Activist and community members rallied at the Massachusetts State House to protest Massport and private developers proposal to triple the hangar space at Hanscom Field Civil Airport for the exclusive use of private jet luxury jets. The advocated brought with them petitions with more than 10,000 signatures urging Governor Maura Healey to oppose the project.
If the proposed expansion goes ahead, private jet emissions from Hanscom alone could cancel up to 70% of the climate benefits from all the solar PV ever installed in Massachusetts. More private jets mean more carbon dioxide emissions. More carbon dioxide emissions mean the state would be backsliding on its effort to combat climate change. According to concerned citizens private jets use 10 to 20 times more fuel per passenger than do commercial aircraft. Small jets are estimated to be up to 14 times more polluting per passenger. In 2016, they were responsible for some 33.7 million tons of carbon dioxide worldwide. That’s more than the entire nation of Denmark emitted in 2020.
