The sky looked washed out… like someone had taken all the color from it and left everything a little too quiet. No warmth, no glow… just that soft, empty gray stretching forever.
And somehow, it made everything else stand out more.
I leaned against the fence, letting the stillness settle in instead of fighting it. There’s something about moments like that… where nothing is loud, nothing is pulling at you… and you finally feel steady in your own skin.

I climbed up first.
The wood creaked softly under my steps, the kind of quiet sound that feels louder when everything else is still. The air up there was different… lighter, softer, like the world couldn’t quite reach that high. I dropped onto one of the cushions, tucking my legs under me, watching the waterfall spill endlessly down the rocks like it had nowhere else to be.
For a minute… it really was peaceful.
Then I heard it.
That soft click.
I turned, leaning over the edge just enough to see the glow below colors shifting, pieces falling into place one after another. You didn’t even say anything, just gave me that look like you already knew I was coming down.
“Just one round,” you said.
I should’ve known better.
The first piece dropped with a quiet snap into place. Then another. Then another. The board started filling, colors stacking, lines forming… almost, but not quite. I leaned in closer without realizing it, eyes tracking every move, already trying to plan three steps ahead.
“You’re not paying attention,” you said, way too casually.
I narrowed my eyes.
“Oh, I am now.”
One move.
Two.
Three—
“You’re cheating.”
“I’m winning.”
And suddenly it wasn’t quiet anymore.
It was laughter, accusations, “wait wait wait—no—” and that stubborn determination to not lose, even if it meant dragging the game out longer than it should’ve been. The soft glow of the board reflected off everything around us, turning something simple into something that felt… a little too serious for a “just one round.”
I don’t even remember who actually won.
I just remember not wanting to stop.
