Our only remaining choice is whether we carry on business as usual and face catastrophic societal breakdown, (from sustained food shortages and/or energy outages, for example), or whether we consciously effect an energy descent in parallel with the rapid expansion of local food production. - Rupert Read

Elizabeth Bennet is the protagonist and main character in Jane Austen's novel, "Pride and Prejudice." Elizabeth is a bright, witty, and independent-minded woman who challenges the societal expectations of her time. She is the second oldest daughter of the Bennet family, and although she is not as beautiful as her older sister Jane, she is known for her intelligence, humor, and strong will.

Sunrises are something very special to me, something magical. And not only when they appear in the form of angel wings on an old willow tree.

Every sunrise is a small new beginning, an opportunity to reorient, realign or maybe even reinvent yourself.

Of course, this is so much easier said (or written) than actually done. Because each of us is in our deep orbits, surrounded by walls made up of societal norms and expectations directed at us. The worst of these are usually our own expectations of ourselves.

But it doesn't have to be total overthrow. Be aware of where you want to go and who you want to be every day and always hold on to it. That alone will change your path.

And if you're thrown back once, it's not so bad. After all, tomorrow is another sunrise.

The lonely road or the path less taken is usually where I head in most situations there are enough lemmings in the world to take up my slack of non-conformity and I am comfortable being on the outside looking in as an individual, that being said I have no problem falling in line where needed societally when it make sense.

Kinderdijk after the park closes becomes this hauntingly beautiful landscape photographers dream and if you are lucky enough you are rewarded with magnificent skies to go with the scenery if you are not you will have to create what you need.

In the 13th century the locals in this low lying area tried to make a go of it between two rivers, coming from a flood plain area in my home province I know that these areas are sometimes the most fertile due to the flood waters depositing nutrient rich silt onto the crop land but you need a strategy to keep yourself dry.

The locals flood strategy was to create a series of dikes, channels and sluices to protect their houses but still flood the farmlands with fertilizer and this sufficed until the 18th century when the earth works were failing rather than rebuild the labor intensive dike system new technology was applied, the windmill, thus Kinderdijk the park was born

Tribute | God Save This Queen by Bimini Bon Boulash

Ok, ok, I'll come to grips with the fact that I'm a super fan. It's not every day you get to witness beautiful, intelligent, woke humans of this calibre. Creative beings like Bimini give me hope for our future, that we'll be able to move throughout life expressing ourselves and exploring opportunities without the crushing weight of societal norms and constructed idealism.

Please Cry/ Bitte Lachen The Neue Nationalgalerie presents Barbara Kruger's first institutional solo exhibition in Berlin. The American conceptual artist has developed a site-specific text installation for the Neue Nationalgalerie’s upper-level exhibition hall, making use of the entire space. The work seeks to engage visitors in public discussion about political and social topics.

In an expansive text installation, Barbara Kruger combines her own texts with quotes by three authors ‒ George Orwell, James Baldwin and Walter Benjamin ‒ whose writings each address major political issues: the violence of totalitarian states, the mechanisms behind societal discrimination and the dangers of biased historiography.

Through the stark graphic impact of her texts, reduced to just three colours (black, white and red), Kruger succeeds in introducing her own artistic language into Mies van der Rohe’s massive building. Aside from the topicality of the texts and their subject matter, the invitation extended to Barbara Kruger to develop this work also pays homage to her outstanding artistic contributions, whose feminist and political approaches have strongly influenced the art of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

Source: smb.museum

Full moon night on Koh Yao Yai in the winter of 2016. Wonderful memories of a 6 weeks Thailand trip.

Hello dear photographers and friends of my short stories,

I see no other possibility. We have to stop 2017. I have the impression that it has become increasingly established and has gained more and more power over the year. Of course, there is a lot of experience behind it, but sometimes I personally had the impression that there was a certain amount of narrow-mindedness here. What use are the conservative structures that are supposed to secure the status when innovations increasingly fall by the wayside? In addition, it is also called "new brooms turn out well" and so we should in the new year quietly be a bit braver and give the 2018 a chance. What we need are innovative, dynamic concepts that help us to consider societal change without simply accepting the loss of social moral values. Now I do not want to continue this here, even though the lure is very large. I only say: Dear people, and I mean all the Flickr photographers and lovers of my short stories, but also everyone else. Let's say goodbye to 2017 together this year and open the way for a year 2018. And don’t forget. Support yourself. Also in the spirit of love. Happy 2018!

