The tree had been unidentified by me, people suggested to wait until the leaves came. 3 suggested that it was a snakebark maple so that is what I am going to call it unless I am told different

Our Snake-bark Maple (Acer davidii) tree trunk is discolouring, getting much darker below the first branches and with lesions further up. Is this normal?

I bought this tree as a novelty about 10 years ago. It had a great base and reminded me of the way a Pond cypress grows in the wild. I loves being in this shallow pot and grows very aggressively. I usually leaf prune it 2 or 3 times a year.

This afternoon a few of us had a walk round with Alex, the Plant Heritage Officer, identifying some of the interesting trees in the garden. And a few other plants along the way!

 

Champion Trees of Britain and Ireland are the tallest or broadest of their kind ... Highdown Gardens has one in their collection.
