The name of the village of Lower Slaughter stems from the Old English name for a wet land 'slough' or 'slothre' (Old English for muddy place) upon which it lies. This quaint village sits beside the little Eye stream and is known for it's unspoilt limestone cottages in the traditional Cotswold style.
The stream running through the village is crossed by two small bridges and the local attraction is a converted mill with original water wheel selling craft type products.
Lower Slaughter is a small village in the Cotswold district, built on both banks of the River Eye.

Into the Field
You are standing near the center of the most successful Union attack at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Two Union divisions, Gen. George G. Meade's on your left and Gen. John Gibbon's on your right, advanced into this field and soon encountered the "Virginia ditch fence" visible on your right and left. The ditch fences, dug by farmers to divide their fields and to promote drainage, were much steeper, deeper, and wider during the battle. Union soldiers scrambled across this and other obstacles however they could.
After Union troops crossed the ditch fences, converging Confederate artillery fire stopped them cold. The Federals laid down in the fields in front of you as Union cannons replied in kind. Both sides suffered heavy losses in men, horses, and equipment. When the fire was too hot for the men of one Confederate battery, its commander "wrapped his battle flag around him, walking up and down among his deserted guns" to shame his gunners back into position.

As the Union troops advanced into this field, terrain slowed them and Southern cannon fire brought them to a halt.

Just prior to the Union assault, 24-year-old Confederate Major John Pelham advanced one cannon a mile to your left and wrought havoc on the Union lines. Dangerously exposed and outgunned, Pelham disrupted the Union attack for nearly an hour and emerged unscathed. Of Pelham's actions, Gen. Robert E. General James Negley, commanding the division to the left of Sheridan's positioned his troops among these limestone outcroppings, which functioned as impromptu breastworks. There, they easily held the Confederate advance for two hours until Sheridan's brigades, exhausted from fighting all morning and now out of ammunition, broke and ran. Flanked, Negley was forced to retreat as well; however those outcroppings which had protected his troops now worked against them, breaking up their positions and acting as a continual underfoot hazard as they retreated under fire.

A Chosen of the Crimson Slaughter, from the Warhammer 40k Dark Vengeance set. My first time painting a Games Workshop model.
The models in the Dark Vengeance set are ridiculously detailed in general, so are a lot of fun to work on. I have the whole squad assembled and in my painting line, but this was the first I finished as a prototype of sorts for my color choices. I added the yellow-green tubes and blue-green waistcloth to splash in a bit more color, but otherwise stuck with the default studio scheme. I freehand painted on the Crimson Slaughter insignia on the right shoulder plate.
He’s not based yet as I’m waiting to finish the squad before I start building out the bases.