Any other T. Rex fans out there? Ride a White Swan by T. Rex is one of my fave songs of theirs.

I have a very wide and varied taste in music, but I do have a bit of a penchant for 60's/70's British bands. Think Yardbirds, Who, Cream, The Animals, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Kinks, T. Rex, Queen, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Slade, The Sweet etc.

Fun fact #1

Swan was T. Rex's first significant hit single all the way back in 1970 & helped shape the glam rock era. From 1970 to 1973, T. Rex were extremely popular in the UK, with a run of eleven top ten singles, four of which reached number one.

Fun fact #2

Google says "Ride a White Swan” is a song that encourages individuality, self-expression, and the pursuit of personal freedom. With its enchanting lyrics and dreamlike imagery, it invites the listener to embark on a journey of self-discovery and exploration. It is a timeless reminder to embrace our uniqueness, let go of societal expectations, and ride the waves of life with grace and courage. And here I was thinking it was just a catchy, breezy little number!

Have a great week everyone!

Holi is often celebrated through community events, where many people from all RELIGIOUS BACKGROUNDS come together for music, dance, and food. These events can be large or small, but they emphasize the spirit of unity.

Holi truly exemplifies the strength of community, breaking down societal divisions and celebrating unity through shared joy, color, and culture. It’s a visual and symbolic representation of what it means to be together, to celebrate life, and to foster a sense of belonging.

Some might think that this title is a good description of what I’ve done with the processing here. But shucks, when we're stuck at home, we gotta do somethin' to stay busy, and foolin' around with photos is one way to do that.

Anyway, I prefer to think of this image as a metaphor for what all of our brave doctors, nurses, hospital personnel and first responders are doing on a daily basis--heading straight into the storm to meet vital societal needs despite the danger swirling around them. A heartfelt thanks to all of them for their over-the-top service during this time of crisis.

Historically, the building’s function was to promote business activities in the city – it was a place for gathering of traders and shippers for many centuries. The soul of the Black Heads house was its active and joyful "blackheads", who, as young and unmarried traders, were known for their temperament and enthusiasm for the organization of various celebrations and events. Their enthusiasm transformed this building into one of the main cultural venues in the city, which set the pulse of Riga’s societal scene.

Everything you do has an impact. Who you are – that you are – actually matters. In an interconnected world (the only kind we have), our actions and the actions of others are inextricably linked- we are always and forever in a dance of mutual influence with those with whom we directly and indirectly participate. It is the unavoidable reality of being social creatures, only magnified by an ever-increasingly complex and interwoven societal structure. We matter to each other.

This striking graffiti, captured on Melbourne’s iconic Hosier Street, features vibrant street art with bold colors and evocative imagery. The murals display a mix of faces, a demonic figure, and a skull adorned with a rose, paired with thought-provoking slogans like “NOT THE FLOWERS WE WANT.” Hosier Street, renowned for its dynamic street art scene, is a canvas for local and international artists. It holds cultural significance as a hub for creative expression, attracting tourists and art lovers who admire its ever-evolving visual landscape that pushes boundaries and challenges societal norms.

The scenic wooden tobacco sheds with louvered sides that dot country roads in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts in towns as Whately, Deerfield and Hadley have been an important characteristic of the New England Country side. Long preserved they are currently now in danger of being eliminated. I took this photo several weeks ago and last week this very same shed has shown signs of being dismantled.

The 1840’s saw a booming industry for tobacco products. These structures served a valuable purpose in their time for the local economy. Given the Tobacco industry’s decline these structures relevance have grown to be more about the historical character of the region rather than their function as storage for tobacco set for market. Today they are no longer used. Although many other barns have been converted into homes or other uses, the problem with recycled tobacco sheds is their characteristic louvered side slats that were designed to create air flow around the tobacco hung to dry for two months a year.

Even though I can empathize with the prevailing societal taboos which have emerged concerning tobacco use, I still am sad to see the tobacco sheds gradually disappearing from the landscape. I have several works in my photo gallery that depict these wonderful structures. This is one instance in which progress is I fear misdirected at least from a visual and aesthetic viewpoint.

