St. Jamestown started out as a place for the 'swingin' singles' in the late 1950s, and based its urban design on Le Corbusier's Towers in a Park. It razed much of the lower density housing, based on the idea that life in the downtown core was activity enough, and that towers in parks gave air and light.
Unfortunately, this was not to be, and St. Jamestown is now one of Toronto's poorest neighbourhoods, and is home to many immigrant families. The other great irony is that a mere few blocks away lies Toronto's toniest neighbourhood, Rosedale, to the north. To the south and east is Toronto's gentrified Cabbagetown neighbourhood.
The recent condominium boom has resulted in the last remnants of any middle class living here disappearing and moving on. Now the owners are now seeking new tenants to fill vacant apartments.
The slogan 'smart urban living' is somewhat ironic given the wallbangers hanging out of windows, and plywood where windows used to be.
