I photographed this sea shell on a recent visit to long time friends in Prescott, Arizona.
We first placed the shell on a piece of black lucite and then lit it with a Yongnuo flash in a 8.6 inch Lastolite softbox, in manual mode, placed on the left side of the shell and just out of camera range. Fill light came from a hand held mirror at camera right. The strobe and camera were triggered with a Yongnuo RF-603N
I find sea shells to be beautiful objects from nature, and have photographed over 180 of them over the years. Those picture can be seen in my creatively titled Shells album, if you like that sort of thing.
Model is the Fantastic Seraya taken at my small studio space in Nottingham! Strobist Info: Lencarta SF 300 through bowens wafer softbox camera right, Lencarta EP 300 left for fill and a Lecarta EP 300 with background reflector behind model for Halo.
Ewelina and Chris, at a group shoot at NAS studio (now defunct), Basingstoke, in Hampshire.
Lit with a large softbox feathering from the top right, a grid to the left (to Ewelina's back), and a snoot with a red gel on the backdrop. Shot with a Nikon D7000 and a Nikkor AF Zoom 28-100mm f/3.5-5.6G lens, and processed in GIMP and Photoscape.
"Want to do a mad scientist photo?" I asked my niece knowing full well she'd jump at the chance. Some planning (it's amazing just how many different and odd bottles my wife has around the house!), mixing of water and food colouring, finding an appropriate book, getting the smoke machine up and running, and placing out flashes combined to this final result. My niece - and I - love it! Should say the table we used is our coffee table from the living room. To raise it up we placed it on two dining room chairs. Big shout out to my daughter on smoke machine duty. It's never easy knowing what your dad wants with the smoke but you read my mind. Just like your mother lol!
Strobist info: Three flashes were used. A Godox AD200 was placed above camera left in a gridded softbox with a green gel, pointing straight down. The second AD200 was placed directly behind the model in a round silver reflector to back light the smoke. Also a green gel was used for this. The final light was a simple Nissin Di700a flashgun placed (with orange gel) in the lantern to the right. The two AD200s were triggered by wireless remote with the Nissin set in slave mode.
I brought this shell back from Baja California Mexico, and it's been sitting out in the garden for the last six years. I brought it inside to photograph this afternoon because it's raining today, which is a rather rare event in San Diego County.
Lighting: Placed on a piece of black Perspex, and then lit with a Yongnuo manual flash in an 8.6 inch Lastolite softbox positioned at camera right and just out of the frame. Fill light is from a hand held mirror at camera left.
Other plants, flowers, fruit or thingys that I've photographed using strobes can be seen in my Strobe Lit Objects set. For each image in the set, and there are over 1900 of them, I describe how I set up the lighting for that particular shot. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157628079460544/
Other shells that I've photographed can be seen in my creatively named Shell album, and there are over 200 of them.

I know, I know... it's pathetic. But I was all out of ideas, and I went to the trouble of shooting it - so thought I may as well upload it...
It worked better in my head :-)

Part of my series "My World, my Studio".
There are things I love about shooting in the studio. Having complete control over lighting, pure backgrounds, focus on my subject. But dang, they can get a little boring. In this series I am taking everything I love about the studio and bringing it into everything I love about shooting on location.

#154/365 I know another coffee themed shot. Got home late from work and was running low on ideas. I like this mickey mug...not sure why I didn't think of it when doing the cookie splash shot. If you don't recognize the song, it is from the cartoon the Flintstones. Check out the Frente cover if you get a chance. Lighting is wierd on this..the cup looks fake for some reason...it was a rushed setup...sue me...well no don't sue me. Scold me?

I wouldn't dare eat them because I know nothing about which fungi are edible. But they smell delicious! Do you see the strand of spider silk stretching from the right-most mushroom to the large one in the center? It was quite dark when I made this photo just minutes before a thunderstorm.

Self portrait created for club competition entitled "proverbs and sayings". This is a composite of 4 images (I hope you don't really think I have an egg inside my head!).
1) Me with spoon in setting
2) Setting without me
3) Close up of egg and yolk using exactly the same lighting set-up
4) Close up of top of egg upturned using same lighting set up.
These 4 layers were then intertwined in Photoshop CS2 mainly using layer masks with a few additional bits of jiggery pokery.
I tried using my 17-55mm lens first but just couldn't get the angle I wanted so used my Sigma 10-20mm lens to achieve the results I wanted.
Strobist information (see set up in other photo farm5.static.flickr.com/4072/4435115174_8cc50208a5_b.jpg (not sure how I link this properly) SB800 Manual mode in 24inch softbox high camera left attached using 10m cable to camera. This then triggered SB600 low camera right also set to manual mode also in 24 inch softbox.