Human morality and submission to God’s law are entirely different in principle, though they may appear to be similar in outward appearance. Human morality arises out of culture and family training and is based on what is proper and expected in the society we live in. It has nothing to do with God except to the extent that godly people have influenced that society. Submission to God’s law arises out of a love for God and a grateful response to His grace and is based on a delight in His law as revealed in Scripture. When the societal standard of morality varies from the law of God written in Scripture, we then see the true nature of human morality. We discover that it is just as hostile to the law of God as is the attitude of the most hardened sinner. - Jerry Bridges

Bursting Through The Hedge. When I saw this sprout bursting through the top of the hedge I thought of how each of us can enter our unique path and not necessarily align with societal norms.

Here, I present an image depicting two figures, their eyes obscured by colourful bands, symbolising the concealment and censorship of their true identity and voice. The background, a vivid composition of red, green, and blue stripes, mirrors a world brimming with dynamism and diversity. The central focus on the bandaged eyes of the figures is intended to prompt the viewer to contemplate the boundaries of perception and the depth of individual identities. This image is a visual reflection on resistance to conformity and societal norms, inspired by the energy and message of Patti Smith's song "Rock'n'Roll Nigger."

“…farming is part of the whole societal structure not just another job by which a person makes a living. Therefore, what happens out in the countryside in one century invariably affects the cities in the next century and often there is not even that much time gap. Food is the common denominator of life; producing food is part of the biological and cultural as well as economic fabric of a civilization…

it is a fact that a strong and vital urban society has always been supported by a strong and vital rural society. General decline in the Roman empire, the British empire and the Russian Communist empire paralleled if not followed the decline in rural communities. The same thing is happening in the United States… only we don’t realize it yet.”

Channel, 2004 by Liz Magor

Bronze

Over the past five decades, Liz Magor has developed a world-renowned practice that contemplates everyday items such as clothing, packaging, labels, furniture, twigs, branches, and tree stumps. Throughout our lives we are surrounded with ‘stuff’ both natural and fabricated, often forming complex relationships with them. Magor’s work considers what these relationships say about our personal desires and insecurities, as well as the wider pressures of societal, economic, and other outside forces that inform our attachments to things. Often her objects become subtly altered through processes of casting, remodelling, or resituating, so that the boundary between the real and the simulated is no longer clear.

Placed in a wooded area of Gairloch Gardens, Channel is a tree stump cast in bronze that seems at first glance to be entirely harmonious with its natural surroundings. A closer look, however, reveals two eye-like openings. This anthropomorphic twist catches us off guard, and reveals our profoundly unstable relationship to the things we think we know.

The world is in turmoil, that's for sure. But in this moment just before darkness falls a glimmer of light. A lighthouse enables us to get our bearings. To know where to go to avoid the rocky reefs that will surely sink our boats.

Today, more than ever in my lifetime, we need to get our societal bearings again. When all around is sinking sand, when the tempests of life become overwhelming, we need to lift our eyes to the hills, "from whence cometh our help" (as a very old Hebrew worship text says).

Whatever faith you have today, you will need it in the days ahead. There is a Light in the Darkness. There is an inner peace that is true tranquility.

Another victim of societal inequality, this guy was soon to be aggressively harangued by his 'mate' who wanted repayment for whatever it was he owed - I would imagine it may have been drug related. I hung around long enough to make sure he was okay and then went about my privileged life leaving the 'lad' to get on with his own.

"'The 'Debris' (middle) by Gönül Nuhoğlu explores the chaotic effects of the concept of private property, where ownership feels like a prison sentence. It reflects a broader societal decline at a time when empathy, compassion and a sense of shared humanity are fading.

'The Ship of Fools' (left and right) depicts the conflict between political power and personal freedom. Rulers label their order 'reasonable' and the opposition 'insane'. As power shifts, the labels reverse; today's fool becomes tomorrow's expert. Only

by seizing power can rebels prove their sanity, continuing an endless historical cycle. In our tiny domains, where power changes fast, we create an army of fools, ourselves included, ultimately trapping us all."

Paris during the Belle Époque era, which roughly spans from the late 19th century to the outbreak of World War I in 1914, was a time of cultural flourishing, artistic innovation, and societal transformation.

Paris was the cultural capital of the world. It attracted artists, writers, intellectuals, and musicians from all over the globe. The city was bustling with creativity, with renowned figures such as Claude Monet, Auguste Rodin, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and many others contributing to the flourishing art scene.

