After missing the April event due to the solar eclipse, and getting skunked the night before, the G4 (big!) geomagnetic storm (10/10/24) produced some lovely aurora borealis displays for northern Colorado, and apparently for places as far south as Arizona and Florida. This view is looking north from rural Boulder County, with some significant light pollution from a cement plant behind the cottonwood tree, and extensive clouds on the horizon. The first quarter moon was just setting, providing some illumination for the foreground. Hope the sun keeps up the storms (without disrupting communications and power supply too severely).

The last sunset of 2019 was really beautiful, with spectacular red clouds covering most of the western sky.
Just a few hours later the same part of the sky would be filled with the New Year's fireworks but it's nature with this awesome sunset that wins the end-of-2019 show for me.

They are amazing and rare.
You can only see them in cold parts of the world and only in winter or cold time and only at sunrise or sunset.
What a coincidence! Right now, as I'm writing this description I looked out the window and saw these clouds again.
And took a few pictures.
But this photo was taken last month, on December 19, 2024.
Some more nacreous clouds or mother of pearl clouds.
They got their name from abalones because they look like the inside of those beautiful shells - mother of pearl or nacre.
Mother of pearl or nacreous clouds are spectacular luminous clouds with rainbow colours.
Their colours are more intense than in rainbow, probably because they glow, illuminating the dark sky like big rainbow lamps.
They are very rare, usually seen only in cold parts of the world and only in winter and only around the sunset or sunrise time.
Very rare and beautiful clouds which are rainbow colors and luminous.
They are usually seen only in cold parts of the Earth and only in winter (or close to it) and only around sunset or sunrise.
So they are much more rare than Northern Lights.

I've recently taken a new, similar one but haven't processed it yet.
A lucky gamble to pop up Carn Brea last night paid off, we (me and Ian) were rewarded with a great colourful display from the clouds being hit with the last rays of the sun. Shame the tide was high and the wind was strong from the west, it would have been amazing on the coast.

Morning Walk November 21st, 2017. Light ice touches the sides of the lake while the sky bursts into colour on this November morning.
Fireworks from the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh a few years ago. For the entire week every night about 15 minutes before the fair closes, there is a wonderful firework display. I live just a few minutes from the State Fairgrounds, so it's easy for me to get out multiple evenings and photograph fireworks.

It has been a while since I had a chance to properly shoot the Perseid meteor shower. This year was lucky enough to have clear skies and a waxing crescent Moon, which makes shooting so much easier. I forgot how fun it was.
