Smith Tower is one of the oldest Skyscraper in Seattle. Built in 1914, this 38-story building is located in Pioneer Square and was one of the tallest office building west of the Mississippi river at that time.

This shot was take from the Sky View Observatory in the Columbia Tower.

We took a road trip to see the Smith's Longspur and the bird was exactly where the directions said. It was hanging out with two Lapland Longspurs and a bunch of snow buntings.

A lifer for us.

We had never seen buntings on a wire before.

"Longspur" refers to the elongated claw of the hind toe.

By suggestion of my mate Elliot, I've taken a picture of the full Smith's fleet (including maintenance vehicles) in front of the depot.

Great suggestion mate, as I'm happy with the results.

Smith Tower used to be the tallest building in Seattle, but it hasn't held that honor in quite some time. What I think is really cool about this building is that there is an apartment at the top that someone lives in!

On the northern border of Kansas I patiently awaited the last severe cells that I could chase in 2018. I was in position for another fantastic chase day. No nader... but I had some excellent structure before she went outflow dominant east of Smith Center Kansas. It was definitely worth my time that afternoon. (BTW I spelled dominant wrong in the video...lol)

Some phenomenal captures that afternoon. Now all I have left is about 1000 images that didn't get into any set and were just on my to do list. I'll be post those over the next few weeks.

40 some odd days till spring here, and I'll be on the hunt once again in 2019.

From "Find-A-Grave" a brief biography of the remarkable Dr. Briggs:

L. (Lloyd) Vernon Briggs (1863-1941), M.D., 1889, Medical College of Virginia at Richmond was a psychiatrist and medical reformer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He was active in seeking changes to the laws regarding the evaluation and incarceration of people with mental illness and in suggesting reforms to the asylum, prison, hospital systems in the Commonwealth.

L. Vernon Briggs began attending medical lectures at Harvard Medical School at the age of sixteen with the consent of the professor, Henry I. Bowditch (1808-1892). Briggs was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis before he could matriculate into medical school. On the advice of his physician, Briggs took a sea voyage around South America to Hawaii in 1880. He settled temporarily in Hawaii and received an appointment as Deputy Vaccinating Officer on Oahu from the Hawaiian government. Briggs returned to Boston in the mid-1880s. In pursuit of his medical degree, Briggs took courses at Tufts University, Dartmouth College, and Harvard Medical School; he also took a position as a physician's assistant. He received his M.D. From the Medical College of Virginia in 1889.

Briggs worked closely with Walter Channing (1849-1921) during the 1890s and early 1910s, taking a position as physician at Channing's private sanatorium in Brookline, Massachusetts. Briggs also held positions at the Boston State Hospital and on the Massachusetts State Board of Insanity. He was largely responsible for the passage in early 1923 of legislation nicknamed "The Briggs Law," which required the psychiatric evaluation of people held in custody and charged with a felony before the commencement of criminal procedures against them.

Briggs volunteered for military service at the outbreak of World War I. He worked primarily at Camp Devens in Massachusetts designing psychiatric tests for servicemen. After the war, he was active in veterans' service organizations.

These gals were taking photos of each other posing and rolling around in the surf. I kindly offered to take photos of both of them together, with their camera. And then they kindly agreed to let me take a photo with mine.

As mentioned before I am trying to push myself to do some non-studio portraits. I'm trying to overcome my discomfort at asking strangers if I can take their photo, so I am grateful to those who have agreed. I can't say I am happy with the result, but just asking a total stranger is a bit of an achievement in itself. Thank you Mr Smith for being patient with me at the Astle Park Traction Engine Rally and not sticking an arrow between my eyes.

This is the best shot of the day from my trip to see North Georgia this past weekend. Smith Creek is formed at the base of Anna Ruby Falls where Curtis Creek and York Creek converge. I shot this from the footbridge on the trail to the falls. There was too much traffic to setup my tripod, so I had to make due with the bridge\'s hand rail.

After a successful sunset shooting yesterday evening, a friend from work and I decided to try our luck with sunrise this morning. We went to Smith rock, the state park located about 30 miles north of Bend. On the way there, we could see a faint pink color of the clouds above us, which we thought guaranteed a colorful sunrise. When we arrived, the light and colors were already splashing the rocks, but unfortunately, this lasted for only about 5 minutes. The clouds covered the sun, and we completely lost the light on the rocks. Luckily, I was able to take a few shots during the peak, and here's one of them... Hope you enjoy it...

Kimmo Vahteri performing a beautiful backside smith on a junk car at the old army barracks back in 2004, Oulu, Finland. Now the site is filled with expensive condos.

Taken with an old Yashica-C TLR which I bought for 50 €, it served well for many years but is now in dire need of repair. This was one my first flash pictures that came out the way I wanted. Theres one Metz 45 on the right, slightly behind Kimmo and a Vivitar 283 behind the car, creating the rimlight. Fired with Multiblitz radio slaves, I haven't missed those since I got Pocket Wizards.
