As tonight was the first airing of the CSI/Second Life crossover, a big event both for my friends and former co-workers and my former teacher from Electric Sheep, I jumped in world to take a look at the themed island related to the show.
In the episode a detective on the TV show uses Second Life to hunt a killer. In general, the show did a better-than-average job of representing the software involved; it didn't stoop to only-nerds-use-this conventions, and featured a number of creations by SL artists I'm familiar with -- a Wynx tiny like the one I'm wearing here featured in the plot, and there was a dragon in the background I was pretty sure was from Isle of Wyrms, which was kind of neat. I hope they got credited somehow!
It did, however, involve silly technology noises added to minor actions in-world, hinge on one of those HOLY SHIT IT'S A VIRUS -- YOU CAN TELL BECAUSE OF ALL THE REPLICATING IMAGES -- GET IN THE CAR BEFORE IT DEVOURS OUR INTERNETS!!!!1 scenes, and display a positively *shameless* misrepresentation of Second Life's graphic quality (compare the show to this screenshot, which was taken with a number of graphics sliders turned wayyyy down so my G4 could actually swallow what the island was cramming down its throat).
Anyway, afterwards I went in to check out the island Electric Sheep developed as a tie-in. Good-quality builds, definite improvements to how they're running HUDs... but something about the story was very strange.
While the episode itself kept a pretty clear distinction, the island begins to blur the lines between CSI, real life, and SL. The premise that you're a CSI makes plenty of sense... but they're asking you to process fingerprints from evidence in Second Life. Fingerprints from what? How? Did SL finally implement LLGetFingerprints, so I can turn this evidence in to Mac and Stella?
And then we come to this kiosk. I stood in front of this for a good five minutes, hoping it would load and explain to me why there was a pegasus vendor in their virtual version of Central Park. It didn't, exactly. The roped-off crime scene to the right concerns a guy who we're told was taking "a flying tour," with, um, wings, and caught on fire. And we're supposed to do analysis of where the fire started and how he burned? So, now we're doing real-life forensic work on cases with Second Life rules?
Curiouser and curiouser...
