We finished our short day trip to Częstochowa in Februrary around the western side of the steelworks, on the branch leading towards the EHAZET plant, which receives hot slag in wagons for further processing. We didn't spot any trains, but at least we spotted 6De-2637 during shunting duties around the plant in the background. The main part of the steelworks is to the right of the image.
The EHAZET branchline is to be closed soon due to the fact that the slag processing plant is planning to move to a new location near the rolling mill, to the east of the whole industrial complex.
I talked about the 6De engines broadly in one of my previous posts, so if you're curious, have a read here!

A BRC crew sets off a grain train in 100th Street Yard in Chicago's Slag Valley neighborhood, named for the former Wisconsin Steel slag dumps in the neighborhood, with a trio of Watco SD60Ms that came down from WSOR the night before. It is not uncommon for BRC trains to use WSOR power on runs to South Chicago.

I love my city, and I like its industry, which inspired me to create this CG-Art in 3ds max and v-ray
With the end of steam working at Baoutou steelworks imminent, here is a reminder of how it looked when tipping the liquid slag. The light on the drifting steam was worth waiting for and lasted for just a few seconds.

This is a tighter shot than my previous panoramic shot of the same service.

The Mam Tor end of Edale Valley. It's almost like an alien landscape, especially in this light. In daylight the little mounds in the foreground look like they are probably manmade. I wonder if they are the "slag heaps", or "Spoil Heaps" from quarrying?
A Standard Slag GE 65-Tonner stands in front of a processing facility in Wierton, West Virginia. There is a small “20046” marking on the upper right corner of the unit. This leads me to believe that this unit is now Middletown & Hummelstown, which is identified as former Standard Slag 46.

The Ema Slag Heap in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
On the right bank of the Ostravice River, this slag-heap (an artificial hill created by piling up waste material from coal mines) reaches a height of 315 metres above sea level. It enjoys its own unique subtropical climate because the waste material is still burning deep beneath the surface – white smoke still billows from the cracks in the ground. Snow never settles here, and flowers grow all year round. From the top of Ostrava’s very own volcano you can enjoy some wonderful panoramic views of the city. Families can be seen climbing the heap on weekends.

The diesel-shunter was new to Clugston Slag on 26//02/1957 and continued to work at Scunthorpe until October 1983 when it was sold to J Potts of Grimsby. It is believed to have been scrapped in January 1990.