Under the direction of Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann in the mid-19th century, Paris underwent a massive urban renewal project. Wide boulevards, grand squares, and uniform facades transformed the cityscape, giving rise to the iconic Parisian architecture seen today.

LIU Wei, plastic bags (2017), 120x240 cm

LIU Wei repurposes everyday materials to explore perception, societal contradictions and environmental impact by transforming post-industrial objects – especially plastic bags – into intricate wire mesh artworks. Glossy, vibrant and cheap but, simultaneously, toxic plastic bags embody both convenience and ecological harm. Through months of meticulous labour, LIU reshapes the waste materials into luminous forms, questioning whether discarded remnants of modern life can find redemption through artistic reconfiguration.

His work invites reflection on the long-term consequences of industrialisation, as the PVC in his objects takes a millennium to degrade. While these artworks will ultimately vanish, their message endures, offering a striking meditation on waste, permanence and the role of art in confronting crises.

Hello.

My name is Nevereux. Except, most likely, it isn’t.

Profoundly troubled and profoundly untroubled, I’m wearing Deadwool even when I don’t.

I’m the smartphonist who thinks that the world was born with my iPhone.

I’m looking for a world with less labels and more peace, civil rights and efforts for conservation of the natural resources. Except, most likely, it doesn’t exist.

Ppl in power told me that they’d keep us safe and there’d be no more wars with our natural enemies, whether human or non-human. Except, most likely, they lied.

I Googled and I found out that the world outside our skin is as much ourselves as the world inside. But peace can be made only by those who are peaceful, and love can be shown only by those who love. No work of love will flourish out of guilt, fear, or hollowness of heart, just as no valid plans for the future can be made by those who have no capacity for living now.

In fact, where is everybody?

This was my life. Except, most likely, it wasn’t.

Nitroglobus Gallery is having me for the 2nd time with “A Beautiful Collapse”, a new whole aesthetic and postapocalyptic collection about societal unraveling and the sharp decline of our general values. It provides a series of polaroids meant for a supreme entity to understand humankind and what led us to extinction.

There also will be a 3D artwork by Kaiju Kohime in the same spirit, called CRISP, and an opening party tomorrow, @ 12pm SLT, music selection by DJ Ferdy.

I hope to see you in the foreseeable future.

South America, Brasil, São Paulo, USP, FAU, Class room (cut from B&T)

The urban planners I mentioned in the previous post, were probably educated at the University of São Paulo’s FAU (Faculdade of Arquitetura e Urbanismo). This post shows a classroom of this institution.

The nature of the closed box of the brutalist superstructure, where the sunlight can only enter from above, is clearly on display here.

The FAU was designed by J.B. Vilanova Artigas and is a prime example of Paulista Brutalism, the second phase of 60s Brazilian Modernism. The design started in 1961 and was completed in 1969 under dictatorial rule. The absence of windows on this level of the building is meant to express 'society's antagonistic nature and conditions'. The use of brutalist, untreated concrete, had to do with this too ánd had another reason - Vilanova, also the dean of the faculty, aimed to use the poor and largely untrained local workforce for emancipatory purposes, to provide them with a job and train them on the job.

Vilanova Artigas wrote the following about the building with its well-designed spatial flow (ramps instead of staircases, lots of glass in the internal walls) : "a spatialization of democracy, in dignified spaces, without front door ... where all activities are valid."

The military coup of 1964 ending Brazilian democracy proved that the building wasn’t able to shield the institution from authoritarian rule - alas architecture alone neither can bring on societal change nor can function as a buffer, cushioning the full brunt of revolutionary change.

So Vilanova Artigas was sacked by the military regime (and later exiled) and the design of the building was changed to monitor the movement and activities of students better – altering the nature of the building from an instrument of democracy to a repressive panopticon.

This is number 27 of Enchanted Concrete: my album dedicated to Brazilian Modernism .

On the 22nd of August 1900 Glasgow's most famous son Charles Rennie Mackintosh married his sweetheart Margaret Macdonald in St Augustine's Episcopal Church in Dumbarton.

The marriage between 32-year-old Mackintosh and 35-year-old Margaret is believed to have caused considerable consternation at the time among Glasgow's societal circles - especially because Mackintosh had previously been engaged to marry his employer's sister, Jessie Keppie.

Margaret and Charles were not only in a relationship on a romantic level but also on a professional and artistic one, and their work together would see them reach their respective creative zeniths, with their mutual love manifesting itself in their marvellously original furniture, buildings and interiors.

