Firefighters with the Louisville Fire Department host a smoke alarm installation training for Red Cross employees and volunteers participating in the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign.

Each year, the American Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters across the country—most of which are home fires. Fires can leave families without their home and personal belongings and, in many cases, cause serious injury and even death. Through a new initiative called the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign, the Red Cross and local partners will arm families with fire prevention and preparedness tools and information. The goal of the five-year, nationwide initiative is to reduce home fire injuries and deaths by 25 percent.

we are in a process of moving, and all my lighting implements and burning implements are packed away, so you have to deal with all I have.

I did try and burn toast and take photos of that, but they did not work!

These residential smoke detectors are scattered around the building but I don't think that's what they are... there appears to be a security camera inside them. I don't know why they even bothered trying to hide it, the camera in place of the test button is fairly obvious.

This is a 6LR61 alkaline battery, or as I always knew them growing up, a PP3.

They're interesting little things, not least for being genuine batteries in a world where most of the things we call batteries are actually cells.

They were developed by Ever Ready in the early fifties, and they were designed to meet the need of transistor radios by having a relatively high voltage in a small package.

Both terminals are on the top, and in days of old you could test the voltage with your tongue(!). Something of a design flaw is that it's dead easy to put two batteries in a dead short and start a nice fire.

They've fallen somewhat out of fashion as electronics have moved to lithium ion batteries at 3.7V, but they still find uses in guitar effects pedals, radio microphones and the one reason we all have to buy them for, and that always makes us wince at how expensive they are - smoke alarms!

That's what this came out of. Chirpy chirpy cheep cheep!

“My stepdad has been a Fireman for 27 years so we have always talked about fire preparedness, prevention and escape plans and what to do in case of emergencies. It’s definitely been drilled into me from a young age how important these things are,” says Megan, a volunteer for the American Red Cross Sound the Alarm program. Megan and nearly 100 other volunteers installed free smoke alarms in homes in Santa Clara on May 21.

Thank you to Megan and other volunteers who helped local families prevent and prepare for home fires.
