Common Kingfisher / alcedo atthis. 16/05/19.
My day photographing Kingfishers was not totally dominated by the male bird. The female, (his mate), put in three appearances altogether with long intervals between each one.
As the female was occupied in caring for a new brood, she largely confined herself to the nesting chamber. I'm pretty sure her brief visits out to the perched, calling male were more about having a change of scene and getting some exercise than about hunger. The dark nest chamber must be a fetid, cramped space to spend time in for long.
It looked as if this Lady Fisher had been doing a bit of home improvement in the tunnel. The tip of her beak is covered with grains of soil. Her partly open mandibles signify that she was calling to her mate.

In the mail today I received my shiny new copy of The Rough Guide to Digital Photography. It was written by my friend, the lovely SophieG (warning, stream contains photos of things on tables) and contains quite a lot of nice photos. Sadly, in a uncharacteristic moment of poor judgement she choose to put one of my efforts inside the front cover, but don't let that put you off :)
If I didn't already have a free copy I'd buy at least 4 of them.
...Well it was when I took this! Taken a few weeks ago now on a camera club field trip to Parrsboro. Not an area I was very familiar with but since the trip the surrounding area has become a new fave of mine. The Autumn colours were spectacular, but try as I might to get this shot just right I am still not 100% happy with it, I felt that it doesn't quite convey the splendour of what the eyes saw that morning.
Definitely looks better smaller :o)

Ferruginous Duck / aythya nyroca. Attenborough, Nottinghamshire. 15/04/19.
'WATER OFF A DUCK'S BACK.'
A pair of these rare ducks turned up at a local nature reserve a couple of weeks ago, too good for me to ignore despite their unknown credentials. Neither of the birds wore legs rings and their wing feathers were all intact. My niggling doubt lies in the knowledge that FDs are kept in captivity under free-flying conditions in this country .....
This image is of the female during one of her afternoon feeding sessions. I loved her chocolate-brown eyes which gave her a much friendlier look when comparing them to the pale, cold staring eyes of the drake!

'SUN WORSHIPPER.'
It takes some decent light to show that a Razorbill is not as black as you imagine it to be. Although lacking the chocolate-brown tones of a Guillemot, it is still undeniably ... brown.
This one was allowing a tantalising peep into it's gorgeous banana-yellow mouth. I waited for what seemed an age, willing it to yawn and reveal the full beauty of it's gape.
The Razorbill had other ideas and simply slept on!

Mandarin Duck / aix galericulata. Wollaton Park, Nottinghamshire. 01/04/18.
Male Mandarin keeping an eye on me.
I've never had much luck in photographing this species ....either too distant, flighty or swimming away rapidly, giving unsatisfactory views.
My luck changed on the first day of April when I came across two pairs who, after a brief scuffle, all flew up to the branches of a lakeside alder. After some feather shaking and preening, each bird tucked its beak into its back feathers and roosted. Despite the poor light and the onset of drizzle, my camera shutter went into overdrive!
In this catch it's all about that eye which would snap open periodically, check me over without blinking, then close again.

'SLEEPING BEAUTY'.
A nice find back in the Spring, despite the falling light and drizzle.
Two pairs of Mandarin Ducks flew up the thick branches of an Alder tree which overhung the lake. They then started to preen and shake their plumage vigorously before settling down to sleep.
It was a treat to see them so relaxed, in such close proximity to where I stood. Generally I find them extremely wary subjects.

Water Rail / rallus aquaticus. Attenborough, Nottinghamshire. 30/01/18.
This individual has delighted birders and non-birders alike with its frequent appearances in a small reedbed outside the Visitors Centre at Attenborough N.R.
To photograph the bird I had to stand on an elevated walkway and look down on it, hence the undesirable PoV! Not ideal I know...(nor was the scruffy, litter strewn spot it favoured the most, come to that), but beggars can't be choosers. I've got no regrets in devoting some time to this 'value for money' bird. It provided me with the most prolonged and outstanding views I've ever had of a notoriously wary skulker. Moreover, from my elevated position I was able to appreciate just how narrow its body was and fully understand how it can slip through reeds and other vegetation so effortlessly.

