We will now be called to face very difficult feelings inside of us.

Fear. Grief. The loss of an old way of life.

Our devastated plans.

We will learn to face ourselves. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.

Nowhere to go except within.

A sacred quarantine.

We will learn to face our boredom. Our restlessness. The part of us that wants to be somewhere else, with someone else, doing something else, having some other experience, in some other Now, living in some other life.

We will let go of the wonderful future we had planned.

We will let the fantasy future die, release it, and grieve it.

We will return to the solidity and warmth of the present.

We will make the present into our home.

We will begin again, here, build a new house on new soil.

We will explore a new way of life.

Strange, at first. But full of possibility.

Slower. Kinder. Quieter.

A CHANGE IS GONNA COME - PASSENGER

In the light of contemplation

the truth of all things comes to light

the truth of textural understanding

of age; rebirth; of long hindsight

historic layers; marks and imprints

footprints; finger prints and stains

scratches; polished imperfections

leaded windows; smudged by rain

cool as night within this building

the ancient stones beneath my feet

chequered; faded; worn and smooth

through centuries the people meet

congregate and contemplate

saying; praying; laying down

the solidity of strong foundations

the solidarity beneath one crown

no matter what religion we are

we are all humans; we all have needs

to live; to love; to join together

share all we have; let the hungry feed

let loving arms surround each other

comfort each mortal soul you see

beneath the shelter of communal skies

we live; we love; you're home to me.

and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind. One cannot change this all in a moment, but one can at least change one's own habits, and from time to time one can even, if one jeers loudly enough, send some worn-out and useless phrase — some jackboot, Achilles' heel, hotbed, melting pot, acid test, veritable inferno or other lump of verbal refuse — into the dustbin where it belongs :-)

Welded stainless-steel sculptures by Lynn Chadwick on the Univ of East Anglia campus, Norwich. In the background is another sculpture - the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, a revolutionary building and the first large commission for Norman Foster..

Part of a photoshoot last week. It was hot, very hot! The campus extensive grasslands were dry and browning to resemble Africa’s savannah. Chadwick’s lion stirred and growled to prompt this somewhat exotic and colourful slider rendering!

Chadwick's semi-abstract work has an ‘engineering’ scent, perhaps from his father’s profession and an early draughtsman training. Rods, blocks and sheets express his figures' lines, planes and tension compared to the rounded carved solidity of, for example, Henry Moore.

The “Lion” and other UEA savannah “Beasts” are late works of 1990.

To the south-west of Tbilisi, in the middle of Mtatsminda Mountain is uplifted dome-type church Saint David Church or Mamadaviti. Name Mtatsminda (Saint Mountain) took its origin from X century, according to Athon Saint Mountain; in previous time it was also cerkov-sv-davida-na-gore-mtacmindacalled Mamadaviti due the fact that according to the preserved source here had lived Saint Father David of Garedji in VI century.

Probably in X century here was founded monastery which was not exist after three centuries. Later on in 1542 under leadership of brothers Nikoloz and David Gabashvili religious house of Saint Mary Virgin was restored. In XVIII century monastery was inactive, damaged building was slowly ruined. In 1810 Transfiguration Church was constructed instead of desolated old monastery in 1810. Wide and twisted rood went up to the monastery was cut in 1817 under supervision of general Ermolov.

Church named by Saint David Garedji or Mamadaviti was constructed during 1859-1871, dome was fixed in 1879. Bricked church outside is look like traditional cross-domed church, but in its design missing longitudinal strut, space differs with solidity and at-oneness. In the west wing is located wooden gallery, there are two entrances from the west and south.cerkov-sv-davida

Fronface differs with slight colourity upper part of south frame bay is decorated with arches and circular small windows. Interior is painted at the end of XIX century. The main part of art occupies pictures of Georgia Saints. In preaching house there is a picture of Saint Trinity. Three-floor preaching house to the south of the church build with bricks, bell-tower is decorated by arch and stone.

Terrace around the Mamadaviti officially is announced as writers and public figures and officially was opened in 1929 to 100 year long anniversary of tragic death of Griboedov in Iran. The first memorable depositing here was internment of famous Russian writer Alexander Griboedov (1795-1829), later on next to him was put to the rest his wife princess Nino Chavchavadze (1812-1857). Since then many outstanding Georgians were put in rest or reburied.

