California-based AeroVironment, Inc. has licensed a technology from PNNL that will potentially allow widespread adoption of plug-in electric vehicles without negatively impacting the electrical grid. The PNNL technology tells a vehicle’s battery charger when to start and stop charging based upon existing conditions on the electrical grid. AeroVironment will use a portion of the licensed technology in a new prototype version of its Level II charging systems.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Engineer Michael Kintner-Meyer assesses installation of a Smart Charger Controller device into a Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) provided by Energy Northwest. The Controller tells the car's battery when to start and stop re-charging based upon existing stress in the electric grid.

OEM, HV Battery is failing in a very big way. The car sat for close to a year and the cells in the HV Battery are pretty much toast. They will not hold a charge for long, by self discharging very fast..
This addon pack of Pb Acid Batteries and Capacitor Bank, allow the vehicle run, so we can do some cycling on the OEM Battery cells, and see if any come back to life and hold a 7.2volt or better charge over time.
Currently this Hybrid HV Battery system remains when not in use, plugged into the grid to maintain this 335volt charge at all times. If not, the bad cells in the OEM battery will self discharge the entire system rather quickly.
Why do you ask that we don't just disconnect from the OEM when not in use. We want to keep a constant full charge voltage applied to the pack in order to try and get them to slowly come back to life, if any of the cells have it left in them to do so.
Experimenting with the idea of charging the traction pack with individual smart chargers, yet still have the traction pack wired in series.
This test of 2ea AGM's wired in series, and the individual chargers attached to this series string worked great. Both smart chargers were plugged into the same AC circuit, and the outputs attached directly to each battery in the string.
This method of charging will take care of two things, Charging and Balancing.
The plans, are to take the guts out of several of these smart chargers, mount them into a single box, and have the chargers onboard with the E-Trike.
Every photographer knows this stage...I'm always prepared. Everything's charged. Everything's got a backup. Hell, my backups have backups, and that's the way (uh huh uh huh) I like it!