Guillemot / uria aalge. Bempton Cliffs, East Yorkshire. 22/06/19.
Braving the elements on the steep chalk breeding cliffs must be hard for the seabirds that use them annually. One thing is for certain though, they are never short of something to watch!
Earlier these two had engaged in some mutual preening, a ritual that strengthens the pair bond. That done they have now found something of great interest to look at below them.

'PLAIN CHOCOLATE, MILK CHOCOLATE.'
Another Guillemot caught 'rubber-necking' at activities below. They seem to be the most inquisitive of the auk family I've noticed. This one has a mucky head and beak and time could be more profitably spent sprucing itself up perhaps!
The Razorbill in the background provides a nice comparison between the 'brown' plumages of the two auks.

'NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER'.
There are reportedly four Water Rails showing around the small reedbed outside the Visitor Centre at the moment. They frequently search for food in the drainage channel, giving clear views of feeding behaviours.
These birds always look extremely bad tempered to me, not the sort to be messed with, should you ever come face to face in a reedbed - and this one particularly so. Yet their looks and the blood curdling squeals they emit from time to time, mask a true wimp of a bird. They appear to live life in a constant state of nervous tension where the slightest noise or movement has them scuttling off into cover. Water Rails ... 'mean', 'hard' ? Not a bit of it, they are frightened of their own shadows!
Here's Rebecca again, this time on the beach. The dress, her look and her unique hat reminded of a Victorian day out at the beach, so I added the postcard detail for a bit of fun.

Humboldt Penguins are distributed along the coasts of Chile and Peru, keeping their largest colonies in Chañaral Island and Punta San Juan. The climate they inhabit is warm in some areas, and intense sunlight increases their body temperature.
The Humboldt penguin is a carnivore. Its diet is based on the small fish (such as anchovies and sardines), squids and krill. Humboldt penguin can reach the speed of 20 to 30 miles per hour, and dive to a depth of 492 feet to find food. It has excellent eyesight which facilitates detection of food and predators.

Well you knew it had to happen sooner or later, a picture of Peggy's and Sophie G's fabulous postcard texture...It really was a no brainer :o) Do check out her gorgeous photostream, she has so many superb images, put your feet up you'll be there for a while!
Peggy's Cove is 43 kilometres southwest of downtown Halifax and comprises one of the numerous small fishing communities located around the perimeter of the Chebucto Peninsula.
The community is named after the cove of the same name. Peggy is a nickname for Margaret, and the village may have taken its name from St. Margarets Bay upon which it is situated. Local folklore has several alternative origins for the name. Some people claim Peggy was an early settler. Others say she was a young survivor from a shipwreck who remembered nothing of her life before her rescue; not even her name but was given the name Peggy by the family who adopted her.
The village was founded in 1811 when the Province of Nova Scotia issued a land grant of more than 800 acres (3.2 km2) to six families of German descent. The settlers relied on fishing as the mainstay of their economy but also farmed where the soil was fertile. They used surrounding lands to pasture cattle. In the early 1900s the population peaked at about 300. The community supported a schoolhouse, church, general store, lobster cannery and boats of all sizes that were nestled in the Cove.
Many artists and photographers flocked to Peggys Cove. As roads improved, the number of tourists increased. Today the population is smaller but Peggys Cove remains an active fishing village and a favourite tourist destination.

Little Grebe / tachybaptus ruficollis. Derbyshire. 02/04/19.
These Little Grebes are nesting at the side of the canal under the overhanging vegetation.
Five minutes prior to making this image, the female had swam across with soggy reed strands trailing from her beak. She was followed dutifully by her mate ... (who carried nothing!) and they both disappeared from view.
With more nest construction completed, the pair skulked in the shadows, peering out and waiting for the right time to swim into open water again. They are such edgy, retiring little birds and it is a joy to watch them from a respectful distance, you have to pretend you're not really looking!

Common Moorhen / gallinula chloropus. Kirk Hallam, Derbyshire. 27/02/21.
An easy to recognise individual because of the scarring on it's red forehead plate. Maybe the result of a fight with another bird or perhaps a physical defect/disease? It did seem rather lethargic despite it's bright eyes, so maybe an old bird?
