What's wrong with this picture? A solar-powered parking meter might not like snow-covered solar collector panels or frozen buttons on the control panel. (Overheard in the Mayor's office) "I've gotten many, many complaints. We had to give a day's grace when all the meters froze after the freezing rain here. Aren't they supposed to be guaranteed to -40 C? What's the name of that company that installed those new $4M. parking meters? The solar powered ones . . . yeah. Call them up. I'll do the talking." So the company that installed these solar-powered parking meters has to service them and squirt antifreeze on the buttons which seem to want to freeze solid in freezing rain. 'Ooopsie!'

When you think about windows, you probably imagine a basic pane of double glazing, surrounded by some white u-pvc. Am I right? Well, what if I told you that possibly in the near future your window will allow you access to your Twitter account and be used to watch films, rather than from your tiny TV in the kitchen?
Tindo is the aboriginal word for sun, and the vehicle’s power comes from a solar photo-voltaic system installed on the roof.

I haven't charged my cellphone in a wall outlet since christmas eve.
I got this solar powered charger, with a built in battery.
It workes by beeing placed in the window, were the sun can charge it. It is then charged during the day, and in the evening I can plug it into my cell phone. Next morning my phone is fully charged.
I really like the idea of beeing able to charge my phone, in a CO2 neutral way.
Free your inner nerd while you hug some trees. :D They actually stay lit for about 4 hours after dark; as an added bonus, they light automatically after dusk. (Available from Target for about $20)
I made some mason jar solar lights for my garden! Don't they look cute in this basket so I can just move it around wherever. :D
Local residents leave after attending a ceremony marking the handover of a United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Quick Impact Project (QIPS), which included the construction of a solar powered-water system and
the clearance of vegetation surrounding three communities around UN-House. David Shearer, special representative to the United Nations mission in South Sudan, together with Lt. Gen. Michael Chiangjiek Geay, South Sudan's Minister of Interior, officially opened the site in Juba on Thursday 29th June, 2017.
The bushy surroundings of the PoCs had become a hot-bed for criminal activities. Firearms and other contraband items were often hidden in these bushes and later
used by aggressive and often violent youths whose criminal activities threatened peace and security for
almost 40,000 IDPs, UN personnel, and host communities. Both the vegetation clearance and water system projects are designed to address insecurity and promote peaceful inter-communal co-existence through strengthening the South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS) at the Yei-road check-point, UNMISS patrolling and surveillance operations in the Weapons Free Zone, and engagement with the host communities.
I was lucky enough to tag along with my mother and visit one of her friend's amazing house and garden. Extremely well kept (army of servents ensure that, I even saw them hand mowing the lawn blade by blade) and super luxurious. This place would be expensive in any country. However completely sustainable. Totally off the grid with solar power and a garden that produces all the fruit and vegetables required.

The Selenium element was known to science in the late 1800s as having the property of outputting a voltage when exposed to light, but the amout of output was so small and fleeting in its output characteristics that it made it little more than wondrous novelty to early electricity scientists and their backers of the day. Then somewhere around the late 1920s, Weston figured out how to meld this element with other others to stabilized this earliest of solar cells and make their output large enough to drive one of their most efficient meter movements of the era like the Weston 301 movement which is used on this early generation foot-candle meter modeled 614 and set out out to make a device that could be used to reliably and repeatably measure all manner of light sources and provided a handy guide for establishing lighting standards for home, work and industry. Weston originally thought about using it for automatically triggering street lighting to come on when it got dark and turn back off once the sun rose bright enough to trigger the off switch. It also got adapted into elevators to stop the doors from closing when a person broke the beam to switch the door back open. Relays, were also a going concern in Weston's affairs and they excelled in all of these various studies in electricity.
There were a handful of these models made from very compact to more industrial sized models aimed strictly at industry users. The whole craze of photography also leaped on board with this as well, as Weston helped to establish a means of scientifically setting up your camera settings based on the light in the shot. Film makers of the day as well took hold of all this new technology Weston brought to the playing field and Weston made specific meters for them as well.
The Christmas Tree erected by the Brisbane City Council in King George Square is solar powered, making a brilliant display at night time. I will have to make a visit into the city one evening to capture it in all its brilliance. In the meantime, you can enjoy this video of the first night the lights were turned on this year:

Short video of two toys we got in Japan back in 2010 that are solar-powered. They get lots of sun in winter due to where we put them (and lots of dust all of the time).
These now sit in the window of our house in Kitahiroshima - we brought them back (but not the spider webs around them) with us when we moved here in 2016.
