The last sunflower was set in motion in Tin Ujević elementary school in Zagreb.

Founded by Hrvatski Telekom and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the HRK 400,000 project "Solar Sunflowers" is intended to educate school children about renewable energy sources through the installation of ten small solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.

105 solar panels are installed at Littlestown Veterinary Hospital in Littlestown, PA, in mid September 2010. The Littlestown Veterinary Hospital in Littlestown, PA, received a grant from the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Rural Development under the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) to have solar panels installed to help reduce their carbon footprint and to have cost effective electric power for the hospital. REAP provides grants for energy audits and renewable energy development assistance. The program also provides funds to agricultural producers and rural small business to purchase and install renewable energy systems and make energy efficiency improvements. This is a hybrid panel from the innovative solar power company "Solarus" from Sweden. It will step up the efficiency and longevity of solar power to a new level, not yet seen in solar heating and PV electrics.

 

The rays of the sun are focused inside the unit onto a solar PV by a factor of around 3:1. This means less of the expensive solar PVs are needed, to generate the same amount of electric power.

 

Solar PVs do not like to become hot. The hotter they are, the less they yield, AND the quicker the long term decay of efficiency.

 

Solarus has ingeniously mitigated this problem by combining this unit with solar heating, allowing the excess heat generated to be cooled by hot water and space heating use.

 

The IdealThermals concept takes the Solarus panels even further by combining it with seasonal heat storage. This means that adequate cooling for the Solarus units is available all year round, even in the hottest of summers.

 

Seasonal heat storage in the IdealThermals concept is made in a way where the mass of clay, earth, sand, rock or other substance below a building, is heated in the summer to store it for the winter. The mass is insulated on the sides sloping downwards. Adequate distance to natural ground water must be sufficient for the system to operate.

 

This Solarus panel will be one of the important parts of the IdealThermals set of ideas, and it is expected to be commercially available during the course of 2011.

Solar power was used 1986 to completely energize the 80,000 square foot Barefoot College campus at Tilonia. The College campus now is totally self-sufficient with a 40 kilowatt solar energy unit meeting all its energy needs.

Microchip Technology's 14-member dsPIC33EP “GS” family of Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs) delivers the performance needed to implement more sophisticated non-linear, predictive and adaptive control algorithms at higher switching frequencies. Variants from this new digital-power-optimized DSC family are available in an industry’s-smallest, 4 x 4 mm UQFN package for space-constrained designs. Esenaman once used to be one of the major watering spots for the Garagum livestock; one of Turkmenistan’s most lucrative economic sectors. Now, all that the rusty steel pipes leading into the reservoir of water serve as is a reminder of its past. Climate change and harsh weather conditions dried up the devices used to collect and store water. Shepherds and herders brought their livestock elsewhere to graze, putting pressure on those land areas.

 

Now a solar-powered pump and renovated containment systems will provide water for the livestock to return.

Mariam Badjie from The Gambia was trained to become a barefoot solar engineer at the Barefoot College in India. Mariam returned in May, 2007 to solar electrify her community in The Gambia.

 

Mariama only speaks Jola, a local dialect. She is 44 years old, a mother of four, married to a farmer and illiterate. She comes from a small village, Cafenke, of about 45 houses. She says she likes to learn new things and that it’s never too late to start.

 

Besides learning all about solar electrification in her 6 months of training at the College, she learned many Hindi words and through her friendship with the Bolivian women even started learning Spanish words. In her spare time, she began to study the alphabet and with the help of her new friends she learned how to sign her name.

My name is Santi Regmi, I live in Walling VDC, ward no. 7, Sirubari. There are 8 members in my family. My day starts with household chores then, I have 3 children so I have to send them to school. Our source of income is agriculture, I grow tomatoes.

 

I have experienced a significant difference after the installation of Solar MUS. Previously, we had to carry pots to get water in the morning which we don't have to do so anymore. Now we get water from the tap nearby our house. Before, we had to wake up an hour early which we don't have to anymore.

 

The earthquake destroyed my home but everybody in my family are safe. The local authorities recorded my home as 'completely damaged' but when they gave us the card, it was for 'partially damaged'. I haven't claimed relief from that card. Instead, I have re-applied stating that my house is completely damaged. Those authorities have already come and gone but the police said they would come to check which till now, they haven’t. So I haven't received any relief yet. My concern is regarding no help for the damaged caused by the earthquake. Others in the village have received support but I haven't.

 

I am very happy with the solar system. Solar has provided better access to water, we have been able to do vegetable farming nearby our house. Water supply is sufficient. Even though it is limited for a large scale farming, we can grow enough vegetables for our family.

Renewable Energy/ Energía Renovable invites OMSI visitors to learn about emerging sources of energy as well as consider the tradeoffs involved in using any energy source.
