Today I was invited to a Sony product launch but unfortunately it did not include the Sony A9. I was promised that there would be an A9 launch party in the not too distant future.
Basically what was launched today was the Sony A1 OLED 4K Ultra HD series of Smart TVs and they were impressive. The A1 is available in 55", 65" and they will be shipping a 77" version later in the year. We saw the first 77” A1 in Europe.
As reviewing home electronics is not what I do I am publishing some photographs of the event but I will not provide any technical or other information other than to say that I am considering the A1 55”.
It was almost impossible to photograph to photograph the 77” TV as it was huge but I hope that my photographs are of interest to some of you.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment y LG España han organizado una interesante mesa redonda en la que han participado distintos expertos de cine y tecnología y que ha congregado a un gran número de medios de comunicación.
Rafael Martínez-Avial, Managing Director de 20th Century Fox H E España ha moderado la mesa en la que han intervenido Gerardo Sánchez, Director del programa de TVE ‘Días de cine’, José María Aresté, director de decine21.com, el periodista especializado en cine Víctor Riverola y Jonan Basterra, fundador y coautor del blog Pixel y Dixel, uno de los blogs de Internet y tecnología más populares de España, así como José María Zamora, Director de Marketing de LG Electronics España y Jacobo Vila, Director de Marketing de 20th Century Fox H E España que han expuesto las tendencias que están por llegar tanto en lo que se refiere a smart tv como a descargas y plataformas como Ultraviolet.
Todos ellos han coincidido en afirmar que, tanto el aficionado al cine como el consumidor de contenidos en general, quieren disfrutar del cine en la mejor calidad posible “allá donde se encuentre”, independientemente del dispositivo que esté usando en cada momento.
En palabras de Gerardo Sánchez, “como aficionado al cine llevo toda la vida actualizándome (…) las opciones de visionado deben estar abiertas, la industria debe dar todas las posibilidades ya sea de compra tradicional, de descarga, en streaming… oímos hablar del Ultraviolet, súper interesante, una tarea inabarcable pasar todo la nube, pero no cabe duda de que llegará”.
José María Aresté ha comenzado su intervención destacando las posibilidades que ofrecen los nuevos medios de comunicación, “el acceso a las películas es más sencillo que nunca y a la información cinematográfica también, ahora puedes compartir tu punto de vista de inmediato comentando la película que estás viendo” y ha aportado un curioso punto de vista diciendo que “había ganado Lumier con las salas de cine frente al kinetoscopio de Edison que se disfrutaba en soledad y parece que ahora ha llegado la venganza de Edison, puesto que cada vez disfrutamos de las películas de manera individual en nuestros dispositivos.”
Jonan Basterra ha comenzado repasando el concepto de smart tv como “centro del consumo de ocio en casa” destacando sobre todo que “cada vez hay mayor interacción entre dispositivos” y la televisión a la carta, previendo que además “los contenidos serán cada vez más participativos” y destacando que “el consumidor quiere encontrar los contenidos y si se ofrecen a un precio razonable, con un oferta adecuada, no se va a complicar la vida para encontrar contenidos gratuitos de peor calidad”.
En la intervención de Víctor Riverola, la importancia del material adicional que se incluye en los Blu-ray ha sido protagonista, “de los extras se aprende de una manera muy amena y en inglés subtitulado y hay extras que pueden ser más atractivos que la propia película como en el caso de películas como Star Wars o colecciones de humor como las de Monty Python”, ha reivindicado estos documentales como herramientas de divulgación y también ha querido subrayar que “el futuro del cine pasa por la especialización de contenidos usando la tecnología para hacerlo posible, el cine es una herramienta de divulgación cultural y de experimentación técnica.”
Por su parte, José María Zamora ha destacado que “hasta hace 1 o 2 años la televisión estaba en una posición de desventaja frente al ordenador o la consola y la aparición de la smart tv ha cambiado la situación porque vas a poder hacer miles de cosas con ella” y ha anunciado que “la televisión interactiva es el siguiente paso con posibilidades infinitas como poder navegar libremente a la vez que vemos la tele” y ha destacado que “el mundo de las app también se incorpora a la smart tv para poder ver el periódico, pedir una pizza mientras ves una película o comentar el partido en redes sociales con un solo dispositivo…” y ha concluido afirmando que el 3D ha llegado para quedarse “para mí es un cambio tan drástico como el paso de la tele en blanco y negro a la tele en color”.
Por último, Jacobo Vila ha afirmado que “el futuro descansa en dos pilares: el primero, enriquecer la experiencia cinematográfica del consumidor a través de los contenidos adicionales y a través del 3D, que no es una moda pasajera, puesto que en salas está muy consolidado y cada vez ofrecemos más títulos en 3D como nuestros próximos lanzamientos de ‘Abraham Lincoln: Cazador de vampiros’, ‘Prometheus’ o ‘Ice Age 4: La formación de los continentes’, estando incluso invirtiendo en reconvertir títulos anteriores”. Y como segundo pilar ha hablado de la “flexibilidad de acceso a contenidos por parte del consumidor”, bien sea a través de la Copia Digital, “un archivo al que el consumidor tiene acceso para reproducirlo en su ordenador, tablet o Smartphone” o través del Ultraviolet, “un estándar a través del que podremos tener acceso a nuestra filmoteca en la nube, un acceso rápido, cómodo, seguro y desde cualquier punto y con derechos de visionado de por vida. Desconocido aún en España, lleva ya un año en EEUU y está comenzando en Reino Unido y llegará dentro de poco a España.”
Al concluir las intervenciones de los ponentes ha tenido lugar un intenso coloquio respondiendo también a las preguntas de la prensa asistente, centradas sobre todo en las plataformas de descarga legal, que, en palabras de Jacobo Vila, “en un plazo de 18 a 24 meses estarán muy consolidadas y todos los estudios deberíamos tener entre 500 y 700 títulos en 10 o 12 plataformas”.

Rotten day in work today. Nobody's fault, they just happen sometimes.
Blessedly, things got a lot better when I got home.
The replacement telly arrived, and the customer services were brilliant and really helpful.
It's a lovely telly, and does all kinds of fabulous stuff, including BBC iplayer support, Youtube and a pile of other stuff.
Rather usefully it streams files from the media server beautifully, though I'm having some aspect ratio issues with M4V files that I need to try and resolve.
It also has a web browser built it, so here it is looking at my photostream.
