I found it interesting to see the juxtaposition of the bee-hive houses in Harran, Turkey, where the archaeological tradition dates back at least 3000 years, with the modern solar water heater and the plastic coverings on the ventilation openings on top of some of the huts. Also the flat-roofed stone and mud building in the foreground (Neolithic technology) had a roof of corrugated steel or aluminum (20th C technology).

The first passive houses in Sweden were built 2001 in Lindås, south of Gothenburg. The photo shows the facade towards south with small gardens. The solar collectors on the roof provide domestic hot water.

Architect: Efem arkitektkontor, Gothenburg.

For a Passive House in a cold climate no radiators or under-floor heating are necessary. The building is superinsulated and airtight and has therefore only minor transmission and ventilation losses. It is primarily heated by radiated solar energy, heat produced by humans, household machinery, domestic electronic equipment and light fittings.

Those look like fairly expensive solar water heaters on the roof. Probably only the fact that they can't be seen from the street has stopped them being ripped off.

This carwash has stood in various states of dereliction on Walter Road in Embleton for years. I don't believe it's ever washed a single vehicle.

A few years ago I had thoughts about building a solar water heater. I finally got around to producing a proof of concept prototype this morning

The collector is 4 feet square and 6 inches tall. I used an old double glazed panel for the top , some 2 inch thick polysterene sheets to insulate the base and some 4 feet long by 6 inch tall planks for the sides.

The polysterene sheets fit snuggly inside the base of the frame. I covered the white polysterene with an old black pond liner to absorb as much heat from the sun as possible .

I put a small tray ( about 15 inches by 8 inches by 2 inches) of cold tap water, the temperature of which was initially 15c . into the solar collector. I added two thermometers one placed in the water the other directly onto the floor of the collector

I then placed the double glazing panel measuring 4 feet by 4 feet on top of the base to keep in as much heat as possible

It was sunny and about 23c outside.

30 minutes later the temperature inside the collector was over 55c. One hour later the water in the tank was 53c which is hotter than the water from the hot tap when I run my bath.

I left the collector for a couple of hours and when I returned this is what the thermometer on the base of the collector looked like!

www.flickr.com/photos/31559373@N00/51221619319/in/datepos...

I think I've proved to my satisfaction that this collector could easily heat enough hot water for my daily use on any day when there's sunshine . The glass in the double glazing has a large crack and the top wasn't fully sealed so the final version should run even hotter.

The idea the the final version is to run copper piping inside the collector and the sun will heat the water inside the pipes and the heat will be transferred via a heat exchanger into a copper cylinder which will also have an immersion heater as back up. There will be a differential thermostat telling a pump to work when the temperature in the collector is higher than in the inside storage tank. The water in the pipes outside will contain antifreeze to stop it freezing in winter.

I have a 10 metre by 4 metre flat roof so I,ve plenty of sun receiving roof to play with.

Bought a $10 barrel today, molded in black and boy does it absorb the sun's energy. Just 15 minutes after sitting it up on the platform, the temperature inside was 148F, with the outside ambient temperature being 86F. This barrel will eventually be wrapped/encapsulated in clear corrugated plastic panels, creating an air gap to keep the blowing wind from lowering the heated water's temp as bad. NOTE: I still have some plumbing, vinyl siding, rain guttering and rain barrels to install, but the project is coming along nicely, oh and I can't forget to underpin the little building once it's all said and done.

At the same time the gas medium turns into the liquid when cooled, then flows down. Keep recycling.

2) An electronic controoler measures the temperature of the solar collector and the water in the bottom of the storage tank. If the collector is hotter, meaning there is heat available. The controller supplies power to a circulation pump which pushes liquid which in circulation system circulating. The heat will transferred to storage tank via the liquid.

Sunlight passes through the glazing and strikes the absorber plate, which heats up, changing solar energy into heat energy. The heat is transferred to liquid passing through pipes attached to the absorber plate. Absorber plates are commonly painted with "selective coatings," which absorb and retain heat better than ordinary black paint. Absorber plates are usually made of copper or aluminum because the metal is a good heat conductor. Copper is more expensive, but is a better conductor and less prone to corrosion than aluminum. In locations with average available solar energy, flat plate collectors are sized approximately one-half- to one-square foot per gallon of one-day's hot water use.

A flat-plate collector consists of an absorber, a transparent cover, a frame, and insulation. Usually an iron-poor solar safety glass is used as a transparent cover, as it transmits a great amount of the short-wave light spectrum.

Simultaneously, only very little of the heat emitted by the absorber escapes the cover (greenhouse effect).

In addition, the transparent cover prevents wind and breezes from carrying the collected heat away (convection). Together with the frame, the cover protects the absorber from adverse weather conditions. Typical frame materials include aluminum and galvanized steel; sometimes fiberglass-reinforced plastic is used.

The insulation on the back of the absorber and on the side walls lessens the heat loss through conduction. Insulation is usually of polyurethane foam or mineral wool, though sometimes mineral fiber insulating materials like glass wool, rock wool, glass fiber or fiberglass are used.

Flat collectors demonstrate a good price-performance ratio, as well as a broad range of mounting possibilities (on the roof, in the roof itself, or unattached).

In order to reduce heat loss within the frame by convection, the air can be pumped out of the collector tubes. Such collectors then can be called evacuated-tube collectors. They must be re-evacuated once every one to three years.

We manufacturer wide range of solar products like solar power inverters, power panels, lights, fencing systems, water heating system and air conditioner from Coimbatore, India. Solar Water Heater

These turbines are 15metres shorter than the 130 or so planned for the Turitea wind " farm "

The Manawatu has become an environmental dumping ground. These giant turbines act like huge tuning forks and when in operation send vibrations through the ground over a radius of up to 5 kms with a potentially serious impact on anyone who lives near them

And then there is the noise, whooshing and thumping as the blades pass the towers

Don't forget the low frequency infrasound too, rather like the party down the road with a pulsating beat which you feel but can't quite hear. Oh, and flicker too, but that's OK, just keep your curtains drawn.

Solar water heaters can significantly and permanently lower electricity consumption to the benefit of the consumer. Giant turbines are a non renewable way to exploit a renewable resource. When they wear out in 20 or so years fossil fuel will be so expensive that they can not be replaced - the shortfall in oil supply is expected as early as 2011 and by 2015 will reach 10 million barrels per day, if not earlier. The American and German military have prepared reports on this certainty. The Briish Govt is well aware and has secret documentation which it refuse to release. We have only a very small window of opportunity to prepare New Zealanders to assume personal responsibility for energy use.Solar water heaters are durable and will continue to provide for their owners without further cost to them and be a tangible asset to their home. To save the environment you don't have to first destroy it. Wind farms are extremely wasteful. As energy producers they just don't cut it.

NEWS FLASH !

The Motorimu commissioners citing landscape, noise and cultural concerns have cut the allowable number of turbines for the Motorimu scheme from 127 to 75.

This decision has made it virtually impossible for the Turitea wind farm to proceed whatever the outcome of the court case.
