Three Levels of passive solar energy use for homes:

Pragmatic:

Many detached suburban houses can achieve reductions in heating expense without obvious changes to their appearance, comfort or usability.

This is done using good siting and window positioning, small amounts of thermal mass, with good but conventional insulation and occasional supplementary heat from a central radiator connected to a water heater.

Sunrays may fall onto a wall during the daytime, which will radiate heat in the evening.

Annualized:

Historically, most "passive solar" approaches have depended on near-daily solar capture and storage, only expected to maintain temperatures through a few days and nights. These are now termed "short-cycle passive solar".

More recent research has developed techniques to capture warm-season solar heat, convey it to a seasonal thermal store for use months later during the cool or cold season. This is referred to as "annualized passive solar." This requires large amounts of thermal mass. One technique buries water-proof insulation in 7-metre skirts around the foundation, and buries loops of plastic pipe or ducts under the foundations and slab. The "skirts" of insulation prevent heat leaks from weather or water.

Minimum machinery:

A "purely passive" solar-heated house would have no mechanical furnace unit, relying instead on energy captured from sunshine, only supplemented by "incidental" heat energy given off by lights, candles , other task-specific appliances (such as those for cooking, entertainment, etc.), showering, people and pets. The use of natural air currents (rather than mechanical devices such as fans) to circulate air is related, though not strictly solar design.

The term solar panel is best applied to a flat solar thermal collector, such as a solar hot water or air panel used to heat water, air, or otherwise collect solar thermal energy. But 'solar panel' may also refer to a photovoltaic module which is an assembly of solar cells used to generate electricity. In all cases, the panels are typically flat, and are available in various heights and widths.

An array is an assembly of solar-thermal panels or photovoltaic (PV) modules; the panels can be connected either in parallel or series depending upon the design objective. Solar panels typically find use in residential, commercial, institutional, and light industrial applications.

Solar-thermal panels saw widespread use in Florida and California until the 1920s when tank-type water heaters replaced them. A thriving manufacturing business soon dwindled. However, solar-thermal panels are still in production, and are common in portions of the world where energy costs, and solar energy availability, are high as a direct result of todayโ€™s global warming effects .

Recently there has been a surge toward large scale production of PV modules. In parts of the world with significantly high insolation levels, PV output and their economics are enhanced. PV modules are the primary component of most small-scale solar-electric power generating facilities. Larger facilities, such as solar power plants typically contain an array of reflectors (concentrators), a receiver, and a thermodynamic power cycle, and thus use solar-thermal rather than PV.

The largest solar panel in the world is under construction in the south of Portugal. A 116-megawatt facility covering a 250-hectare south-facing hillside in the southern Alentejo region and it will produce electricity for 25,000 households.

Solar radiation reaches the Earth's upper atmosphere at a rate of 1366 watts per square meter (W/m2).

While traveling through the atmosphere 6% of the incoming solar radiation (insolation) is reflected and 16% is absorbed resulting in a peak irradiance at the equator of 1,020 W/mยฒ. Average atmospheric conditions (clouds, dust, pollutants) further reduce insolation by 20% through reflection and 3% through absorption.

Atmospheric conditions not only reduce the quantity of insolation reaching the Earth's surface but also affect the quality of insolation by diffusing incoming light and altering its spectrum.

After passing through the Earth's atmosphere, most of the sun's energy is in the form of visible and Infrared radiations. Plants use solar energy to create chemical energy through photosynthesis. Humans regularly use this energy burning wood or fossil fuels, or when simply eating the plants.

A recent concern is "Global Dimming" an effect of pollution that is allowing less sunlight to reach the Earth's surface. It is intricately linked with pollution particles and global warming, and it is mostly of concern for issues of global climate change, but is also of concern to proponents of solar power because of the existing and potential future decreases in available solar energy. The order of magnitude is about 4% less solar energy available at sea level over the timeframe of 1961โ€“90, mostly from increased reflection from clouds back into outer space.

