a week out of crate rest and he's keen to catch-up on some sunbathing

poor Chester has finally been diagnosed with a slipped disc between the 5th and 6th vertebrae in his neck.

I've been going to the vet with his on again/off again symptoms for about 6 months (and earlier). The x-rays from 6 months ago do show a narrowing of the gap between 5/6 which can be indictative but it was "missed" and his problems were put down to a soft-tissue injury, he had some physio with little improvement (maybe because when we went to the physio he was showing no symptoms for them to do anything).

Anyway, I'm glad we finally have an answer and the treatment is drugs and 6 weeks (!!! yup 6 weeks!!) of strict rest which basically means Chester will spend his time in the crate, only coming out for toileting.

I crate trained Chester perfectly ...

feel free to skip the rest of this I'm about to start rambling

Chester is amazing! He loves meeting new people, and going to the vets, he was so chilled at the specialist vet, somewhere he's never been before, being poked and prodded by strangers and smiling and wagging his tail the whole time, he is great with other dogs (making love not war), he always does what I ask, and more ... when I've let him out to toilet he strolls into the yard does his business, I let him have a little extra time for sniffs, then "go to bed" and he trots back inside (the back door) into his crate and settles while I close the door, he hasn't whinged (he's never been a whinger) he's just great ... that's enough, I love my Brats :-))

The premises were originally one house and were probably built on the site of the Chantry priest’s house in 1510. (Today the date shown on the building is 1501 but this should read 1510).

Tania has been having problems standing up lately, straining on her shoulders to pull herself up with great effort, and dragging her left hind leg in the process. This, plus collapsing whilst walking or coming down the stairs, we knew that something was definitely wrong. She has a very high threshold for pain, so when the whimpering started, I was really worried.

Our vet, Dr Ly, confirmed that her IVDD at the base of her neck & mid back has worsened, and she has a few slipped discs/displaced vertebrae at the lower back. When I heard the words slipped discs, I panicked.

Seeing her in pain again broke my heart, and Dr Ly said that she's definitely in quite a bit of pain, so she's back on pain killers and muscle relaxants.

Additionally, she has to wear a thunder shirt for the rest of her life, 24/7, and with the humid weather here, it gets pretty uncomfortable for her. No more going up the staircase, so that's been blocked off already.

Fortunately, Dr Ly has a wonderful chiropractor who comes to his clinic twice a week to help dogs like Tania. At 6-1/2 yrs old, he commented that she was just too young to have such problems, but I gave him a brief history of how she's been dealing with it from under a year old, and he was amazed at her happy disposition despite all her problems.

We've had 3 sessions so far, and she's far more relaxed with him. With his expert treatment to adjust her displaced vertebra, I also have to do therapy exercises he taught me, 4x a day on her, to get her back to as comfortable a level as possible.

I know she's really hurting as she actually grabs my hand in her mouth away from her body during therapy and growls slightly.

Thank goodness we've built a very strong bond between us over the years and the trust factor is the epicentre of her allowing me to touch her, and I feel so blessed that she trusts me totally to massage/rotate those hard, sore shoulders and stretch those painful hind legs which lost muscle mass and went weak & flaccid as we couldn't swim her during the rainy months from mid-Oct to mid-Jan.

Lots of love and trust ... that's what will see us through this new episode of Miss Tania's journey with IVDD.

The spinal cord vertebrae is made up of a heap of bones. These vertebrates are full of fluid in the disc, which keeps them flexible and strong. As soon as your age progresses, the disc becomes dehydrate or gradually losing its fluid. This condition is called disc dehydration or Disc Desiccation, which can cause Degenerative Disc Disease.