Brutalist architecture is an influential and polarizing architectural style that emerged in the mid-20th century. It is characterized by its raw, robust, and utilitarian aesthetic, often featuring large, exposed concrete structures. Brutalist buildings display a sense of monumentality and solidity, with bold geometric forms and a distinct lack of decorative embellishments. The style prioritizes functionality and the honest expression of materials, focusing on the inherent qualities of concrete. While some consider Brutalism to be visually austere, proponents of the style appreciate its uncompromising honesty, the sculptural qualities of its forms, and its ability to evoke a sense of awe and timelessness.

“The object of art is not to make salable pictures. It is to save yourself.

The fools who write articles about me think that one morning I suddenly decided to write and began to produce masterpieces.

There is no special trick about writing or painting either. I wrote constantly for 15 years before I produced anything with any solidity to it....

The thing of course, is to make yourself alive. Most people remain all of their lives in a stupor.

The point of being an artist is that you may live....

You won't arrive. It is an endless search.”

Artistic framing of a textured and light-colored stone wall constructed with large rectangular blocks with two ornate metal rings against a backdrop of vibrant green and yellow tree.

Rustication is a range of masonry techniques used in classical architecture giving visible surfaces a finish texture that contrasts with smooth, squared-block masonry called ashlar. The visible face of each individual block is cut back around the edges to make its size and placing very clear.

This technique emphasizes the individual stones and their joints, creating a visually striking effect and often used to give a sense of strength and solidity, particularly to the lower levels of a building.

Willem Marinus Dudok, (born July 6, 1884, Amsterdam, Neth.—died April 6, 1974, Hilversum), Dutch architect whose work is related both to the school of Amsterdam, which emphasized individual expression, and to the De Stijl group, which stressed geometric form. He attended the Royal Military Academy at Breda and remained in the army until 1913. He became municipal architect of Hilversum in 1915 and thereafter designed many buildings for the city, notably the Dr. H. Bravink School (1921), the Vondel School (1928–29), and the Town Hall (1928–30). These structures, though compositions of cubes, convey solidity and texture through the use of solid brick.

** This is the final post from our trip to Provence in 2018, its only taken me five years to empty the archive . This final shot is of the incredible Roman aqueduct Pont Du Gard Seeing this remarkable 2,000 year old structure ;Henry James wrote in 1864 ,

“ The hugeness, the solidity, the unexpectedness, the monumental rectitude of the whole thing leave you nothing to say – at the time – and make you stand gazing. You simply feel that it is noble and perfect, that it has the quality of greatness”

A little information

The Pont du Gard is a Roman monument built halfway through the 1st century AD. It is the principal construction in a 50 km long aqueduct that supplied the city of Nîmes, formerly known as Nemausus, with water. Built as a three-level aqueduct standing 50 m high, it allowed water to flow across the Gardon river.

Built on three levels, the Pont is 49 m high above the river at low water and 274 m long. Its width varies from 9 m at the bottom to 3 m at the top. The three levels of arches are recessed, with the main piers in line one above another. The span of the arches varies slightly, as each was constructed independently to provide flexibility to protect against subsidence. Each level has a differing number of arches.

The Pont du Gard was constructed largely without the use of mortar or clamps. It contains an estimated 50,400 tons of limestone some of the individual blocks weigh up to 6 tons. Most of the stone was extracted from the local quarry of Estel located approximately 700 metres downstream, on the banks of the Gardon River. The coarse-grained soft reddish shelly limestone, known locally as "Pierre de Vers", lends itself very well to construction .

Another macro shot of the surface of a fallen leaf. I expected orange, red, and yellow, but where did that crazy blue come from? This is one of the leaves featured in the first shot in this series; if you want to see the entire leaf, to compare, go back three images.

Couple more still to come. I am staring out my window at a white world, with at least a foot of fresh snow that has fallen in the past 36 hours. It's beautiful, in a cold, sterile way. And cold it is, -20°C when I got up, with even colder temperatures coming (-29, they say, for Wednesday). So I will be out there with the snow shovel today. And these fiery close ups won't keep me physically warm - that is up to my furnace and the solidity of my house - but psychologically I think they are filling some deep need...

