What does it take to be really smart?
One of my earliest memories (I think I was 4) is of my mother proudly telling a friend how I had just taken an IQ test before beginning primarily school and ended up being in the top 3 percent of children my age in the country. Unfortunately my “high IQ” did not save me from badly flunking the non-material smarts exam some twenty years later when I first came across preliminary Bhakti Yoga handbook Bhagavad Gita.
You see, ordinarily material intelligence is quite different from it’s non-material counter part. We can use an ordinary example to illustrate the difference. Although knowing well that all their hard work will be washed away in a few short minutes or hours, what adult will criticize kids for building a sandcastle? But if we role up our sleeves and seriously begin construction, who will applaud? We, as “grown ups,” are supposed to know more substantial pleasures. In the same way, any attempt at happiness that has a beginning and an end is considered a product of childlike intelligence by the wise, who, knowing well the joys of pleasure beyond time, would never partake in or encourage such.
Whether our “adult sandcastles” take the shape of accumulating money, possessions, travel, relationships, sports, art, education, physical beauty and strength, entertainment, social popularity and prestige, career advancement or indeed any one of the myriad forms of temporary gratification available today, all are rejected as inferior distractions by those with real smarts. Such truly wise and humble souls dedicate their lives to sharing the sublime knowledge and experience of Bhakti, the pleasure of the eternal self.
