Morning sunrise colors on Cottage Lake

jeanmariesphotography.smugmug.com/

This photo was taken during a beautiful summer day in Maine. I was attracted to the color of the sky as the wind made the tall green grass dance. It was a great day, and this photo will always bring me back to that moment!

Spent an absolutely brilliant full day touring the lighthouses on Anglesey with great friend Mark Twiglet yesterday, starting at Penmon point for sunrise, which didnt deliver, but the high tide and stormy sky more than made up for it. A truly fab way to finish the year.

The aspect of photography I both love and hate the most... getting up freakishly early in the morning...

Today I woke up at 4:30 am in order to get out to the coast. After walking down the road to this spot I soon found myself knee deep in Pacific Ocean wave action.

After getting home I looked over the images, then took a hot bath, then slept a while... in the bath... finally, I woke up and processed the image a little, and now here it is.... so... what's next?

I come back to see this wreck every year, watching her slowly rot away. Every time I visit there is another piece that has fallen into the sea.

The HMQS Gayundah was a gunship built in Newcastle on Tyne and arrived in Brisbane in 1885. She was the first colonial ship to wear the white Ensign and Pendant of her Majesty's fleet.

After the Federation in 1901 she was retained by the Australian Navy and used as a training ship. In 1921 she was sold to the Brisbane Gravel company and used as a sand and gravel barge on the Brisbane River. In 1958 she was sold to the Redcliffe Town Council and was beached at Woody Point as a breakwater where she lays to this day rusting away.

Big Announcement: I have started a SmugMug photography portfolio at www.jcdy.smugmug.com!

I have spent some time re-editing some of my favorite photos - like this one - and ordering test prints to check brightness and colors. In the process I’ve started using Lightroom and learned a lot about the difference between how photos look on a backlit screen vs printed on paper, and how to use histograms to judge brightness levels so that photos will look good on different monitors and also on paper. I’m now finally ready to make the portfolio public, and very excited about it! This is a whole new stage of photography for me!

This photo is from January 2015, when I lived in Chicago. I was busy writing my dissertation that year but I did find some time to really enjoy the winter more than I ever had before (having grown up in California). The times I spent exploring the frozen-over lakeshore was some of the most fun I’ve ever had with my camera. Re-editing this made me miss Chicago! But I’m also having fun exploring Boston, and I’m hoping for some real ice- and snow-scapes next year now that I have a better sense of the Boston area. (Though there are still plenty of places I haven’t explored yet - still always looking for recommendations!)

Regarding EXIF data: sadly, it seems like Flickr has a bug in uploads today and won’t show EXIF data. So I’ll just say here that this photo was taken with a Sony Nex 5T and the 16-50mm kit lens.

A Meeting of the Mothers

Two motherships appeared out of the haze as my team and I traveled from Denver, Colorado to Colby, Kansas. Sometimes the eyes can't see what the camera does, and this was the case here, in that we might have just passed them by if not for taking a quick shot from the window.

Another shot of the Yosemite Meadows Fire from earlier this week.

Shot as the sun was going down in New Mexico. We were surrounded by three different mothership supercell cloud formations. It was awesome.
