The Cackling Goose and Snow Goose migration is on! This image was taken in the Vancouver Lake Lowlands when we had sunshine. A Red-tailed Hawk flew over the flocks of Cackling Geese and Snow Geese and they took to the air. The sounds and sight of so many Geese is amazing.

Had the chance to drive through an area I call the Snow Geese corridor and came across a pond with a pretty sizable group. Kind of proves the old saying about geese... :)

Trying to practice my flight shot photography with Snow Geese. Thousands are now back in Richmond giving me lots of opportunity. They are striking and I never tire of seeing them every winter.

Les grands vents d'hier n'auront pas que causé des pannes d'électricité, déraciné des arbres etc. .. Ils auront aussi coupé court aux couleurs automnales !

The high winds of yesterday will not only have caused power outages, uprooted trees, etc. .. They will also cut short the fall colors!

From my archive. More pictures in comment box.

Many thanks to all those who view, fav or comment my pictures. I very much appreciate it.

Something like 40,000 snow geese winter at Quivira National Wildlife Refuge in Kansas. It's quite a sight to see them all in air at once - this is only a small part of the flock.

Sortie de famille automnale !

Autumnal family outing!

A very large flock of snow geese today - beautiful - but also reminds one of the movie - The Birds

It's hard to describe what its like to stand near 30,000+ snow geese when they all decide that its time to fly. One second there are thousands of noisy squawking geese sitting on the water. Then the sound starts to ramp up as they all make noise together. As the decibel levels start to climb a different sound starts as 60,000 wings start to flap. Within 10 seconds, the water is empty and it feels like you're in a tornado with thousands of birds swirling around you.

There were well over 100,000 snow geese today at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area near Lebanon, PA. I was standing next to about 1/3 of them when they decided to fly this morning. Here are just a few mid-takeoff.

“Are we going to retweet that stuff?” says another Goose.

Minnesota is on the migration path of snow geese, and I found about 1000 of them.

Anser caerulescens. Very localized, but abundant where they occur, Snow Geese typically are seen in large numbers or not at all. Included under this heading is the "Blue Goose," long considered a separate species, now known to be only a color morph of the smaller race of Snow (Lesser Snow Goose).

Pour perdre de l'altitude rapidement, les oies cassent leur vol et virevoltent à la manière d'une feuille morte

To lose altitude quickly, geese break their flight and twirl like a dead leaf

As the sun begins to rise Snow Geese begin to take off, to feed in local fields. A remarkable sight to see and hear as the early morning sky is filled with hundreds/thousands of birds.

The cold front that came brought with it lots of snow geese. Just outside St.Albert there must have been close to 1000 snow geese in the field.

Lots of snow geese and a few white fronted geese in the water.

A few of the snow geese there that day lifting off the water about 1/2 mile away on the far side of the refuge with one of many muskrat mounds in the lower part of the photo.

Only about 123,000 migrating snow geese the day I was there which was down about 30,000 from the previous week. Low numbers for this time of year. Still fun to watch and hear. The ones there were scattered in several locations and most on the far sides of the refuge. Not as much water with the moderate drought there. Hoping more arrive, but if not, the big migration is the return in the Spring. Not happy with the quality of these photos but saving to albums.

UPDATE 11-23-20: Snow geese numbers have dropped to only 102,000 now so it may be next Spring before numbers go back up. Still hoping. Eagle count went up from 56 to 122 and trumpeter swans from 558 to 642, so that is good news!

Guess what happens when a Bald Eagle flies over a flock of 35,000 snow geese?

The most difficult in flight photos you will make is when they are coming right at you.

Cloudy today but birding I will go. Probably more seeing than shooting.
