended Indian Summer 1985-1988

Apart from working the Carlisle-Leeds 1E23/1M72 service on a regular basis, D200 alias 40122 hauled numerous railtours during its extended reprieve.

D200 / 40122 seen arrived at Paddington on the Christmas Cracker IV in 1985. The contrasting look of the 1950s designed Class 40, and 1960s Class 50. Only a month after the fabulous Penzance Fryer, D200 worked onto the GWR again - and to my old stamping ground of Paddington. Alongside is large logo Class 50 50045 'Achilles' - another fine English Electric machine, arrived from Oxford. A somewhat successful hand-held shot in low light 😎)

During the 1980s, I spent a lot of my time riding around the British Rail network, mainly chasing Class 40s and then Class 50s, but also seeing and riding behind a number of other classes.

I also made a few tape recordings at that time - many from the front window, some from the platform - using my trusty 'ghetto-blaster' or 'boom box' - and now these recordings can finally be heard 😍)

NOW on SoundCloud! Enjoy the sound of the English Electric Type 4 - for 20+ mins you can immerse yourself in reliving the experience of hanging out of a Mark 1 carriage window behind a classic diesel 😎

The recordings I made on the day were recorded onto a Maxell II metal tape and have lasted quite well over the last 40 years - some distortion when the loco is on full power, but atmospheric all the same!

The British Rail Class 40s were built by English Electric between 1958 and 1962. They were numbered D200-D399. Despite their initial success, by the time the last examples were entering service they were already being replaced on some top-level duties by more powerful locomotives. As they were slowly relegated from express passenger uses, the type found work on secondary passenger and freight services where they worked for many years. The final locomotives ended regular service in 1985. The locomotives were commonly known as "Whistlers" because of the distinctive noise made by their turbochargers.

British Railways originally ordered ten Class 40s, then known as "English Electric Type 4s", as evaluation prototypes. They were built at the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire. The first locomotive, D200, was delivered to Stratford on 14 March 1958. Following fitter and crew training, D200 made its passenger début on an express train from London Liverpool Street to Norwich on 18 April 1958. Five of the prototypes, Nos. D200, D202-D205, were trialled on similar services on the former Great Eastern routes, whilst the remaining five, Nos. D201, D206-D209, worked on Great Northern services on the East Coast Main Line.

Locomotive History

D445 entered service 19-Oct-68

Renumbered 50045 in 1974

Named 'Achilles' 12-Apr-78

Withdrawn 11-Dec-90

Cut up by Booth's of Rotherham in 2002 along with 50001, 50023, 50040. Preserved body shell saved at Barrow Hill.

“Achilles” was amongst a batch of nine locos sent to Booths scrapyard in Rotherham early in 1992 along with 50001, 50004, 50016, 50020, 50023, 50026, 50036 and 50040. All nine locos were part of a bid by Operation Collingwood - an engineering charity established in the early 1990s to enable young engineering apprentices to rebuild the locomotives - however, as the required funding was not forthcoming, Booths forced Operation Collingwood to choose the best five, with the others to be cut up. 50004, 50016, 50020 and 50036 were all cut up in the spring of 1992. The charity was wound up in 2002 and 50001, 50023, 50040 and 50045 met a similar fate. 50026 was the only one saved.

NEW: I'm now making music, JOIN ME ON SOUNDCLOUD!

The Douglas Collection a bespoke set of 90 Douglas DC-8s which have now arrived back from the scanning department :) There will also be a set of 79 DC-9s. Again, I hope that they will provide some enjoyment and nostalgia from a bygone age.

Here we have a shot of an unusual visitor to London Heathrow - in the form of Spantax DC-8-61 EC-DVB - seen here approaching the threshold of runway 27R on an Aer Lingus flight. According to Irish251 there was a strike by some Aer Lingus staff in the week 2nd-7th July, so a lot of capacity was hired in to maintain a basic schedule. Spantax DC-8 EC-CZE also operated several Aer Lingus services on different days. (See comments section below)

😎 *** New for 2023/4 - AUDIO MEMORIES OF THE 1980s - 'SOUND & VISION' ARCHIVES - EXTRACTED FROM MY VINTAGE AUDIO TAPES - NOW APPEARING ON SOUNDCLOUD!

You can hear this DC-8 - taken from my original tape recording here (check around 29mins in) soundcloud.com/sound-vision-10193594/aviation-archive-1 ***😎

N8763 c/n 46037 - Douglas DC-8-61 was delivered new to Eastern Airlines in Dec 1968, and flew with the airline for 14 years (although leased out to JAL and Capitol for some of the time) before being sold to Bankers Trust and stored at Marana, Arizona. However, in May 1983 the aircraft started a new lease of life with Overseas National Airlines (ONA). As with Eastern, the aircraft was sometimes leased out - this time to Saudia, National Airlines and Airlift International - all as N8763 before changing identity to EC-DVB with Spantax from Oct 1984 to Dec 1987. After return, the aircraft was sold to LAPSA (Paraguay) as ZP-CCR. After just four more years, the aircraft was withdrawn again - but survived to fly with Airborne Express as N853AX, converted to a freighter, from Feb 1995 to 2006, ending her days in storage before finally being broken up. One of the stretched DC-8s that escaped being re-engined with turbofans.

Taken with a Soviet made Zenith TTL camera and 300mm lens. From an original slide, scanned with minimal digital restoration.

On Top of My Dimension

A poem by Peter S. Quinn

I'm now standing on top of my dimension

And feeling dizzy thru the falling air

With all sorts of freshness in comprehension

Those in flying girdles from underground to here

Paper weighting thoughts of my ongoing dreams

Floating about in their rotating high flight

So my paper sheet the real thing now seems

What is this perception of its misguided light?

At digit skyscrapers I'm standing tall

In slippery slipper with a new vision

I might plunge in and take the heaping fall

Find those lost footsteps that once were precision

Come with me on my journey - to the end

Together we'll our own certainty bend
