This Snail Kite was from the first day of our Pantanal trip. We were all quite excited to get some photos of it and it was quite cooperative. Much to our delight, this species turned out to be one of the most common species on the trip. I found it amusing that by the time the trip concluded no one was even paying attention to these guys.

From Wiki:
Nests and forages year-round in freshwater wetlands of southern Florida, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Locally endangered species in the Florida Everglades, with a population of less than 400 breeding pairs. Research has demonstrated that water-level control in the Everglades is depleting the population of apple snails. However, this species is not generally threatened over its extensive range. it might be locally increasing in numbers, such as in Central America.
This is a gregarious bird of freshwater wetlands, forming large winter roosts. Its diet consists almost exclusively of apple snails, (especially the species Pomacea paludosa in Florida, and species of the genus Marisa). Snail kites have been observed eating other prey items in Florida, including crayfish in the genus Procambarus, crabs in the genus Dilocarcinus, black crappie, small turtles and rodents. It is believed that snail kites turn to these alternatives only when apple snails become scarce, such as during drought, but further study is needed. On 14 May 2007, a birdwatcher photographed a snail kite feeding at a red swamp crayfish farm in Clarendon County, South Carolina.
The presence of the large introduced Pomacea maculata in Florida has led the snail kites in North America to develop larger bodies and beaks to better eat the snail, a case of rapid evolution.[17] These non-native snails provide a better food source over the smaller native snails and has had a positive effect on their population

Zerene Stacker 120 subs. Two speed lights - snoot to the right and reflector bowl with grid about 30 degrees off-axis to left. The shell is 2.25 inches in greatest dimension.
We found this beautiful shell several years ago in Myakka State Park, which consists mostly of a freshwater marsh. My semi-educated guess is that this is an Apple Snail shell. The Florida apple snail is 2-3 inches in size, consistent with this specimen of 2.25 inches. There are four exotic species that are highly invasive, and are now widespread throughout freshwater ecosystems in Florida. They were introduced in the 1980s through the aquarium trade.

Photography, of a small snail, that climbed, up, a branch, of a plant, about to bloom, looking, for, a shady and humid place, where to rest. Who knows, the adventures, and obstacles, it must have, encountered, on the way, until it reached its destination.
The Everglade snail kite (Rostrhamus sociabilis) is awide-ranging New World raptor species found primarily in lowland freshwater marshes in tropical and subtropical America from Florida, Cuba, and Mexico south to Argentina and Peru. The subspecies from Florida and Cuba (Rostrhamus sociabilis plumbeus) was first listed as endangered pursuant to the Endangered Species Conservation Act in 1967. The common name used in theoriginal listing was Everglade snail kite and this remains unchanged in the official FWS Code of Federal Regulations, even though the official name for the species is now simply snail kite. The Florida population of snail kites is considered to be a single population with considerable distributional shifts. The combination of a range restricted to the watersheds of the Everglades lakes, Okeechobee and Kissimmee, and the upper St. Johns River, with a highly specific diet composed almost entirely of apple snails (Pomacea paludosa), makes the snail kites survival directly dependent on the hydrology and water quality of these watersheds. Each of these watersheds has experienced, and continues to experience, pervasive degradation due to urban development and agricultural activities.
I found this female at Joe Overstreet Landing on Lake Kissimmee in Osceola County, Florida.
This is a very young garden snail that I saw yesterday in my backyard. It brings back memories of my childhood when I used to collect them and treat them as pets.
I often find that taking my time to do a task right can produce a most pleasing outcome. Yes, having a snail's pace can be advantageous. Patience is required though! I hope that everyone has a lovely week. I plan to have one!

Juvenile Snail Kite ~ (Rostrhamus sociabilis)
A young Snail Kite comes in for a landing with a good sized Apple Snail in its beak at sunrise. Their long talons on display here make snatching large snails from the water much easier.Lots of Snail Kite photos coming - be warned!
Thanks for visiting!
