Winter

Is it Floridians, Americans or the world that allows the weather to consume 90% of all smalltalk? Isn't it rather obvious whether it's cold and windy or rainy and muggy outside? "Cold enough for ya?" Shut up.

Avocado

I kept this seed in water for a while, even after I thought it was a goner. Then, one day, roots. So now it's a handsome little avocado waiting to be planted outside. It's a 'slimcado', whatever kind that is... not a hass. Even if it doesn't fruit I'm quite proud of its progress. Pretty idiotic but how many avocado trees do you have? Indeed.

This one shows us enjoying the outdoor seating at the University of Akron, looking at the downtown skyline as we eat sandwiches and make smalltalk.

A found frame in the office reminds me. It was a smalltalk. On nanotech. I did a live, and unfortunately, unrehearsed demo of the new Nanotex waterproof khakis. I took a glass of water and splashed my waist with vigor to show how it would leave no mark. In a freak instance of fabric folding, the bolus of water hooked into a gaping open pant pocket. The inner pocket lining did not have any Nanotex coating.... So for the entire talk my boxers were soaking wet, but you wouldn’t know it because none of the water could seep through the outer pants fabric. The baggy trousers photo below is post-mishap.

On screen is a Scanning Tunneling Microscope scan of dyads of atoms (carbon monoxide) on a copper surface. We got to play with these during a visit to Don Eigler’s labs at the IBM Almaden Research Center. A room full of equipment interfaces to a PC with a mouse that lets you move atoms around with audible feedback as you drag them across the surface (imagine the copper lattice atoms are bumpy like eggs in a carton).

In this particular example, carbon monoxide is lined up like dominos on the surface. With a flick on one end, they tumble like a child’s cascade. In this case, they are pre-configured to implement a logic circuit (the world’s smallest 3-input sorter). It was 260,000 times smaller than the smallest IC equivalent at the time.

Circuit design experiments were done with regular dominos. The business expense report for dominoes raised some eyebrows at IBM.

Smalltalk und Finger auf der Linse

"Don't ask whether you can do something, but how to do it." -- Adele Goldberg

Dr. Adele Goldberg is one of the most respected people in the software industry. She worked for the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center for many years and is the cofounder of ParcPlace-Digitalk, a company which produces application development environments for corporate software developers.

Dr. Goldberg has served as president of the ACM and has received numerous awards for her contributions to computing. Along with Alan Kay, Dr. Goldberg developed Smalltalk and wrote much of the documentation. Smalltalk was used to prototype the WIMP (windows, icons, menus, pointers) interface at Xerox Parc, the cornerstone for today's modern graphical user interfaces.

We expected to reach Amsterdam before anyone would be lured into an enclosed room to be felt up by two large men, but this Red Light District special was offered to Kevin free of charge by our friendly airport safety officers. Narrowly avoiding the same fate for doing so, Jake snapped this photo.

Getting through security was the easy part - getting out of RDU in the upcoming thunderstorm would prove more difficult. After four hours at the gate that involved painful smalltalk with one of Kevin's ex-girlfriends and her mom, Jake gorging on all the trail mix packed for the whole trip, and Kevin spending 10 minutes at the water fountain dissolving an Airborne tablet in his mouth, we were invited to cross the rainswept tarmac to board the Cincinatti-bound plane.

AHAH here, which literally means As Hot As Hell. There's nothing to laugh about. So I upload a butterfly to pretend that it's not 11pm and it's impossible to sleep. I'm gonna lie on the pavement as soon as possible!

Resumed my mum's old Rolleireflex. Bringing it to someone who will fix it as soon as possible, or at least try to fix the lenses. Maybe I'll gain a f 1.8 50mm practically for free. I love my mum =D
