As the Kananaskis region of Alberta is often called. Also could stand for "Knockout" country, IMHO.

Sights like Mt. Nestor rising above Smuts Creek is common around every curve of the Smith-Dorien Trail thru the Spray Valley Provincial Park. Many memory cards recommended for a visit here.

Gallotia galloti palmae, in La Palma. In addition to Gallotia galloti, it is sometimes called "smut lizard". The blight lizard can reach 30 cm in length. Males are somewhat larger than females and have a blue patch on their faces. Black lizard (Gallotia galloti) The black lizard is a very abundant reptile in the Canary Islands, especially in agricultural areas and coastal scrubland. It prefers dry and sunny places, such as rocky areas, especially rock walls, and avoids the laurel forest area. It can live up to 3,000 m above sea level, so it can be found at almost any altitude. Forest roads are a favorable habitat for this species, since it also uses them to move around, as it allows it to stay in the sun during its walks. Being a poikilothermic animal (that is, cold-blooded), it requires clear places where it can warm up on the rock, until it reaches a body temperature that allows it to be active. Feeding Their diet is based on plants and insects; sometimes it eats the grapes cultivated by man, for which it is subject to persecution.

Commonwealth, Pig Tail Peak and Birdwood Mountain rising above Smuts Creek.

Was curious how the creek got it's name. It was named after a nearby peak, Mount Smuts. "Mount Smuts was named by the Interprovincial Boundary Commission in 1918 for General Jan Smuts (1870–1950). During World War I, he led the armies of South Africa against Germany, capturing German South-West Africa and commanding the British Army in East Africa in 1916-1917." Thank you Wikipedia.

I haven't shared a b/w image for awhile. Here we have Mt. Nestor rising above Smuts Creek in Kananaskis Country.

I'm a fan of grayscapes and enjoy choosing and processing images that I think work well in shades of one tone. I've long admired the works of Ansel Adams.

A boulder blocks a portion of Smuts Creek leading the eye towards Mt. Nestor in Kananaskis Country. But I also thought it anchored the foreground well, so included it.

Kananaskis Country is located West & SouthWest of Calgary and borders the town of Canmore and Banff National Park. Kananaskis Country includes five provincial parks, four wildland provincial parks, one ecological reserve and several provincial recreation areas.

"In June 2021, the Alberta Government implemented user fees for all personal and commercial vehicles stopping in Kananaskis Country. The fees, known as a conservation pass, are meant to provide more conservation and safety measures, and improve services and facilities." Wiki

Out on the bald prairie landscape this more than 100-year pioneer relic is still used regularly by the local community of Smuts, Saskatchewan, Canada. Onion-dome churches are common in the prairies as many ethnic Ukrainians populated the prairies at the turn of the previous century. This one, built in 1905, has the title, "St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church."

Sept 1, 2016 - back on this trail again. Our last visit here was back around 2009. We will hike out past the trees ahead, and then climb up toward Smuts Pass to the first Birdwood Lake.