Microchip Technology's 14-member dsPIC33EP โ€œGSโ€ family of Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs) delivers the performance needed to implement more sophisticated non-linear, predictive and adaptive control algorithms at higher switching frequencies. These advanced algorithms enable power supply designs that are more energy efficient and have better power supply specifications. Higher switching frequencies enable the development of physically smaller power supplies that offer higher densities and lower costs. Compared with the previous generation of DSCs, the new dsPIC33EP โ€œGSโ€ devices provide less than half the latency, when used in a three-pole three-zero compensator, and consume up to 80% less power in any application.

This new dsPIC33EP โ€œGSโ€ family includes advanced features such as Live Update Flash capability, which is especially helpful for high-availability or โ€œalways-onโ€ systems. Live Update can be used to change the firmware of an operating power supply, including the active compensator calculation code, while maintaining continuous regulation. Variants from this new digital-power-optimized DSC family are available in an industryโ€™s-smallest, 4 x 4 mm UQFN package for space-constrained designs. For more info, visit www.microchip.com/dsPIC33EP64GS506-051215a

The dsPIC33EP โ€œGSโ€ family is supported by Microchipโ€™s MPLABยฎ Starter Kit for Digital Power (part # DM330017-2, $129.99), which allows customers to explore using the new dsPIC33EP โ€œGSโ€ family in popular digital power-conversion topologies. Solar photovoltaic panels generate DC (Direct Current) electricity. However, almost every household and business in Southern California uses AC (Alternating Current) electricity. A solar inverter changes DC power to AC power so it can provide electricity that is suitable for use in your home or business. Also, this conversion allows you to โ€œbackfeedโ€ electricity to the utility grid to which the inverter is connected so that you can sell electricity back to the utility company (a process that is known as net metering).

There are two types inverters used in solar installations today: 1) a central โ€œstringโ€ inverter or 2) multiple small โ€œmicroโ€ inverters. Micro-inverters are relative newcomers to the marketplace and despite their higher cost (as much as 30% more than a central inverter) their popularity has been growing rapidly in Southern California. In 2008 there were only 18 residential solar systems that possessed micro-inverter technology, but by the end of 2012 that number had increased to 12,000.1

A typical central inverter is located at ground level, usually near the Main Electrical Service Panel. It combines all of the power from multiple solar panels in this one central location. As a result, voltages can be quite high in the central inverter, sometimes as much as 600 volts DC. Micro-inverters are connected to each solar panel in the system and immediately convert DC power to AC current, usually at 240 volts. Although both voltages can be dangerous, there is an improved safety factor when using micro-inverters that have lower voltages.

Other perceived advantages of micro-inverters:

Since each solar panel has its own inverter, a failure would mean that only one panel is not working;

One panelโ€™s poor performance would not affect its neighborโ€™s production, but if there is a shaded panel in a system with a central inverter then it can alter the energy output of other panels;

Multiple orientations of panels are possible with micro-inverters while a central inverter usually requires its panels to all face in the same direction.

On the other hand, there are disadvantages associated with micro-inverters:

Because they are rooftop-mounted, there are higher installation costs and higher costs associated with future serviceability;

A micro-inverter is installed on the roof under the solar panel where high heat could reduce its life, whereas central inverters have a documented history of reliable performance;

Voltage drops for long runs at 240 volts of AC power in micro-inverters is greater than that with higher voltage DC wiring associated with central inverters.

Although performance and failure rates are more predictable with central inverters at this point in time, the future looks promising for individual or micro-inverters. If reliability and cost trends continue, central โ€œstringโ€ inverters may become a feature of the past in the not too distant future.

The fact that micro-inverters allow AC power output of a solar system to be interrupted by a switch located at ground level markedly improves safety for first responders in the event of a fire. In addition, the ability to design a system with minimal regard for solar panel orientation opens up more roof area for module deployment. Lastly, since many micro-inverter manufacturers provide module-level monitoring, a defective unit will be recognized and replaced, hopefully in time to take advantage of its warranty. This may become more crucial in time as smaller foreign manufacturers leave the US market.

All in all, micro-inverter technology is a winner on many levels, but only time will decide which technology crosses the finish line.