An old iron fire escape and ghost sign stand as silent witnesses to a storied past. Relics of a bygone era. Such clues are not just a field of study for professional historians but rather reminders of the fleeting nature of societal assumptions and the lifestyles that are thereby created. Monuments more instructive than a cemetery. A dying town and its founders still speak.

Hyde Park is one of London’s oldest and arguably Britain’s most famous park.

It has a long and varied history that has seen continual change and evolution in its landscape and use.

From the site of a monastery to royal hunting ground and from private royal grounds to one of the first public parks for the upper classes; some of the most significant moments in British cultural and societal history have involved Hyde Park. Through the centuries of change, the trees have evolved with the landscape and are a key part of its history.

Description of 'Through Their Eyes' by the artist:

Women have long been an integral part of society, but their experiences and perspectives are often ignored or undervalued. When we look at the world through women's eyes, we see a complex and multifaceted reality.

In many societies, women are expected to conform to certain standards of behavior and appearance,

which can be restrictive and limiting. These societal expectations can have an impact on women's self-esteem, confidence and sense of worth.

Women often face a double standard, where they are judged more harshly than men for the same behaviors or actions. Despite these challenges, women have shown incredible resilience and strength,

and have made significant contributions to society in a variety of fields.

Through women's eyes we can better understand the challenges they face, the unique perspectives they bring and the importance of promoting gender equality. By recognizing and addressing these challenges, and promoting women's unique perspectives and contributions, we can work towards a more just and equitable society for all.

This is my second time on flickr, I started back in 2012,

I needed a change so I started anew, clean slate new beginning, today, I am pausing and reflecting on my jounery

Being a submissive, I would say authenticity reigns supreme. It is not merely about surrendering control, but about embracing the true essence of who I am. I do what makes me up, delving deep into the recesses of my soul to uncover the raw, unfiltered truth that lies within. It is a journey marked by vulnerability, courage, and an unwavering commitment to self-discovery.

There have been moments when doubt has clouded my path, casting shadows upon my journey, times I felt very isolated and alone, its not easy to pack a punch, as an introvert with a small circle. Society's whispers of judgment and misunderstanding have remained with me, threatening to derail me from the correct course. Yet, in the face of adversity, I have found strength in the power of my authentic voice.

I tell my story not as a mere recollection of events, being in a long term submssive relationship, and engading ofthen in S&M play, I find is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit- my spirt. It is a story woven with threads of passion, desire, and unwavering determination. Through the art of photo stories, I reclaim my narrative, casting aside the shackles of societal expectations to embrace the true essence of my submissive nature.

thank you for 3000 followers, my story continues...

Keith Haring (May 4, 1958 – February 16, 1990) was an American artist whose pop art emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the 1980s. His animated imagery has become a widely recognized visual language. Much of his work includes sexual allusions that turned into social activism by using the images to advocate for safe sex and AIDS awareness.

His later work often conveyed political and societal themes— anti-crack, anti-apartheid, safe sex, homosexuality and AIDS—through his own iconography. (From Wikipedia)

"One love

one blood

one life

you got to do what you should

one life

with each other

sisters, brothers

one life, but we're not the same

we got to carry each other, carry each other

one"

Though for the lack of provisions I could have stayed in that forest the entire day and probably all night, and maybe the next day as well, before capitulating to societal expectation to rejoin, what those funny lifeforms call, the human race. It felt so nice to even fantasise about being in the wild woods, away from people, cut off and knowing I could be in there for hours, before meeting another person. I’d probably hide behind a tree or in the undergrowth until they pass, and yes, I have done that before.

I hope everyone is well and so as always, thank you! 😊

🎄The Christmas season, often celebrated as the "festival of love," paradoxically brings with it deep feelings of loneliness for many people. The societal pressure to be happy and surrounded by family and friends can make being alone particularly painful. It's a widespread phenomenon that affects people of all ages and walks of life.

Allow yourself to be weak, but then get up and keep going...somehow. 💖

Berlin: Connection Tunnel between Reichstag (German Parliament) und Parliament offices.

Tomorrow there will be general elections for the federal parliament - the Bundestag. -in Germany. The old government stays in power until a new one is elected by the parliament. I will not be easy to form a new government as we experience fundamental shifts in the voter's preference for parties. It will take time to establish a new coalition from maybe three parties. So we are in a political transition zone but also in a societal.
