A present I made for my advisor. I am proud of this one! I wanted to make something that had a tiny bit of authenticity. I found this Victorian embroidery pattern and worked off of these color scheme slides, and went shopping for stuff. The paper came from Paper Presentation and I liked it pretty well. (I was looking for something darker, sort of like the trimming ribbon, but I couldn't find it anywhere.) The large center ribbon came from M&J, and I dithered over the secondary ribbon forever. I bought at least three different things I didn't end up using and was just never quite happy with it. ("But it doesn't look VICTORIAN ENOUGH!") Ultimately though, I discovered my new favorite store in the city, Tinsel Trading, where I carried around an armful of twelve different things in an ecstatic frenzy of swear words, before buying the thin purple one for the embroidery, and the top one for trimming.
I LOVE THAT STORE SO MUCH. I WANT TO BRING YOU THERE!
So... first I cut the paper, sort of badly; it'd been a while since I cut paper precisely. But it was okay. I needed a front and a back, because at first I thought I'd be able to make the bookmark look nice on both sides, but no, there was definitely going to be an ugly side. I glued down the ribbon on the top sheet, leaving a long tail to fold back up later. I poked holes at the sides based on this "sewing on paper" tutorial. I had to enlarge the holes a little, so I did a pass with pushing the needle through them before I did the sewing part. Then I threaded it with the purple ribbon and did the embroidery, carefully so the ribbon wouldn't twist up. (I also tried to avoid trapping dog hair in the stitches, but...) Then I glued down the backing paper, wrapped the rose ribbon's tail up the back and over the top a little bit. (So, the back just has a pink stripe.) Then I covered up the seam by using this French bow tutorial for the trim, and sewed that down with thread.
Then I clamped it down underneath a bunch of heavy books for the glue to set and dry overnight, and hoped that it wouldn't look too knobbly in the morning. And it didn't! It was okay. Not a delicate Victorian thing, exactly, but all the bits were executed pretty well. The "wrong side" of the ribbons were a problem. And better, thinner glue would have helped improve it. I found this hilariously specific glue recommendation website and did a couple spot tests: Krazy Glue wasn't good at bonding the ribbon to the paper, and it left a big stain when it dried. Normal school glue did okay if I used really small amounts, but it left me compromising with that gluey stiffness in the end.
Anyway. Hey look I made a pretty bookmark. It was a really nice present. (And if I don't write all this down, I'll never remember how I did it.)

Automotive Aftermarket Parts and Car Customization
There are three garages for individualising ones car after purchase. This one specialises in wheels, but also does shock absorbers, suspension lowering, and humungous exhaust mufflers to "Realize" or "Make Dress up Car."
The size of the automotive aftermarket parts market is about the same per capita (about 580 dollars in Japan, 2007 figures, to about 600 dollars per capita in the US) but Japanese cars do fewer miles and are on the road for less time and are of a higher reliability, so presumably a far greater proportion of that market is spent on non-essential, customization of the car.
As another indication of the extent to which Japanese people like to pimp their ride, all of the companies (Mode Parfum (Blow Design), Aimgain, Wald, Junction Produce, Anceltion (RIP)) recommended as offering "Vip Styling kits" in this English language article on how to make your car look like a VIP's (pimp's?) car are Japanese companies.
On my way home today I took some photos of phenomena that seem to me to express Japanese individualism. All of them are visual expressions of individualism. All of the Japanese people invovled in their creation would seem, and in language be, humble, mild-mannered, and introverted. Give them a camera, ask them to design a car, manga, or house however and their taste for individuality stands out.