The Bridge of Dun, which gave its name to the junction station between the Glasgow to Aberdeen main line and the branch to Brechin, which branch is now preserved as the Caledonian Railway.

The dates of construction of this bridge over the River South Esk are given as work starting on 7 June 1785 and opening to traffic on 27 January 1787, quite surprisingly detailed for the time, when information about similar structures can often be pinned down to nothing closer than a month or so.

Perhaps more unexpected is that a bridge of this size and solidity was provided for nothing more than a most minor road, that even now links very scant habitation, so the two cars and a motorcycle that I saw cross in a 15-20 minutes on a Saturday afternoon may be typical.

This three arch stone bridge in Gothic style even has individual supports for the refuges that traffic levels surely can never have warranted, three columns under each refuge being mounted on the cut-waters.

First, I want to thank Vooms Fairlock for modeling with me for this picture. Vooms, you were a great subject and I enjoyed taking this picture!

Every now and then when the light slants across a Julia's wings, my mind gets blown by the texture and color that's created.

Most of the time in direct light the Julia's wings are a bright orange. When light shines through from behind they almost glow.

But in this glancing light the wings take on a solidity.

The western facade is typically in the Brabant Gothic style with its very orderly flamboyant decoration. But it is also inspired by the typology of French cathedrals, with its two towers and three portals surmounted by their gable. However, unlike the French facades, it does not have a rose window, the latter being replaced by a large Brabant glass roof. The two towers whose tops are arranged in terraces are attributed to Jan Van Ruysbroeck (1470-1485), the architect of the tower of the Brussels City Hall. They are unfinished and should have been much higher, in a style close to the tower of the town hall or the north tower of the cathedral of Antwerp.

The strong predominance of the vertical lines of this façade is striking, it is a typical feature of Brabant Gothic. Four sturdy buttresses surround and separate the three portals. At both ends, the side buttresses are particularly important. Wide of more than four meters, they integrate two high turrets pierced with loopholes which soar in a single jet to the tops of the towers. Each of these turrets houses a long spiral staircase that connects the ground floor to all the floors of the facade and the towers, and thus extends to the terraces of the summits, almost 65 meters high. These powerful side buttresses and their turret with loopholes help to give the facade an impression of power and solidity.

Santa Catalina Monastery (Arequipa- Perù) 20221121

The Monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena is a large monastery of the Dominican Second Order, located in Arequipa, Peru.

This is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historical Centre of the City of Arequipa".

The charm of this citadel lies in the solidity and plasticity of its volumes, and the beauty that master builders achieved in the architecture of these enclosures through solutions such as flying buttresses or the construction of strong arches based on pillars.

In the interiors, domes and vaulted ceilings greatly expand the space and add to the sense of strength of the buildings. Likewise, especially in the area of the alleys, the intervention of masons who, lacking a proper architectural design, were raising walls, roofs, cells, patios and portals of a simple approach is perceived.

The current building houses splendid pieces of art, such as a Baroque altar of carved and gilt wood, with one body and three lanes, which adorns the chapel, and several paintings from the Cusco School.

Due to the constant earthquakes that affected the monastery, the families of the nuns chose to build unique and private cells for each one of them. What caused there to be ordered sectors and in the absence of a plan others with a notorious disorder. For almost two centuries during the colony, the cloisters and cells of the monastery have undergone various modifications, additions and new constructions that have made Santa Catalina a counter on a human scale of Arequipa's colonial architecture.

So, I don't think this is breaking any rules as much as not really following any. It takes a little while to read I think, and for the eyes to settle down with it, but I think it has a cumulative softness that weirdly comes from the sheer noise and complexity of the parts. As solidity comes from the density of many particles. Either way, it's a bit of an anomaly in my photography so far. A bit different, and certainly not everyone's cup of tea; but I think it has a special hard-to-define quality about it. :-)

It's not wildlife photography. It has a bird in it but it's definitely not a clear subject.

It's not nature photography as such, I don't think it has any specifics or study that is defined enough to say so.

It's not landscape photography; it doesn't give any context to the frame as such to explain location or environment.

I think the pattern, colour, texture and tones are all that are important here actually. I'm not sure it matters much what the materials of their constitution are in this. Perhaps I should have gone into textiles or something... :-)

P.S. If anybody would like to have a go at explaining myself better than I can, please do feel free to chip in down below! :-)
