This is a report of the traditional feast which was celebrated on November 6 this year 2019, in the municipality of Mongiuffi Melia (consisting of the two centers of Melia and Mongiuffi, in the province of Messina) in honor of St. Leonard of Noblac , also known as St. Leonard Abbot or hermit, for He was a French abbot who for much of his life he lived as a hermit; November 6 is the date of the saint's death, maybe He died in 1599. San Leonardo is originally the patron saint of convicts, prisoners (when the saint was in life he dedicated himself to prisoners of war, trying to free them, also trying to relieve the severe corporal punishment and fines which they had to submit); later also became the patron saint of blacksmiths, manufacturers of chains, farmers, miners (and robbers), and women in labor too: He rescued Queen Clotilde who had gone into a coma due to serious complications during childbirth, her intervention best solved that serious situation with the queen who succeeded in awakening from a state of coma and giving birth to a beautiful child. In southern Italy the cult of this saint was introduced by the Normans. It's strange to observe that in the hamlet of Mongiuffi besides the devotion to St. Leonard (he is always holding the chains), there is also a great devotion to the "Madonna of the chain", She is holding chains too (and in fact in Mongiuffi there is a sanctuary dedicated to Her).

On the morning of November 6, after the Solemn Mass, the Saint is carried on shoulders on the artistic float , with the music of the local band ("St. Leonard’s band"of Mongiuffi) along the narrow and perched alleys. An exciting time it can be observed when the procession arrives at the Fountain Square, in the center of the country, and here is made a gift to this Patron Saint: He receive a "cuddura" (a donut dough braided) particularly embellished with elegant compositions made always in bread dough, so after "smaller cuddure" are distributed to the population (so called "St. Leonard's cuddure"). At the end of the procession, the float with San Leonardo returns to the church, here we see an other characteristic tradition, called "a 'pisata" (the weighing), now it takes place in symbolic form (in some Sicilian centers it is still performed according to the most rigid tradition, with variations linked to the place), consists in weighing very young children on a rustic weight scale: placed on an axis whose pivot is constituted by one of the arms of the float, the child has as counterweight a sack of wheat , who, once balance is reached, will be given to the Saint.

Particularly interesting to visit the land of Mongiuffi Melia are the so-called Arcofie or Contrabbone, galleries for the transition from house to house probably built by the Arabs.

On our train ride from Ghent to Amsterdam we had a train change in Antwerp. How nice was that. Antwerp's train station is gorgeous. This is the station waiting hall viewed from the train hall entrance.

The Antwerp Central Station is one of the world's most impressive railway stations. Dubbed the 'Railway Cathedral', it is one of the main landmarks in Antwerp.

Between 2000 and 2009 the monumental building was completely modernised and expanded to accommodate the high-speed rail line. More platforms were opened on two additional underground levels.

The unique metal platform roof had previously been restored. In the past Antwerp Central Station was a terminus where trains had to turn around. But since 2007, trains can continue their journey thanks to the railway tunnel between Antwerp Central Station and the north of the city.

The first station building was constructed between 1895 and 1905 as a replacement for the original terminus of the Brussels-Mechelen-Antwerp Railway. The stone clad terminus buildings, with a vast dome above the waiting room hall were designed by Louis Delacenserie.

In 2009 Newsweek judged Antwerpen-Centraal the world's fourth greatest train station. In 2014 the British-American magazine Mashable awarded Antwerpen-Centraal the first place for the most beautiful railway station in the world.

Train hall:

The originally iron and glass train hall (185 metres long and 43 metres high) was designed by Clément Van Bogaert. The height of the station was once necessary for the steam of locomotives. The roof of the train hall was originally made of steel.

World War II damage and restoration:

During World War II, severe damage was inflicted to the train hall by the impact of V-2 bombs, without destroying the structural stability of the building. However warping of the roof substructure due to V-2 bombing caused constructional stresses.

The impact of the bombs are still visible due to a lasting wave-distortion in the roofing of the hall.

In the mid-twentieth century, the building's condition had deteriorated so far that its demolition was being considered. The station was closed on 31 January 1986 for restoration work to the roof and façades.

The stress problems due to the impact of bombs during the war was reportedly solved by the use of polycarbonate sheets instead of glass, due to its elasticity and relative low weight (40% less than glass).

After replacing or repairing steel elements, the structure was painted the burgundy seen today.

The railway station was built between 1895 and 1905 and replaced a wooden train station built in 1854 by engineer Auguste Lambeau.

The rich interior is lavishly decorated with more than twenty different kinds of marble and stone. The main hall and the railway cafeteria can match the interiors of many palaces. Not a single square meter either inside or outside the building is not decorated.

The platforms are covered by a huge iron and glass vaulted ceiling, which was restored in the 1990s. Besides the platform, the vault also covers many of the small diamond and gold shops, which are part of the diamond district next to the Central Station.

The huge glass vault was designed by the architect J. Van Asperen. It is 185 meters long and 44 meters at its highest point. The original platform and tracks themselves are elevated, the two lower levels were added later to accommodate the high speed train connection to Amsterdam.

Get well soon my brother!

I made another version of this shot - here - a bit more of a vintage look... But personally I prefer this softer and whiter look.

Last spring and early summer the robins built a nest on top of this A/C unit. We had to do something to stop them since we needed to use the unit and I didn't want to harm the babies so Craig, our Handyman put a screen above the unit and now there isn't enough room for any bird to get in there. We have these screens on the other A/C units so this was the last one. I'm happy!

I was going to ask whether anyone could hazard a guess as to what this was. Registration number obscured, so nothing to go on. Incidentally, obscured by what? They look like the translucent skylight roof panels from a coach. A little plaque on the front of the vehicle says "COLDITZ". I can't imagine why. Perhaps I should write Colditz, for the inspiration was probably the popular contemporary BBC telly-drama ...and, believe me, if you've read P. R. Reid's books you'll know that the BBC's version was pure drama. By the way, from a calligraphic point of view, all-capital Black Letter script is to be avoided.

This looked the sort of photo I'd have chucked out at the Brislington council refuse disposal centre ("recycling" had not yet been invented) in my great "goodbye to all that" moment of 1982. But I thought I'd check to make sure. Stone me! There it was, the original John Fozard print, still filed away in its Manilla envelope. So. I am happy to be able to give the details. The bus was 291 GKK, an AEC Reliance 2MU3RV with Weymann dual-purpose, 40-seat body, new to Maidstone & District in 1960. I photographed it on Monday 17th April 1978 in Ladvale's Berkeley garage. Ladvale had acquired it from P. D. & A. C. Stump of Berkeley ...whose premises these must have been.

Made this piece up in Madison for the SOLVE get-together.
