Jaspyr climbed up onto the roof of one of the old byres…Here, he is trying to work out how to get back down. Safely.

Years ago, when he was just a kitten, this big eejit found himself on the very apex of one of the byre roofs. He proceeded to slide straight down, with his front feet splayed, like snowploughing skis, in a foiled attempt to halt his downward plummet. He (and I) got a real fright. Fortunately, he was perfectly fine, if a little shaken and hiding under my bed. Very rare to see him on any of the roofs…

This is the colour version of a previously posted monochrome image.. While we continued our long journey along the Northfjords of Iceland we had this encounter and I felt an intense pang of envy. What a pleasure it must be to ride a snow plough in that place :D

They were the stars of our winter journey to the Lofoten. With every day and night a new thick blanket of fresh snow adding to the previous one, it were the regular and frequent journeys of those mighty snow ploughs cleaning the roads for us. Thanks guys! You are fab!!

A comment to one of my model train photos (many thanks David) reminded me of this set. I woke up this morning and realised I actually had the set myself, bought a few years ago. I remembered where it was and took the photo.

The traffic sign from the other day, minus the snow covering.

Image from Jan 2019, taken on a cold morning after a night of heavy snowfall, best conditions!

I think the local farmer used this tractor to keep the village roads of Flakstad clear of snow drifts.

Each winter Bastian does a great job clearing the snow...

The first of many shots of this working over the last three weeks or so, whilst I residing up norf. This is one of my favourites because of the dramatic lighting and I was the only one there to record the event, except for a friendly local resident with her collie dog who had been taking an interest in the workings. A bit of a flap waiting for the shot too, as the sun was about to die and the train seemed to be at the station for longer than usual. Large logo 47593 'Galloway Princess' powers away from Settle working the final train of the weekend, the 1Z46 17.58 Appleby to Skipton 'Staycation Express'. Oh to have this loco with snowploughs.

Thanks to Mick Page for the location and Mr C & Mr S for making the shot possible.

The main event, bringing out the crowds from far afield, was the testing of the snowploughs held in Fairwater Yard with two tractors. There was a bit of a delay in departure apparently due to not being able to access one of the ploughs at the eastern end and they ended up going up to Weston Super Mare rather than reversing at Highbridge Loop.

On their return journey, 37601 'Perseus' and 37419 'Carl Haviland 1954 - 2012' approaches Creech St Michael with ploughs ADB965223 and ADB965235 working the 7Z21 11.22 departure. This was 31 minutes late here, which, had it been on time, would have resulted in a duller shot. 5/2/2023

I was looking at an old family album and there was this photo from the late 1950's showing how footpaths were cleared in a village.

The lady is my Aunty and the lad is Tony. The photo was badly creased so I have restored it and hope you enjoy seeing a blast from the past

Not the best image I've ever uploaded but I figure after almost 48 years it's carries a bit of interest.

The view is from Crewe station looking towards the diesel depot (Crewe South in old money) and captures just a few of the tasty morsels to be found in the area at the time. Prime interest is in green-livered, and as yet un-renumbered, Sulzer type 2 unit 5035, and the rather posher rail-blue example behind, unit 24042.

In the distance can be seen a class 47, class 50 (between duties on the northern stretch of the WCML), and a class 40. Note too the breakdown crane, and the snowplough just behind it.

This slide is number 38 in Box 1, so very much an early effort. For anyone interested, 'Tiger Feet' by Mud was UK No.1 at the time - I can hear it now!

Almost out of time with the sun, here we see OBB Railjet 1locomotive 1116 242 passing in front of a group of mountains with snow spray working RJ862 to Bregenz. The train was captured in Langkampfen on the cold winters day of the 6/1/17.

In the morning of 20 October 2019, 218 424 and 416 with their EC 191 to Munich main station rushed through the tranquil parish of Wohmbrechts in the Westallgäu. Meanwhile stationed in Mühldorf, the leading 218 424 carries the snowplough with the yellow tip typical of the depot Kempten.

These poles get normally covered with snow during the winter, they are markings for the guys with the snowploughs.

Its sure easy to get lost when all is white.

Change position and 40 minutes later 'Mr. T' brings the return working back from Chester.

There is a section of road north of us called the Ferndale "flats". It is notorious for having white outs at that specific site when the rest of the way is clear up the Peninsula. Snow drifts accumulate pretty quickly on the highway in the right conditions and even the snowplough can't keep up until the winds die down.

A couple of shots of the snow from a short walk around one area of Jersey City yesterday.

Took a couple of hours to shovel away the snow around our place, the big problem being there has been so much snow so far this year that the piles are so big thats theres very little space left to move snow to

Seems most here in NJ and NY have had enough of snow already

Saw the pulmonologist today and did a whole bunch of breathing tests on ths fancy machine which informed the Dr I do indeed have Emphysema and unlikely not just mild but the top end of Moderate, which wasnt I wanted to hear of course, but with staying off smoking and taking meds each day should be able to be contained at this level so although not great news isnt really bad news

Still pretty slack on Flickr and likely to be for another week or three, but I will return :)

Charrue is a French Canadian common word for a snowplow (also spelled snow plow, snowplough or snow plough) which is a vehicle for removing snow and sometimes ice. It is common in Canada where we regularly receive large amounts of snow every year to use specially-designed winter service vehicles whose primary purpose is to move snow and otherwise improve roadway conditions in cold weather. Modern plows may include a great deal of technology to make the job—and staying on the road—easier, such as GPS receivers, heads-up displays, and infrared cameras.

BTW....other french names are déneigeuse or chasse-neige.

This was 7Z36, the 09.39 Eastriggs MOD sidings to Doncaster West Yard, day one of a two day move to get independent snowplough ADB965209 to Norwich.

Getting ready for the big freeze Crewe Gresty Bridge based Network Rail Beilhack snowploughs have a run to Chester and back to check the roller bearings and brakes etc are still in order for when the call comes. Northern Belle livery 57305 312 take the honours for this test run.

I left early. I noticed a few sleaty flakes in the dark. Out onto the M6, traction control light warning me several times I was aquaplaning. And round onto the M56 where the rain gradually faded but only until it ran into the A55. Where I passed no less than four snowploughs frantically gritting, orange flashing lights straining my eyes against the black outside. And then, ahead of the snowploughs, I came up into the whiteness behind red lights and slotted into a convoy of vehicles ahead over the top and down the other side.

And then the rain waited until I arrived at the beach. Where it rained and rained. I made it to the lighthouse and went down on the beach below it. And then the squall hit. The wind went from about 30mph to 60mph and I sheltered below the rocky mount the lighthouse stands on. Within five minutes it passed over and I could suddenly see the mountains on the Lleyn peninsula. But it remained freezing and so windy...… I just didn't notice my exposure was set at +1 stop instead of -1. And so I have the resultant faded image. I'm just whispering it, but I love it. It's a special effect!

7Z41 0950 Derby RTC to Norwich Station snowplough move (ploughs are ADB965219 and ADB965208)

After my disastrous mishap at Garsdale a few days prior of the same pairing with a similar snowplouigh move, I was relieved to capture it again tonight. Here is 47832 & 57601 making a brief crew change at Preston with two independent snowploughs bound for Fairwater having been maintained and stored at Eastriggs M.O.D.

The fog was extremely thick here so it's taken a lot of work to bring some contrast back, hence the somewhat washed appearance.

Oh no

no playing in the snow today, son
