I have turned the photo 90° to the left. If you imagine it in portrait format, you can see a narrow, high side corridor in the "German Maritime Museum" in Bremerhaven/Germany. The rectangular skylights are integrated into the ceiling and the smoke detector is attached to the ceiling. By turning it to the left, the photo looks as if you are looking into an open and empty room with high side windows.

Today is 112 day - that means time to check your smoke detectors.

We have 7 detectors that got cleaned, had batteries exchanged and tested.

Better safe than sorry. These little guys saves lifes.

One year ago I won the smoking pageant Miss SmokingAngel 2010. But now it's time to step down from the throne! To mark the dethroning here's a little special smoking video :)

Fire Prevention Week is just around the corner. October 9th through 15th, 2011, fire services through out Ontario and North America will be promoting fire safety. The theme this year is "Protect Your Family from Fire!" As part of my provincial role, I'll be visiting fire departments throughout southwestern Ontario and assisting them as they promote Fire Prevention Week.

Currently, there are 463 fire departments in Ontario. Only 31 are full-time. 176 are composite departments (volunteer & full-time), and 256 are volunteer fire departments.

Didn't know that, did you?

friendly reminder: change your smoke detector batteries. I do this every new year as an easy way to remember

A synthetic radioactive element, Americium is a component of smoke detectors. It gives off alpha radiation, and over a period of years slowly decays into neptunium.

This little button made a nice glow when pressed against a zinc sulfide coated alpha radiation detector screen.

Americium is a transuranic radioactive chemical element that has the symbol Am and atomic number 95. This transuranic element of the actinide series is located in the periodic table below the lanthanide element europium, and thus by analogy was named after another continent, America.

Americium was first produced in 1944 by the group of Glenn T. Seaborg at the University of California, Berkeley. Although it is the third element in the transuranic series, it was discovered fourth, after the heavier curium. The discovery was kept secret and only released to the public in November 1945. Most americium is produced by bombarding uranium or plutonium with alpha particles in nuclear reactors – one tonne of spent nuclear fuel contains about 100 grams of americium. It is widely used in commercial ionization chamber smoke detectors, as well as in neutron sources and industrial gauges. Several unusual applications, such as a nuclear battery or fuel for space ships with nuclear propulsion, have been proposed for the isotope 242mAm, but they are as yet hindered by the scarcity and high price of this nuclear isomer.

Americium is a relatively soft radioactive metal with silvery-white appearance. Its most common isotopes are 241Am and 243Am. In chemical compounds, they usually assume the oxidation state +3, especially in solutions. Several other oxidation states are known, which range from +2 to +7 and can be identified by their characteristic optical absorption spectra. The crystal lattice of solid americium and its compounds contains intrinsic defects, which are induced by self-irradiation with alpha particles and accumulate with time; this results in a drift of some material properties.

With my Inspector Alert, I measure, at the surface (α+β+γ) ≅ 866.6 μSv/h

Smoke detectors contain the radioactive element americium 241 in the form of americium dioxide. Americium is a synthetic element. There are about 0.3 micrograms of americium in a typical smoke detector. It has a half-life of 432.2 years. I put this detector up twenty years ago so about 3% of the americium has decayed to neptunium.

*Americium is pronounced with a soft c as in acid.

I got a rude awakening this morning on my day off... the smoke alarm went off for 15 minutes straight. I tried taking the batteries out but that didn't work. They finally shut up on their own. Now I can't screw them back into the ceilings, so both of them are dangling by the wires. Oh well.

My wife and I spent the night in room 259 at the Red Roof Inn Winchester, Virginia.

When my mobile phone rang in the night I dind't answerd the phone. But after 5 minutes it went again, so I answered - it was my boyfriends neighbor who informed me that the firebrigade was fixed to break the door, because the smoke detector gave alarm. She told me that there were 3 fire engines, we had to come along immediately. Five minutes later we reached the house and could open the door. It didn't burn, just a nuisance alarm. What a terrible fright in the night!

First Alert Onelink wireless Smoke Alarm. These talk and communicate with each other. If there is a fire in the kitchen all of the alarms will responsd by speaking the area.

I can't wait to read your answers! I'm thinking I might start a Riddle Me This Series.
