Day 26 of my Fun-A-Day project. I'll be documenting, studying, and/or tending to plants in and around our home every day in January:

I just love this plant. I really do, and feel that it doesn't benefit from its common name of 'mother-in-law's tongue'. It's also known as 'snake plant' which it sort of resembles, so I'll give that a pass. This specimen has been with my lovely husband for longer than we've been together, so that is a long, long time. Not twenty years, but getting close! I've successfully divided it to the shade garden. Although the transplanted bit hasn't grown much, it's alive and looking good. The original potted plant has bloomed on numerous occasions, and as the blossoms are hard to spot, I've been left wondering where that tropical fragrance is coming from. I recognize it now, but it was quite the pleasant surprise early on.

Abbreviated info via Wikipedia:

Sansevieria trifasciata is a species of Sansevieria, native to tropical west Africa from Nigeria east to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is an evergreen herbaceous perennial plant forming dense stands, spreading by way of its creeping rhizome, which is sometimes above ground, sometimes underground. Its stiff leaves grow vertically from a basal rosette. Mature leaves are dark green with light gray-green cross-banding and usually range between 70–90 cm in length and 5–6 cm in width.

It is commonly called the snake plant because of the shape of its leaves, or mother-in-law's tongue because of their sharpness. In Brazil, it is commonly known as espada-de-são-jorge (sword-of-saint-george). Due to its blade-like shape, it is commonly associated with Ogun, the orisha of war (usually associated with Saint George), and is used in rituals to remove the evil eye. In Africa, the plant is used as a protective charm against evil or bewitchment.

Like some other members of its genus, S. trifasciata yields bowstring hemp, a strong plant fiber once used to make bowstrings.

It is now used predominantly as an ornamental plant, outdoors in warmer climates, and indoors as a houseplant in cooler climates. It is popular as a houseplant as it is tolerant of low light levels and irregular watering; during winter it needs only one watering every couple of months. It will rot easily if overwatered. A study by NASA found that it is one of the best plants for improving indoor air quality by passively adsorbing toxins such as nitrogen oxides and formaldehyde.

Numerous cultivars have been selected, many of them for variegated foliage with yellow or silvery-white stripes on the leaf margins. Popular cultivars include 'Compacta', 'Goldiana', 'Hahnii', 'Laurentii', 'Silbersee', and 'Silver Hahnii'.

It can be propagated by cuttings or by dividing the rhizome. The first method has the disadvantage that the variegation is likely to be lost.

Thrilled at the explosion of little lights that have sprung up at Doncaster Shoppingtown, I immediately set out to see what bokeh I can get!

It's a pity though, that the lights aren't expansive, which meant I needed a rather small subject... ah well.

Angel's home... Transforming cinderblock rectangles into a lush and inviting environment

Many homes are like blank canvases... the right location, the right space or enough room to add to... but their potential is unrealized. Angel's home was one of those. But now, inside and out, it's a delight to the eye and the senses.

Pulling through the entrance columns into the driveway, you spontaneously draw in a deep breath and relax. Green, lush, inviting. Shadows and textures. Sculpture and the curvaceous shapes of hanging Datura Lilies. Hedges define the space and plants carry your eye up, down and around. Color, texture and surprises keep you strolling and enjoying. Palms, bromeliads, plants in ground and in pots.

Then there's the pool area which carries you from the glass-sided living room and open kitchen inside to outside. Vibrant turquoises... tile, water and tall ceramic vases. The sound of water, bamboos and palms. Decks at many levels keep the stroll exciting. Comfortable lounges, bird cages, umbrellas and flowers.

Wafting fragrances add to the intrigue. Rosy Frangipani, the source of many of the world's best perfumes, blooms in arched sprays overhead. Corn plants add their warm aroma and become part of the lush foliage that makes this home an island even though there's a close neighbor. Tall Traveler's Palms contribute to the exoticness of this unique place and link you to the sky. Their blue and white flag blossoms are an intriguing Springtime treat.

Angel's home is ideal for large gatherings, opening and expanding in all directions. There is music inside and out. His delicate lighting encourages you first to wander and explore and then settle down in a chosen comfortable spot to talk and enjoy food and drink. This is a family home and Angel's four children enjoy growing up in this beautiful, lush, sunny world.

Done in by her father's sword; her father was done in by a bolt of lightning. Venerated for centuries by artillerymen and miners. Shown here with snakeplant, aka mother-in-law's tongue, aka tiger's tail, aka espada-de-santa-barbara, aka sword.. of Saint Barbara.

The primary defense of a Gray Treefrog (and most of our other native frogs) is crypsis. In other words if the nasties can't find you they can't eat you. If a predator gets close and threatening enough that the frog starts to believe it's clever camouflage has failed, it will choose option 2, a rapid exit like we have here.

Some frogs have what are known as 'Flash Colours"- bright markings on parts of the skin that are normally hidden when at rest. Our Gray Treefrogs have yellow bits on their inner thighs and legs. This is supposed to give a predator a confusing burst of colour to help with the frogs escape. The predator is now hopefully looking for something tasty and yellow to eat, but the frog will have tucked back in it's yellow bits when it lands.

I'd like to say I have kung-fu tming, but this shot is a happy accident. He was looking cute and pretty immobile when I clicked the shutter, but I have to say I liked the result of an unsuccessful predators eye view that shows of both the flash colours and the sinewy leg muscles that drive the escape.

Goldband Sansevieria (Variegated Snake Plant) is still by far the most popular ornamental sansevieria. Amazingly, the tallest leaf seen in this image is almost 4 ft. high! Some plant information.

Friends moving away means we've inherited a "few" plants...

(Snake Plant, baby Aloes, baby Croton Petra (given away), baby Aloe (given away), baby Snake Plant (given away), baby Aloe Vera (given away), African Milk Tree, ?Philodendron? Vine, Aloe Vera, Croton Petra).

This plant gets two shovels up! Sansevieria has been mentioned before on this page as being one of the best house plants to absorb indoor toxins.

ADDITIONALLY, it is so low-maintenance even my friend Erica Hanrahan-Ball couldn't kill it. It will grow in low light house-hold conditions and will crowd comfortably into its original pot, rarely needing a re-potting. It tends to grow in proportion to its container and has a very attractive architectural form. The only mistake with this one would be to water it too much...just try to neglect it most of the time!
