the airport is a place of passage, a liminal zone where lives intersect briefly, then scatter. here, under the sharp geometry of steel and glass, a lone traveler walks, dwarfed by the vast structure that frames her journey. the parallel lines of the moving walkway stretch into infinity, a quiet reminder of forward motion, of destinations yet to come. the muted sepia tones soften the harsh modernity, wrapping the scene in a blanket of nostalgia. it’s a moment caught between departures and arrivals, between now and soon—a fleeting whisper in the echoing halls of transit.

The unstoppable incursion of spring is beginning to dominate the northland, breaking the cold, iron-hard grip of winter... and what a welcome seasonal advance it is!

Spring meltwater in the wetlands at the foot of the Cathedral Mountains.

This was about a week ago, I haven't gone to this pond since, because of cloudy weather.

I am hoping there have been welcome changes in the ice and snow since then....

Softening ice, disintegrating snow, and maybe the frogs are thawing....

Below freezing at night, but this day warmed to 55° F (13°).

Sea softened pilings are found everywhere along the beaches on the Rockaway Peninsula.

I headed out to the Rockaways this weekend to photograph the endangered Piping Plover. But, me being me, I found two pathways leading into the high dunes intriguing. Would I see hawks or falcons or an owl among the parks many pine trees? No, autumn is the best season to view raptors, but what I did find...... Tomorrow, the graffiti filled bunkers of Fort Tilden.

Note: Beginning June 15th, a $50 fishing permit is required to park in Fort Tilden; well worth the price of admission if you enjoy surfing casting for sea bass, blues, and summer flounder, or just strolling around taking snaps.

Also, there are no snack bars in Fort Tilden. So, if you don't bring it with you..... which may account for the large number of imported beer bottes I found among the cans of spray paint in the WWII bunkers.

"Brutalism" as an architectural style that features, among other things, unadorned concrete--in this case, the hard surface is molded with an interesting pattern. More about it. These plants are super-vigorous and hard to eradicate, once they become established. "Plant near concrete" is one of the recommendations for controlling it!

HFF cant quite believe its the last friday of the summer holidays (what summer??) anyway how many weeks until half term?!?! ;) HFF :)

Barbed wire.

“The rain has stopped.”, I cried, “Let us sally forth for our afternoon walk!” … One foot out of the door and water started to plummet again. Never mind, I thought, it is just light… Oh dear, how wrong I was!

So, from this I have concluded photographing stuff in the rain is really Not Fun, especially when you need to point the lens up towards the clouds because you are meant to be photographing silhouettes for the Macro Mondays theme. The camera gets wet, the lens gets wet, your boots leak, and your glasses need wipers. Did I mention wet socks? Probably best not to...

But there is an upside: you get drops! I love the drop on this one which takes the sharpness out of the barb – you can just about see a hair in the droplet. It's just over 2 inches across I guess.

I hope you enjoy the image. Thank you for taking time to drop by!

[Handheld in daylight, well dark cloud-light. :) Basic processing in LR with moderate exposure (to preserve edges) and sharply increased contrast. Then into Affinity Photo: levels filter to chop the top and bottom off the histogram; sharpened vigorously in Topaz Detail; because there was so little colour information left I converted to quad-tone in Topaz B&W (using Orange/Blue palette because my feet were cold); slight dark vignette, and vertical cropping.]

Softening the bamboo under the fire to make it malleable for basket weaving.

The softening light of late afternoon illuminates the rust autumn leaves and moss-draped sunward branches of a cypress stand in the bayou near Uncertain, Texas.

This is another of what over time will likely be a number of posts from my recent quick trip to the swamps around Caddo Lake in Louisiana and Texas with good friends Josh Krasner and Sky Matthews. Moving through this magical fusion of water and forest, I was taken at every turn by the evolving light and shadow conditions, and I particularly loved how, behind the richly lit areas, almost skeletal detail remained visible in some of the shadowed trees and moss. Truly an environment of uncommon beauty.

Thanks for viewing.

Creosote plant in eveing light as wind-blown sand softens the contours of receding dunes.

This is (yet another!) photograph that demonstrates the conjunction of a range of things: planning, good luck, responding quickly to conditions, and more. Regarding the planning part, I had made a long drive to a place a mile or so from this spot, where I set up a primitive camp and waited for the late-day light. A lot of good luck was involved — this was my first time at this location, and I made some guesses about where to be when the evening light arrived, and the guesses turned out pretty well.

As to conditions, several things were happening here. First, it was extremely windy, so I made some decisions about camera setup to deal with that. I made the exposure during a short interval of less wind. Second, there was only a brief interval during which the light acquired the warm, evening color before shadows from a low mountain range to the west “turned out the lights.” If you look closely you can already see some shadows starting to creep into the edges of the frame.

The clouds provided by a recently passed storm soften the light at the Horseshoe Bend which was created by the power of the Colorado River. The site is located near Page, AZ and is upstream of the Grand Canyon and shortly downstream of the the Glen Canyon Dam that forms Lake Powell. As with other sites, people endanger themselves by doing such things as sitting on the edge of the cliffs which rise about 1,000 ft above the river.

This is a different approach from my earlier 14 mm photo. Taken at 24 mm, I think that it brings the formation and the Colorado River closer and helps them dominate the photo. Also, the distant mountains and the storm appear closer. I used the close rocks to frame the photo, but kept them out of focus to draw more attention to the bend itself.

Fresh snow and trees after two days of heavy snowing.

A snowshoe hike in a bear forest. Well, it's winter so the brown bears are in hibernation. They also avoid people which I got see myself few years back. Although it was a Very long minute waiting for the mother bear and her cubs to move aside (I couldn't, as it was too narrow track to turn my motorcycle around).

Tamron 28-200 is sharp at F/8, but I softened this photo a bit in "black mist filter style".

BTW, you can get the black mist effect in PS by duplicating the background layer, blurring it and conditional blending it only where the underlaying layer is bright. This way shadow areas stay sharp and black, only bright areas get that soft "mist" glow.
